Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I have a general question on Japanese Pilot training and pools.
Does it make sense to create small reserve pools within front-line units, or will these extras be taken out by a bug I have read about a couple times on the forum (having to do with 10K pilot limit)?
What I mean is: You can manipulate air units to put, say, 33 pilots into a 27-plane Daitai, thereby freeing up more units to train, and having a "ready reserve" at the front so that units can sustain some combat yet remain at full-strength. Being aggressive about this, you can put many more pilots in training, and effectively build a large on-map pilot reserve.
Doing this systematically, you will effectively increase the flow of trained pilots.
Not sure I'm going to do this, as I think it's a bit gamey, and would take tons of time to divide, move, disband fragments, etc. But is this a tactic others have used?

it works but don´t forget that the units you disband into others are not immediately available again to be filled up with new pilots to train.
RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I put the aircrafts in an AK and then unload them:
- the aircrafts ready go away in another base to start the pilot training (I fill up the squadron)
- the aircrafts damaged will be add to the front-line squadron (I disband it)
I use this method not to create a "ready reserve" but only fill in for the losses with expert pilots.

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I do this whenever I can, exactly as Saso describes, especially for carrier groups. I have had groups with as much as 50% excess pilots. What I mean is: You can manipulate air units to put, say, 33 pilots into a 27-plane Daitai, thereby freeing up more units to train, and having a "ready reserve" at the front so that units can sustain some combat yet remain at full-strength. Gets you working on training up new ones that much faster.[;)]

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I got some really bad news for all you guys building up a big reserve of pilots
Come 44 at some stage the pilot bug will swallow em.
So, you might as well use em while you got em!
After 44 both sides will be flying low experienced pilots -the japs especially so.
You have been warned..................
(AE will fix this -thank heavens and matrix)

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
It pulls the excess pilots out of units???

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
Definately yes
I had a zeke unit -48 planes -220 plus pilots -experience average in the 70's!
Took em all -left me with 16 pilots, after re fill -exp 48 (2 other similar zeke units also gutted)
Bug took nearly 500 crack navy pilots in one day -and 500 again the next.
I reckon average experince in the fleet went from mid 70's to low 40's in 2 days
Happened to 3 "super groups" I had built -and the one that hurt - a George group of 64 pilots, exp 80 plus if I remember correctly -down to exp level 30 after the "cull'
The bug don't care -it takes all excess pilots -I think if they are not flying that day - they go.
So, saving them is pointless, pointless, pointless.
If I could play again that game -I would have fought an awful lot harder than I did in 43.

Just wondering, is this only for stock games or does your experience extend to CHS and other variants too?
RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
Aye, I second this... Can we get any official read on this? It sounds like it makes PBEM games into 1944 and 1945 almost unplayable --- which would, IMO, make it a pretty serious bug.

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I've heard that, and would like to know as well. Hate to see all those pilots traned for the big battle to run away!
If that is the case, I'll have an awful lot of Kamis in early '44.......

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
I thought they found that bug and killed it. PzB in his game didn't have any issues with it.

This bug has not been killed.
use your pilots in early 43 jap players, come 44, at some time they will all desert you[:'(]

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
Just had this happen to me in my PBEM, fortunately on a much smaller scale. Had a carrier group with 16 Jills and 40 pilots, all 80ish exp, next turn the 24 extras had gone[:@]
Luckily my losses have been so high I have not been able to build up a pilot excess[:'(]

RE: Building a Japanese Pilot Reserve
The bug was fixed in a patch - not sure which but any game started within the last 6 months should be safe.
I also had an 'encounter' with it....
