A couple of questions

Post by JFalk68 »

Hello everyone,

I am relatively new here and just started to play the game a week ago and I have a few questions.

1) First question, how can I tell which units of mine will use foot or motorized movemt or switch back and forth. For example in the Sarantaporon scenario as the Alllies all of my units are motorized in some very unfriendly terrain to motorized units. I have noticed that my 1 infantry battlion is also motorized but it moves much faster then the armor in the same corridors especially when assaulting the hill. I am assuming that the infantry battalion is proceding on foot.

2) Do the artillary units also use both foot/motorized transport. It seems like some of them do. I guess I am asking which units will revert to foot movement if they need to.

3) For the arty units that bombard, do you leave them as separate commands and just bomb the heck out of locations? I want to make the best use of them. For the other arty units, the ones that don't bombard do you usually loan them over to your defense or assault battalions for extra impact?

Thanks
John

Hi JFalk68, and welcome to the group.

The equipment of the motorized/mechanized units do not separate from the "troops" in the current version. So, if motorized units are going through rough or hilly ground, there will be a movement penalty, regardless.

Regarding the control of gun units, I would say it really depends on the size of the scenario you are playing. If there are only a few bombard units, I may choose to control those directly. If there are many units, then it is just to much for me to control. In that case, you have the choice of letting them fire at whatever, or assigning them to "direct fire" only. If you click on the arty units parent HQ's objective, you can select the direct fire mode. This will tell those arty units to fire only in support of that given attack. I would guess that is what most players do for attacking in large scenarios.
The non bombarding gun units (including machine gun unit's) get more attention from me as to where they are deployed. The AI does OK in placing them, but I like to get the maximum bang out of them. I use the area sighting tool to choose a good spot and send them there.
BTW, you may find the keyboard shortcuts easier/quicker to utilize for sighting (and other things). Use the K key to turn on the area sighting tool, do your map recon, then hit the escape key to close the tool. You may also find it useful to right click on your chosen location witch brings up the terrain dialog pointing to the spot, exit the tool and select your unit, and send it there with the appropriate orders.

When I said "direct fire", I meant "direct support".
