Another frozen game with 2.27

Post by zaphod »

I have aleague using stock plays and playbooks. I get to season 5, week 6 and the game freezes when saving stats for a particular player. I mention this as I decided that something may have gotten corrupt, so I imported the league again from earlier in the season. Then I simmed out week 4 and week 5. No problems. Then week 6, and it freezes at the same spot, while saving stats for the same player.

I am running this on Win XP Sp2. I can send the league in if that would help. Just let me know what files you want and where to send it; if needed.

Thanks,

John

Hi.

If you zip up and attach the league to a PM, I'll take a look.

What team is it?
Quick sim or 3D?
What build was the league created with?
Have you used any 3rd party tools on the database?
What do you mean by "imported the league"?
Did you reset the league prior to using it with 2.2.60?

thanks
David

It is Palatine vs Union Mills, week 6.  Lounger is the player where it freezes.
Quick sim
Played and created in 2.2.70
No third party tools used.
Copied league files into directory.

I will PM you the file.  This file is from week 4, a couple of weeks before the error.  The freezing happens at the same point.

Thanks,

John

Thanks

I ran a quick check on my laptop and it seemed to process that game okay.

I took your two files, dropped them into the game folder, and simed out week 5, then quick simmed just that specific game of week 6. Everything seemed to work okay. I'll try it on a couple of others computers later tonight. There's also no player in the DB called Lounger so I assume you mean Lounder?

I'll let you know what I find.

thanks

Yes, Lounder is correct.

I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but I looked at the filesize of the mdb before playing, and it was at around 21 MB.  The mdb after freezing was at 121 mb.  Huge difference!  Again, I don't know if that means anything or not.

Yeah.. that's a fairly substantial jump in size to say the least. My first reaction to that is to think that the game isn't "freezing" but rather writing the stats for that player to a new record many, many times. It's a good clue and something I'll a good place for me to start looking. Although, I am not sure why it would happen for just that one player.

thanks

If I do what you did, and sim only that game in week 6, I also get by and it does not freeze.  This was happening when i was quick-simming the entire week.  I'll try again siming the entire week and see if it freezes at the same place.

OK, an update. After getting by that one game, when I went to sim out the week for the remaining games it "froze" at the Washington-Lake Lure Game on player Essaff. The game finished, it was just doing the post-processing.

Hi.

I've spent some time with this database and have been able to reproduce the problem fairly consistently, although each time on a different player.

The failure seems to be coming from the JET database engine (Microsoft Access). This is the database engine I use to create and process the games databases. At some point the database has become corupted and so the JET database engine no longer processes my commands. Instead it returns the following error;

Reserved Error (-1601); there is no message for this error.

If they can reserve the error, why can't they give a description??. But I digress...

I'm trying to find a way to correct this in my code, but as this is a JET bug, it seems unlikely I will be able to do anything other than take precautions. I'm also going to add a 'repair database' method to the utilities because that's the microsoft suggested solution and if you don't have MS ACCESS you have no way to call this function. So I'm going to add it to the utilities.

That said, I think I was able to repair your database and I have sent it back to you in a PM.

thanks
David

Thank you for the quick response.  Having that repair function available will be a great addition.  It doesn't take much to get a corrupt database.  I'm sure it will help others down the road.

Microsoft strikes again.

Is there any chance that the utility could be uploaded to, say, FBMax prior to the next release/patch?
