Blender editing - noob to 3D

Post by rickier65 »

After reading more of Moto's posts I decided to try blender again - this time actually starting with a beginners tutorial -

Slowly working my way through it.

I decided to take another stab at Stridors tutorial - where I stopped after getting a height map created of the Colo. River Bridge.

found a guide on heightmps in Blender and finllly got the Colo. River map into blender - unfortunately not scaled to anything -- but it was nice to see something show up in Blender. ( I was kinda jumping ahead of myself ).

Question for Motomouse - I tried importing a building from PCK terrain directory, but wasn't able to get anything to import into Blender - have you done that and is it possible? Any hints at how to do it -

In the meantime, I'm slowly going through the learning stage for Blender - even if I'm not able to get Blender working for me, it isn't wasted time since I'm totally new to 3D stuff - at least I'm learning a little about modeling - and at least some of what I learn will help me understand Milkshape3D if I end up going that way (which since that's what Stridor's tutorials use seems, likely).

There is a LOT of documentation and tutorials on Blender!

Rick,

I had the same problem with Blender where importing a DirectX file didn't work.
My solution was to convert the .X into a 3DS format. Then, importing the 3DS worked fine. When it did import it it placed it at the center which was inside that default cube you see. I just moved the cube out of the way or deleted it totally so I could see the imported object.

There are dozen's of 3D format converter's out there. I use 3D converter, a shareware program.

Here's a website, GRIME, that has more 3D converting tools links ... http://www.grime.net/gistools/index.htm

Hope that helps. I prefer MS3D myself.

Thanks Rob - I'll look at those - I suspect I may end up with MS3D manily to make use of the tutorials Stridors doing - unless someone steps up with similar tutorials with Blender. But I think Stridors been a little busy so I won't jump into MS for sure for a while. I'll wait at least until he finihses his Colo River map tutorial and maybe his animation tutorial.

In the mean time, I'm learning a litlte bit about 3D stuff using Blender - I tried looking at MS3D public domain tutorials and quite a few of the lniks seem to be dead. Blender has a world of doucmentation (unfortunately - it's needed becasue it seems to be pretty complex).

Thanks again - and hope youre still working on Singling map! I'm curious to see how the multi-room large building turns out.

I'm taking some time to go through Mcensk campaign as well - enjoying that.

I'v been toying with seeing about doing a N. Africa scenario just for fun - (I'm reading Rick Atkinson's "An Army At Dawn". I ike gaming battles I read about. But not sure Im up to doing that - if I wait - the next game in series might make it easier.

Thanks
Rick
