One other thing and I'll shut up for awhile. I was fortunate enough to meet Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, Ray Goff, Erskine Russell, John Merritt (Tennessee State- coached Joe Gilliam, Ed Too Tall Jones, etc) and was in the same room with Bear Bryant once and almost got close enough to meet him. Of course, being a UT grad, I had contact with Johnny Majors, Doug Dickey, Bill Battle, etc. When I was around those guys it was special- almost like cold chills would run up my spine. I don't think I'd feel that way being around the coaches in the conference now. Maybe it's just because I'm older now, but those old school coaches were SPECIAL. I respected them and they were class acts. Not perfect men, but good men.

Looks like I started somethin'
Old Coach I saw Namath play in high school when I was 10 and he was at Beaver Falls HS. I remember it well. Classic Ohio "River Rat Football". He threw for 401 yds(ALOT in those days),ran all over the place and lost to my(future) HS somethin like 44-42. Big story in the Ohio valley when Joe didn't choose Penn State or Pitt. I was stoked for a 10 year old. I was already a fanatical Alabama fan. Joe became half a Great QB when his knee blew out in the South Carolina game. I also saw Ditka play at Aliquppa HS but i was like real young and don't remember much. But I do remember seeing him play at Pitt against Army and Duke and Penn State.
Last time I saw Bama was at the Rose Bowl a few Years ago when they got hosed by UCLA, and once in the LA colosseum in '77 when they beat the Toejams in a great Victory. Only game I saw in Tuscaloosa was an Ol Miss game in the early 70's. I really partyed at that one. Some day I'll get back there.
Rhino you are obviously a youngin and you have not been around long enough to have hatred tempered by respect for your rivals in the SEC. You probably root for the Other team when one SEC team  plays outside the SEC,Si?.
Are you a Fredo?

Good night Canada.

I do think a little bit of the bitterness in the Bama/UT rivalry has eased over the past two years.

If Namath had the advantage of present day knee surgery technologies, there is no telling what his pro career could have been. He could barely run in his last few years in the NFL. I am also a big Kenny the Snake Stabler fan. When I saw Namath & Bama play Miss. State I was in the 8th grade. I don't remember much about the game except that Namath was awesome, we ate at a steak house somewhere outside Starkville after the game and I fell asleep on the way home. One other thing- Namath does a great sideline interview when he's "had a few".

Rich Brooks- are you kidding me. He makes me yawn. I'm not a big Phil Fulmer fan either. That's a long story as to why. I had a class with him at UT. He attended every class but never said a word. Bobby Petrino- don't get me started on him.

Old coach you are right on about the Old School. Its the money now that has screwed it up. Coaches are just mercenaries anymore.  A large percentage of years The SEC  has been the best conference in the country top to bottom. It is now highly competitive and has been since Bryant passed and Bama stopped dominating the conf.
I don't like Fulmer. I love Johnny Majors. What he did at Pitt was phenomenal. I thought UT blew it with him at the time. And Johnny Vaught. Can't forget to mention him. I was like peeing my diapers when Neyland had his great '51 team so i've only read of him. Neyland was great but the Old school innovator was a guy who started at Massilon,OH high school  (started the tradition that every father of a boy born in Massilon recieves a football!), and I heard tell invented most of modern football: Paul Brown.[&o]
Like playbooks........
