LoS and smoke

Post by JudgeDredd »

Any reason why these units are being spotted?

As far as I am concerned, they are still well within a thick cover of smoke.

The only thing I can think of is that they are rushing...therefore making noise...but they are being spotted and shot at.

One question about that - are they actually taking fire? Sometimes enemy units will get targeting lines on your briefly as they see you for a split second through smoke or concealment, but not long enough to actually fire. The targeting lines wil remain but no actual fire will come in until they have a clear shot. I have seen instances like that where I can see that enemy squads are trying to target me but I am not actually taking fire. Moving does make you easier to spot, but a good amount of smoke usually negates that.

From the top view, it certainly looks like they should be well obscured. Even if they can be seen, the enemy fire should be suffering a severe penalty to accuracy, effectively firing at sound and shadows. It's -1 to accuracy per "hit" the LOS ray makes on smoke from firer to target.

If you could post a screenshot from the enemy unit's perspective it would actually be more useful as far as clearly seeing the smoke cover from their perspective.

Well, they were taking fire. It may not have been very effective, because they did not take any casualties. If the Russians are firing into the smoke knowing "something" is there, then I have no problem with it...It's just the targeting lines threw me...it seemed the unit was spotted - but as I said, they weren't taking any casualties.

As for the enemies view, I did not get a screen shot...however, I went behind where the enemy tracer was coming from and my units could not be seen.

Question's ...

1. The unit in the smoke can't see out right? (yeah, doh!, just thought I'd ask) [;)]

2. Whats a good ballpark figure of the radius of a CBE at full burn?

Reason why I'm asking ... If any of you have been following my AAR (ATR), I'm trying to assult a T-34. Well, my unit was 26m away and then it dawned on me ... the old rule for assault for PCOWS was 30m ... I read the manul for Pck ... it's now 25m [&:].

Anyway, I'm going to turn the clock back and redo the turn and have my squaddie perform :

1. REACTION PHASE - Toss a CBE right on top of the T-34.
2. ORDERS PHASE - Defend move to within 25m and close combat.

I'm hoping that the squad will defend move a few meters (that's all I need) and assault the tank in one move ... ie the orders phase.

Thanks in Advance!! Watch the turn over in the AAR thread ... Wish we can have a movie replay for a phase.

If it said 30m it was a missprint, because I think it really always was 25m. (Sadly many a good pixelman could of died because of that.)[:)]

Smoke grenade range is 30m.

Smoke grenades are suppose to provide sketchy smoke. Not a full cloud like an artillery barrage.
