Nothing much happened in December. In January the Union finally took Mobile and destroyed the small garrison there. Burnside tried to attack Fayetteville Arkansas again and was repulsed again. The end is near.

In March Beauregard attacked Chattanooga again while Polk attacked Thomas to the south trying to pin down some of his potential reinforcements. As you can see the forces committed to the battle were very even, but Confederate forces finally fell back to Knoxville. Polk's attack to the south suffered heavy casualties, especially to Forrest's cavalry, but if the attacked had worked I might have destroyed Thomas' army entirely.

Later in March, Grant attacked Manassas again, but Lee reinforced by Longstreet was able hold him off again. The Union suffered about 50% more casualties before falling back. Here is the combat detail again where you can see how leaders, terrain and unit experience effect the battle.

Well done, first off game is sold as soon as it comes out, however it realy bothers me that at the start you said the south cant win, only hold on,i understand this concept, however i sure as hell hope that there is a way to play the whole war as the south, and be able to set the victory conditions to tottal victory or like 80% map owned etc,i mean what a drag starting the war knowing you cannot achieve total final victory.or at least have a chance to try[:-]

The South can win. In our AAR (Joel and mine) If I had lost the battle in Columbia, the CSA would have won a decisive victory. It was that close...

I'll add that if I can't reduce Joel's PP's below zero before June 65, he wins a marginal victory.

First of all it was Bill's post, and yes the CSA has an uphill battle in this game. Do you want realism or something to fit you needs. Gary and Joel have reproduced a game that fits reality, and yes the CSA will lose most of the time. Joel took me to edge on our game, and I may still loose, but the fat lady hasn't sung yet...lol...

see this post,i read it to mean that in playing the full campaing, the csa cannot win the war ,only stave off defeat till a certain date,is that correct.

Here is my attempt at an AAR. Since Nelsm is playing as the Union, which is how I like to play, I thought I'd give the Confederates a shot. I usually play the Union on challenging which is the third level and that gives me a good game, but for this game I choose normal level AI since I'm not as familiar with the CSA. I started with the 1861 scenario which starts just before the first battle of Manassas.

(The CSA doesn't have a chance to win the war outright), all you can do is try to keep the Union off balance and make sure the Unions political points are below 1000 when the November 1864 election rolls around.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

BTW, I've played Jon and Joel in 6 or 7 PBEM games and only won once, so that should give you so idea of my skill level (not so good).

I live for realizim even if its one csa army versus 20 union armies no problem, but if your a good eneough commander to destroy the enemie you should win the war thats the point of all my posts,i think you missunderstood what i was trying to get across.

If you are good enough to attack into the North and/or take Washington, you will win the war outright. But the reality of the situation is that this would take an excellent Confederate player against an incompetent Union player. With equal competency, the south will not have the forces to sustain any kind of long term invasion of the North. The best you can really hope for against a competent Union player is to keep their political points low, force Lincoln to lose the election, and then force the Union to effectively make peace with the Confederacy. That is (and would have been) a Confederate vicotry.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Thanks joel, the csa never in reality had much of a chance, ive studied the ACW and the Napolionic wars for over thirty years,i mean one state in the union had more production than al the csa states combined, and then there is the population diff, however no matter how slim its good to know that your game alows the csa player the abilty to gain total victory, that is all i was worried and wondering about,i think i may have written my first post nore clearly ,im just not real great at putting my thoughts to paper, but thanks for clearing this up for me ,and i cant wait to play this.
