How is the campaign game?

Post by rroberson »

Is it a series of randomly generated scenarios...is it dynamic (that is damage and losses carry over)...is it fun? I am a campaign kind of guy...like the immersion of a well done dynamic campaign ...is this one?

There are both completely non-random historical campaigns and random semi-historical campaigns. In both cases, losses carry over, experience can be gained or lost, medals and abilties awarded and for the longer campaigns, equipment upgraded. The longest random campaign is over 100 scenarios, the shortest is about a dozen.

Well, I think it is. I've actuallyonly played through the boot camp campaign, and I thought it did a good job of pulling me along.

But I have spent some (a little) time loking at the campagin generator and it looks like it could be pretty nice tool for creating "historical" within a context. And it does come with a few Historical campaigns as well.

The one thing I really missed from CM was the lack of leading my guys through a campaign...the connected missions had that somewhat (I never picked up the follow ups so I dont know how much that changed).

I used RobO's Quick campaign generator to do that. it was a lot of work though. This is much easier.

Tell me more about these randomised campaigns. This could be the game I have been looking for since CM didn't show with the campaign addon.

Astro,

Well, the game comes with a "Random Campaign Generator" (as well as a "Random Battle Generator") along with a number of already designed random campaigns or varying lengths (from 12 scenarios to well over 100). You can choose one of the existing ones (easy) or create your own (more challenging, but not hard). When you choose a random campaign, you can set the number of battles within the minimum and maximum range and also adjust the replacement levels from Historical (lowest) to Maximum (highest). When playing you can also choose the difficulty of each battle before you play it.

Each campaign is different every time you generate it, but they remain as close to historical as they can be (as far as forces, the flow of battles, replacements, etc.) within the random framework.

There's a "HQ Helper" that allows you to request additional help if you are stuck on a mission, but otherwise you play through from start to finish, with your core force of platoons continuing with you from battle to battle. Losses carry over as does experience, you can choose where to apply the replacement points you receive, medals and abilties are assigned to units based on their performance and in the long run, your goal is to win each scenario so that you can survive to complete the campaign and win.

If you lose a battle in a randomly generated campaign, do you have to play it again?

The RBG and RCG are what sold this game for me, excellent additions.

Yes, though you get to apply any replacements (and also change the difficulty if you want and use the HQ Helper if you need to).

Campaign game is pretty cool... you can, with a bit of work, really tailor your OOB to what you want... and make it as difficult as you want.

I have not started a campaign yet as I still think I stink too much to tackle them yet, but are the scenarios that I have been trying independent of the campaigns or have they been lifted and tweaked from the campaign and turned into the scenarios?

Most of the historical scenarios are from the campaigns, but some are separate set battles. If you want to try some individual battles while being sure that you are not "spoiling" any of the campaign scenarios, then try the random battle generator. [8D]

Eric, following up on JP's question, I went through the scenario list to find some scenarios that didn't have a #x in the description, and assumed these were standalone battles, such as Return Road to Kharkov for example. Is this a way to identify standalone set battles? I didn't want to spoil the suprise of jumping into one of the campaign battles ahead of time either.

Thanks

Off the top of my head all but Kolomak, Return Road and Tuchebahn are in some campaign. Zveroboy is a Russian standalone but is included in the Kursk German campaign since it can be evenly played from both sides.

Hey, Thanks for info! I think I'll just jump into the Mcensk campaign and see where that takes me.

Thanks,
Rick
