Demo for this too?

Post by marcusm »

I read somewhere that a demo was planned for Kharkov.
Was this correct? I am glad if that is the case. It also
means that Matrixgames has finally given up their stubborn resistance against demos :).
Even though I always suggested using some kind of trial system if demos was so bad.

What is the ETA in that case?

Yes, we'd like to do one, but no ETA at this time.

We do not have a stubborn anti-demo policy, by the way. We're just not pro-demo. This may seem like semantics, but it's not. Demos require time and resources and a demo for a good game if done incorrectly can hurt sales more than it helps. We try to choose our games for demos with all those factors in mind and only when the developer also agrees that they want to do a demo.

Still hope you continue investigating trial systems as an option then. In those
cases most of the job would be done by the trial system. There must be some without
too intrusive copy protection. What about the system used by Spiderweb?

A demo for this game should be easy to do. You just have to select the right mission to pack with the demo.

BTW, i waiting for the demo...if you cant tell[:D]

Hm, I haven't looked at that one. What sets it apart from the others?

Ok. I tried the Winter Storm demo and I am getting hooked.

Can I just ask about buying both. Does Kharkov update the old engine as well?
This is something these module based wargames should think more about doing.

Also. The big infantry changes everyone talks about, are they huge compared to the 1.13 demo?

What happens is that as long as you own both and install Winterstorm first, then when you install Kharkov you also get updated versions of all the Winterstorm content that work fine from within Kharkov. You can then play the Winterstorm scenarios and campaigns and use the Winterstorm maps with all the new Kharkov features. There's some more info on that here:

tm.asp?m=1770902
Also. The big infantry changes everyone talks about, are they huge compared to the 1.13 demo?

If I recall correctly, the 1.13 demo added casualty steps for infantry in Winterstorm, but it did not include the overhauled LOS and Terrain rules, the addition of Smoke, foxholes and entrenchments, the updated close assault rules or the additional infantry units and support units like on-map mortars and infantry guns.

Nice, ok it seems I will buy this after all :).

It's good that you go for backward compatibility. This was the biggest mistake with the CM engine imho.
As an ASL player I like the module approach.

That is our plan going forwards too, so the next release will incorporate the previous Winterstorm + Kharkov content and allow you to play with it in the latest engine.

I think just about every game I've ever bought was bought on the strength of the demo..
"No demo, no buy" is my policy most of the time.
I mean, imagine going to browse around a bookshop with a view to buying a book but not being allowed to leaf through any of them, they'd soon go out of business..;)
(PS -I was given Kharkov free and it so happens I like it, but I wish there was a "trees off" toggle so we could better see what's going on)

Well, we plan to do a demo for Kharkov in the future, it just may not be the near future, depending.
