A Good Mod Tool.

Post by z1812 »

Hi All,

When I started modding skins for PCK I was using DDS convertor 2 to handle the dds files. Unfortuntely it did not preserve alpha channels. ( I really have no idea what alpha channels are and what they do).

I looked for a more friendly program and settled upon Paint.Net. It opens the dds files directly, preserving the alpha channels, and saves directly as a dds. No more conversions and it is a very functional art program.

I find Paint Net reasonably intuitive and best of all free! The link is below.

I have used Paint .Net and agree that it is a good one. I just don't have the knowledge of graphic arts to do much with any program.

During PC development I installed .net 2.0 and 3.0 just to see if it would mess with the 1.1 that the games use. Never had a problem.

z1812,

With DDS converter 2, under the OPTIONS tab, make sure you check the "save alpha(if any)" checkbox.

I use Paint.net for all my modding. I am not an artist, all the mods I do are geometric, so it works just fine for me.

I have a question though. When I made my cross hatched gridded terrain mod this weekend, it was the first time I had used .dds files. There are a lot of save options for them in Paint.net. Does anybody know what the best options for saving files for PCK are?

I'll have to try paint.net ... several folks here are using it ...

Do you mean the DXT# ? I don't know what PcK uses.

A link to Wikipedia S3 Texture Compression might explain them for now.
