Sticking a finger in the eye of the Tokugawa Shogunate

Post by spence »

My worthy opponent, SASO, has been regaling you all with the glories of Japanese arms for some time now in his AAR. Since he's mixed in some of his plans, I have kept out of the AAR. But it has come to my attention that in the true fashion of militarist dictatorships everywhere some inconvenient facts have been "de-emphasized".

Naturally, this being a RISING SUN Scenario, the overall situation for the Allies is hopeless. But the forces of goodness and light, mom, apple pie and the girl next door, and all things bright and beautiful have had a number of good goes at the Imperial Enemy.

January 17th, 1942

A force of Allied destroyers tries to attack the invasion fleet off Balikpapan but is intercepted by the covering force.

The first 10 days of February saw the Japanese roll forward in the eastern DEI. Makassar, Kendari, Maumere, Raba, Noemfoor, Biak all fell to the Japanese. Singapore, cut off and bombed incessantly for nearly a month, fell. Meanwhile the US-Philippino Army in Manila continues to defy the Japanese and inflict significant losses on the 6 reinforced divisions (48th, 4th, 2nd, 38th, 16th, and 21st) besieging it.

The IJN continues to take significant losses. 13 destroyers have been confirmed sunk. Fleet Air Arm Swordfish sank two off Kendari while other aircraft roughed up the invasion force.

The Japanese juggernaut rolls on: well actually it's been mostly small detachments of paratroops scarfing up undefended minor bases. But a major landing was taken at Palembang and that drew a fairly serious response. At first things went in favor of the Sons of Heaven although more than a few got their feet wet in the landing.

The KB is South of Java now. For the past couple of days my aviators (dare I say airheads) have been committing suicide by flying. A hundred Sallys have been pulverizing Batavia for 5 days. 50 Nells have kept Soerabaya all smashed up.

A big landing at Malang so far has gained relatively little ground. Another assault force is offshore probably headed for Tjilatjap guarded by at least two divisions of the KB.

But still I manage the occasional sting.

A mid-ocean intercept:

Night Time Surface Combat at 18,45

Japanese Ships
AK Yahiko Maru, Shell hits 18, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
AP Yuzan Maru
AK Bujun Maru, heavy damage

Allied Ships

DD Electra
DD Encounter
DD Express
DD Isis

A beat up sub scores on another maru:

Sub attack at 22,51

Japanese Ships
AP Seizan Maru, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS S-39

Japanese ground losses:
61 casualties reported

The Batavia assault force (probably) takes a few knocks NW of Java

Day Air attack on TF at 21,57

Allied aircraft
Beaufort V-IX x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Matue Maru
AP Haisho Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AK Taichu Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
44 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Beaufort V-IX launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Beaufort V-IX launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Day Air attack on TF at 21,57

T.IVa x 3
Blenheim I x 4
Blenheim IV x 3
Beaufort V-IX x 5

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
DD Hayabusa
CL Sendai, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Suwa Maru, Bomb hits 1
AP Ayato Maru
AP Hokutatsu Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Unaccountably the enemy seems bogged down Bali. Two days of assaults have not overcome the small force of defenders. The first assault at Malang fails to break into the defenses.

Ground combat at Malang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 25096 troops, 162 guns, 14 vehicles, Assault Value = 336

Defending force 6461 troops, 49 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 154

Japanese max assault: 278 - adjusted assault: 97

Allied max defense: 137 - adjusted defense: 268

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese ground losses:
339 casualties reported
Guns lost 17
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
277 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
