Are there some typos on the current contest page Or do I just not get it? No flame, just confused & looking for guidance.

Quote from contest web page "Select who you feel is one of the commanders in the Pacific Theater during World War Two from 1932-1945. Write a brief biography and report on his commander. Please include a bibliography in your essay. The essay may be no less than 700 words, but no more than 1500 words, in English."

Are we to write about persons we feel were commanders or were the BEST commanders and are we to write about this commander or his commander?

I think the idea here is that you are to write an article on a commander that excelled at his task in the Pacific in WW2.

MacArthur, Nimitz, Yamamoto, Merrill, Halsey or lesser known ones, General Sir Thomas Blamey (Anzac), General Stillwell, Genral Slim (UK)Colonel Red Edson, Kawaguchi, Kuribayashi, Colonel Shoup on Tarawa, etc, etc.

It is not the commander or the leader that is so important but how you present him.

You are pleading his case as one of the great leaders in the Pacific during the war, not neccessarily the scope of his leadership but the quality of it.

Perhaps this will clarify it for you Bonzo...WB

Thanks WB. I just found the text a little confusing. From my experience with my own "hunt & peck" typing, I know all about dropped letters & words Image If I had known the author of the page I would direct my query there. Given that this page is for a contest, clarity is of the essence Image

The phrase "...you feel is one of the commanders..." should probably read something like "...you feel is one of the great commanders..." or underappreciated, loony, sexiest Image

At work, I get my coworkers to edit my work. (No, No. BILL the customer, not kill) Tankhead checks my web site. (Thank you very much) Just offering my (totally unrequested) editorial obsevations. I know everyone is doing that high speed, scramble thing.

LOL!
First you guys are not making money with SPWAW by not being able to sell it. Now you guys are simply giving money away.
I think its getting obvious that the Matrix staff is composed of history majors, computer science majors, public relations gurus, maybe even some law students, but not one single business course was taken by the lot of you.
Well, as apprehensive as I would be if I held stock, it seems to be working so far, so keep up the good work.

Does kind of sound like a death wish, doesn't it, Fox? Image

Well we're still having fun...I think Image

Of course we are. When we make a little change, we'll be having more fun Image

Point well taken, Bonzo. And no offense taken, especially since I did not write it Image

Seriously, that kind of thing is a big help. It was a little confusing. I think the author meant to say "this" instead of "his."

But it should be fixed shortly if not already. Thanks. Good observation...WB

I think the key to the amiable atmosphere of the forum is due to the fact that like seeks like. Flamers go where the flames are.

The kindler, gentler folks seem a like spirit. Here on this forum we try to leave the fighting in the games, not on the forum.

I have found the participants here to be kind, good people, with the best interest of the game at heart. No pretensions or arrogance that I have seen at all.

Troublemakers don't hang around too long because they don't have a cheering section.

And I am very glad it is like that. We disagree of course, but even that can be done with a good attitude and a constructive goal.

I enjoy this forum and conversing with all of you ....The rest of the Matrix staff feels the same way.

And a little humor now and then does not hurt a thing, JL! I agree with you Image

I must say, the essay contest makes for some tough choices. I wish you guys had chosen "the most overrated commander of the SPWaW period". I could give you the hands-down winner of that, BUT, I guess that's for another topic in a different forum subject. Hmmm...BUT, for those guys looking for a best commander subject, here's a freebie...check out Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring. A VERY worthy candidate for best commander of that period award. Just give me credit for the inspiration. Glenn. Hint: you couldn't find a better guy to transplant to the US Army forty years later as far as grasping the AirLand concept as it was intended to work-----------------

He would be a most likely candidate but we are focusing on the Pacific. Now you really will have to do your homework Image

There were a few "overrated" commanders there too, of course Image

OK, Wild Bill, I'm not entering the contest, but the best and worst in the Pacific (IMHO)both belong to the US--Best:Adm.Chester Nimitz. Worst:Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Note that the US Navy had its finest moments during this war, so a US Navy commander HAD to be the best choice. My choice of MacArthur as worst may seem heretical to some, but the facts weigh strongly in his disfavor. IF I have to defend one of these points, then I will consider the challenge. But, $50 and a CD of SPWaW ? Come on. How about $100 and a free copy of the next for-pay Matrix project on CD?

Hey, Bro! Lighten up. We ain't made no money yet. Image

That $50 is coming out of our grocery money. That is pretty good for a gaming company that has not had any income as yet!

I wish we had $100 to give away. I just wish I had $100 period! Image

So "Dugout Doug" (that is what the GIs called him in WW2) does not appeal to you.

I wonder why Image

He and Nimitz had some real knock-down dragouts about allocation of resources in the Pacific.

Nimitz wanted to bypass the Philippines. Doug had made a promise. Thank God for the liberation of the valiant Filipino people, of course, but the battle for the Philippines was very long and costly. Perhaps Formosa would have been the same (Nimitz' choice).

Write one anyway, just for the good mental exercise and the research learning you'll be doing. Good medicine anytime. I would certainly enter if I could! Image
