Battlelines Clash near Akyab

Post by spence »

For 4 days a large fleet of freighters anchored off the small port of Akyab on the Burma coast unloading supplies to the Allied forces there. The IJN finally took exception to their impudence and dispatched battleships Hyuga and Yamashiro to teach the Royal Navy a lesson in humility. Or, perhaps they only meant to bombard the troublesome airfield there. In any case things didn't turn out exactly as planned. The convoy departed on the night of the 24th with empty holds but the covering force stayed on. In a clash of battlelines the Japanese were driven off.

More Battleships

Post by spence »

On the 25th, IJN Battleships Mutsu and Nagato steamed into Portland Roads engaging and sinking several PT Boats, the destroyer USS Porter and a freighter. A Japanese destroyer was also sunk. If a bombardment had been scheduled it was cancelled following the surface engagements. The IJN force had been attacked for the most part unsucessfully from the air on the previous two days. A number of Japanese fighters covering the force had been downed in A2A combat

The Japanese have been striving mightily to halt the slow Allied buildup in Northern Australia. Fierce air battles have been a daily feature for the last week. Japanese G4Ms have sunk a number of small freighters and some small combatants near Thursday Island. Despite the constant air attacks the Allies managed to land considerable supplies and the buildup there continues.

Meanwhile in the far North and also on the 25th, a Japanese Carrier TF raided Adak in the Aleutians. Several freighters and small combatants were damaged.

After a brief hiatus we will resume our program in progress...Not exactly sure where in the plot we are, but we'll figure it out as we go along.
