The 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers (WS Win)

Post by KG Erwin »

Preface: The team's history will be restarted using 1.71. 40-man real rosters, no early entry. Some fictionals will be included, but these players will be weeded out as time goes by.

I AM going to incorporate finances into this association. Let us assume that the players WERE successful in establishing a union, so there will be far-reaching changes in MLB's financial structure. So, not only will be the color-line be broken, but players will no longer be treated as indentured servants to the owners. The right to declare free agency now exists.

My reasons for starting with 1947 are well-known. However, I will be assuming the roles of both Branch Rickey and Leo Durocher, so my roster management philosophy will be different. The object is to bring a World Series championship to Brooklyn prior to 1955, and to make the Dodgers the best team in New York, which will be a daunting task.

Introduction: the Dodgers come off yet another heartbreak in 1946. We tied the Cardinals for the NL title, but lost a playoff series 2 games to none. St. Louis went on to defeat the Red Sox in a seven-game World Series.

The negotiations begin. Our highest-paid player is 21-yr-old SP Ralph Branca, who signed a 3-yr deal @ $140,337. We offered a 2-yr extension, but he turned it down. Other key players signed 5-yr contracts, so we are in pretty good shape. Our treasury holds $625,000.

The richest contract in the majors belongs to Warren Spahn of the Braves. He has a 3-yr deal @ $177,067.

Several teams have million-dollar payrolls, including the Dodgers. Needless to say, the owners and the fans will be expecting their money's worth.

In the pre-season power ratings, the top five (showing team payroll) are:

1. St. Louis Cardinals ($1,277,706)
2. New York Giants ($1,314,843)
3. New York Yankees ($1,183,647)
4. Boston Red Sox ($1,159,130)
5. Brooklyn Dodgers ($1,251,645)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 14. Minor-league note: we signed 27-yr-old RP Dan Bankhead to a 2-yr deal @ $13,057. He was assigned to AA. 1B Kevin Alvarez was released.
