Minimum Obstacle Clearance

Post by Mraah »

Erik / Stridor / Mobius / Kiosworks,

What's the minimum distance between objects (obstacles) that units can pass between?

I'd experiment with this check myself but if you can be so kind and save me the trouble I'd appreciate it.

See screen shot below. For discussion purposes, I staggered the colored squares to show a distance of 5 meter's between the two objects. I know walls can be traversed by tanks and infantry but I want to make the path finding routine go around them ... for now.

Thanks!!

Rob

If you color code the underlying AI/LOS map with impassable terrain then tanks/infantry can't pass through walls!

In general it will be a question of fit, so if it looks like it should work it probably will, but like everything in life YMMV and you will need to check it out.

Gotcha ... Well, I'll have to build an Obstacle Course for testing ...[:D].

Just another phase of boot camp, huh? ...

"You eye-ballin' me Private Pyle! ... Git your fat a## over that wall ! ... of course, the ending won't be so dramatic !

yes, you must color code the underlying 2d terrain map. that is what pathfinding uses to determine a path.

also, i recommend leaving a decent size gap or you will get the pathfinder getting things stuck. tight and narrow paths will drive the pathfinding algorithim crazy.

There's a "bounding box" around each unit which determines more or less where its edges are. I've seen units able to get through some pretty tight spots as long as there's a bit more room than the unit size on either side. I don't think you need a huge gap, but the larger it is the easier it will be for the pathfinding.

Erik and all,

Ok ... thanks for replies. When I build my obstacle course I'll post my findings here so at least others can have a starting minimum distance to work with.
