pt2 files flagged as virus infected

Hi Vic,

I know that this has been mentioned a few times before, but the automatic scanning of file attachments by Norton Antivirus for Yahoo! email keeps flagging the pt2 files as infected. In previous versions of Yahoo mail, I was still able to upload and download the files, since the files sort of slipped through, and the message was that the scanning was not available for this file. However, recently, my service has "upgraded" itself, and now I can neither upload, or download them. I fear that should this continue, it will cause some problems within the PBEM community, as Yahoo mail is a popular form of free email.

Is there anyway that you can contact Yahoo, and/or Norton, so that the files don't get improperly flagged as infected? Can Matrix lend any assistance here?

I know when AVG made a false positive on a WitP patch file, somebody contacted GriSoft and they promptly fixed it.

In your case, it sounds like you might need to get a less antsy e-mail account. Norton Antivirus is about the worst there is for false positives.

When I first started playing AT back in Nov, I think. I had this issue. I contacted Yahoo about it and they totally blew me off. I was actually going to switch mail handlers to hotmail, but I tried it and it had the same problem, I didn't attempt to contact them.

I was able to fall back to the classic version of Yahoo and could then send PBEM files. but now I'm stuff with the classic version.

Maybe someone with more of a voice could get a better response than me.

The .pt2 files are actually zip files. To be honest i think it is strange if an email provider thinks they are virusses.
 
But it is something i will take into account for the next game.

Vic, AFAIK every tool that is popular with the hacker/cracker crowd is likely to be flagged as "bad". Did you use a compression algorithm that might look suspect to their scanners?

If nothing else helps, try zipping or rar-ing the files before emailing them. It's just a minor nuisance.

This was a problem for me from the very start. And I was unable to get Yahoo mail folks to pay any attention. I event posted about it on their post a problem board with no success.

I don't know what it is that is triggering it, I had thought it might have something to do with encryption, but I dont know.

What might be it is the fact that the .pt2 files are not only zipped, but they are password protected zips. that might somehow trigger the virus scanners that are denied access to view whats in the file.

Same thing happaned to me with Yahoo. I was using classic and the files were getting through fine because Yahoo had thier virus scanners turned off. Recently they turned them on and all .pt2 files got flagged as false positives.
I can still recieve files through Yahoo...as virus scanning on the new Yahoo is turned off incoming but is turned on for outgoing so I can't send.
 
I switched to Gmail for outgoing and no problems....and I'm pretty much going to switch to them for incoming as soon as my latest game is done.
 
BTW, whoever said Norton is terrible for false positives is 100 percent correct. Back in the day Norton AV was THE virus scanner of choice....past few years thier Security Suite products have been an absolute steaming pile!
