Message meanings

Post by Deathtreader »

Hi all,

What do the following messages from the unit log mean??

1/ "Absorbing independents" -- none of my nearby units have been disbanded or in combat of any kind.

2/ "Bypassed" or "Bypassing".

Thanks!!

Rob.
So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)

Rob,

Re "Absorbing Indepenedents". This does NOT refer to disbanding units. The message occurs when a part of a force that was undertaking an independent task rejoins the main body. An independent task is raised for instance when your force is widely separated and they need to move separately to the objective - eg. group 1 is 10km south of the objetive while group 2 is 5km north. It would not be sensible to have group 2 march all the way down south, past the objective to move in formation with group 1 back to the objective. So instead they will be given a separate independent Move task. When they arrive at the objective or get close enough to each other, the independent will be absorbed back into the main body and they will act as one force.

It often happens when reinforcements arrive. Say you have a Bde operating 15kms north of the entry area for the reinforcement. You don't want to hold up the Bde waiting for the reinforcement to arrive and move in formation. So the reinforcement is given an independent Move task and when it arrives it gets absorbed back in.

Re Bypassing. If a friendly force is moving along a route and encounters a strong enemy force that it jnust can't sim ply brush aside, it usually has three options - attack, bunker down or bypass. When it bypasses, it recalculates its route trying to avoid the known enemy concentrations, so you will often see the force swinging around to the left or right trying to give the enemy a wide berth.

Thanks!! Makes things clearer............... as a suggestion, perhaps the manual for BFTB and future games could include (brief) explanations of the messages or at least some of the less obvious ones. [:)]
