The Braves spotted the D-backs a 2-0 lead, then cruised to a 9-3 win in Phoenix. The news was not all good, though. Zane Smith started on the mound, but left in the first inning with elbow stiffness. He will miss at least one start and may be placed on the disabled list. Recently promoted Juan Eichelberger came on to relieve Smith, allowed 2 runs in the 2nd inning, then left the game in the 3rd inning with a quad injury. He will be placed on the 15-day DL. Jim Acker relieved Eichelberger, hurled 4 2/3 scoreless innings, and raised his record to 3-2.

At the plate, Lonnie Smith was 3-5 with a triple and 2 RBI. Albert Hall had a double and 3 RBI. Gerald Perry, Ron Gant, Ken Oberkfell, and Andres Thomas chipped in with two hits apiece. Randy Choate (2-2) took the loss in relief for Arizona.
