Scene Editor

Post by Mad Russian »

Stridor,

I went into the scene editor and moved a single building and then saved it. When I go to the scenario editor though it doesn't show up on the maps list. Why is that?

I opened up the Scene Editor pdf and tried to follow along there. It was very easy until I couldn't get the map to display for me.

Got any ideas about what I might be doing wrong?

Good Hunting.

MR,

You need to recreate a whole new subdirectory if you want to do a brand new map. You can mod exisiting maps in scenedit, but if you want to create a new one, you will need to copy the map directory of the level you want to recreate and then rename the scene name appropriately.

For example Lets assume you wanted to create a new map based on Kharkov_L5a.

Then what you would need to do is clone the Kharkov_L5a directory off the media directory as your new map name (eg "MR_map"). The go into this new directory and rename the Kharkov_L5Ascene.xml to MR_mapscene.xml (note: do this exactly the name must be of this form or it won't work). Now go into scenedit and load up MR_mapscene.xml and make your changes. Save and you should be good. Remember if you move stuff around you will need to update the map.bmp as well. You can do this within scenedit by going into the Map.bmp menu select open (open the map.bmp for your level). Next select common from the palette and pick the right color (see the color guide which is in the pdf extra docs). The by holding down the ALT key you can "paint" that color onto the map. Use this to paint where you put new houses and erase old ones, etc. Remember to save you map.bmp from the menu as well.

I hope that helps.

Remember that scenedit is an internal development tool. It is not pretty but it does work, you just have to get used to it.

I got the map I wanted. I moved a building on it in Scene Edit. I saved it with a new name. I went back into Scenario Editor and when I tried to use it that saved map doesn't show up on the list of available maps.

What am I missing here?

To be honest with you, the scenario editing tools I've seen you using are not that hard outside actual map making. They are probably, as you keep telling us, not that hard either if I wanted to buy them and learn to use them. I've chosen not to do that because the next release is supposed to have a full map editor. I'l just use that one.

Thanks for your patience with my issues.

Good Hunting.

MR, when you say "I got the map I wanted" do you mean you recreated a new directory with a copy of the new map? Or did you load up a map in scenedit and then save it as a new name?

I loaded one of the maps available in the game. The same one I believe was in the small tutorial in the pdf.

MR,

Please read my #2 post again. I think that will solve your problems.

In essence a *new* map needs a whole new directory structure. If all you wanted to do is to mod an existing map then you can do what you did and then save the map with the same name as the original and your changes will be reflected. If you want to do a whole new map then you need to follow post #2. Pay specific attention to the naming standards as well.

Example:

You new Map directory is called "MR_New_Map" The map scene must be named "MR_New_Mapscene.xml". If you name it something else it won't work.

I tried the procedure in Stridor's number 2 post and it worked fine for me.

My editing of a map included copying several houses and many trees in an effort to provide more cover for the grunts.  Putting the red color for the map.bmp is a very tedious procedure.  I'm wondering if I can edit the bmp in another program with a wider brush?

The map I edited, L4 Winter, is a "read only file" so I had to remove that attribute in order to save my edited map.  That was the only hitch I found in Stridor's post which referred to a different map so it wasn't an error.

+++++++
I've been getting "new" maps by generating random campaigns in the RCG and then opening the map's XML file and giving the scenario a new name in lieu of the numbered reference.  Also changed the entry so the battle shows up in the scenario editor.  Now, it is possible to load this into the scenario editor and create a new battle with a new map.  In two campaigns, I was able to obtain a couple of dozen new battles following this procedure.

Redleg -

If I recall, you have threee brush sizes you can use within the scene edit program. I actually found myself using the bigger ones just a little. The red color means impassable - so you must be putting in lots of buildings.

But yes - when I first did some work on a map - I didn't know about the ingame painter so I was using GIMP. BUT - It is much much much harder to allign things using the outside editor. ie you paint a house then go back into game and see that you actually painted the reas next to house - so either move house, or go back and repaint. I found it much easier to use the in-game painter, though maybe for getting the "rough-in" work done the external might work ok.

But make sure you check the addemdum for the correct RGB values to use, rather than just going by eye.

Ah so, I see.  Yes I put in a lot of trees and copied either 5 or 6 buildings.... mainly to see if I could do it ok.

My red areas around the houses look a little sloppy but they do work.  Now I know all is working, I'll go back and clean things up a bit.

My goal is to break up the field of vision in significant parts of the map so as to put more SMGs into action and reduce the number of opportunities for the AT guns to dominate so much of the battlefield.  If I can interfere with the LOS, perhaps there will be more close assaults going on.

Thanks, Rick.  Redleg out.
