too bad the big bad yamato didn't do much to impact the war.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

She wins a ton of points for style. She was a beautiful ship, much cleaner lines than the Iowas. It was just such an audacious project, 18in guns? And they wanted to build a ship with 20in guns
RE: JFB - IJN Yamato
beach her and use her as a giant pill box, yep, uhuh.

I don't mean to be a **** but even Musashi wasn't effective. Yes , gorgeous ships with awesome firepower.
but
Too bad they both couldn't go toe to toe with the good guy's ships to see what could have been.[:)]

RE: JFB - IJN Yamato
What is sad is that the U.S. can't even currently manufacture a 16 inch shell. Yamato was a wonder of the world IMO.
RE: JFB - IJN Yamato
Not really, the little wooden CVE's and those pilots who hated(ok maybe too honest there) the Empire of Japan made that a moot point.ORIGINAL: thegreatwent

build a ship with 500 inch guns at that time for that matter.

They were a collosal waste of resources for Japan, no doubt. I am talking purely looks and coolness.
The Italians built great looking ships, like the Vittorio Veneto. They actually sucked, but they LOOKED cool.

Littorio class BBs was in fact very good ships. Only problem was small action radius, but this problem was not so big in Mediteranian sea.
And yes,very beautiful ships.

I guess I wasn't clear. While the ships Yamato and her sister were irrelevant to the war I consider their manufacture and technical sophistication to be a marvel.
At Samar the jeep carriers and DE's certainly accomplished more the Yamato, so no argument there, yet you must respect the accomplishment that these vessels were.

I liked the last minute best.

Fortunately this is not one of those sensitive subjects or it would have been much, much worse [:D]. Someone might have mentioned, in the same post, the words "scuttle" and "Bis ... Whoops I almost did it [:-]
RE: JFB - IJN Yamato
The Littorios were a respectable design. I can't say their flaws were particularly glaring.
I must dissent regarding Yamato--I think she had an awkward look to her.

I agree with Tiornu. The IJN superstructures look clumsy to me. Otherwise she had beautiful lines, but she could have used a much cleaner look to the superstructure IMO. The Iowas have a more balanced look to me...

Look this fellow up on youtube, he has almost 800 videos archived there with military themes.

One I wached recently was the British stringbags attacking the Italian fleet at Toranto.

Going off tonnage cost the IJN could have built 60 destroyers in the place of those two useless monsters.....

Only sixty?
It is said that one turret was already heavier than a single destroyer... Well sixty is a lot already though.
Man, yes, that's such a beautiful (and fortunate) waste they had there.
