artillery

Post by kirk1227 »

I started a July Coming Fury game against the computer as the union. I am using quick combat with advanced rules. I noticed at the end of the 1st turn that in all the battles there were only 2 artillery battalions(or whatever an artillery icon represents) and they were both confed. I know that the union had artillery battalions at the beg. of the war., yet they are nowhere to be found at the beg. of this game. I didnt expect to see a lot of artillery, but I did expect to see a little. My guess is that I am missing some abstract meaning behind the art icons in the game. Could someone out there explain what I am missing? Thanks kirk

Just to be a little more clear. In the first turn there was a battle in the Fred. Prov. in Va.(a 1st Mannasses if you will). In the quick battle I viewed, there was on rebel artillery icon on the field and no union art. icon. Is the game saying there was no union art. in the union army at this stage of the war in Va. or that the confed. had more?? Agian, my guess is that there is something else going on here that I am not getting. On a side note,I notice I am a mere matrix recruit, how the heck does one rise up the ranks in this here outfit?:) Im guessing asking annoying questions all the time isnt one way:). kirk

Since FOF is brigade-level, a bit of abstraction is necessary. Essentially, the South was quicker to mass its artillery together, though both sides ultimately grouped several batteries together into brigades/battalions. In the July 1861 scenario the CSA starts off with those two artillery "brigades" but has fewer infantry brigades equipped with brigade artillery, whereas the North has none of the former and more of the latter. And the two CSA artillery units are both "Legendary Units" that fought at First Bull Run, whereas the Union's artillery LU's weren't there, which is why there's the disparity in the first turn -- a disparity that the North can easily afford to fix the very next turn by buying some brigade artillery for units that already have artillery, thus creating artillery brigades.

That said, I think that one or two more Union infantry brigades should start off with brigade artillery, based on the Bull Run OOB's I was just looking at. (My impression is that the two sides at Bull Run had roughly the same number of guns, but I can't find numbers, just the numbers of batteries.)

Ahh, Ok, thanks Gill. So its not so much that the union or confed. dont have cannon on the field(which they do), they just arent represented in the game yet because they havnt been organized into large enough organizations of "brigade level"., which are built and organzied by your infrastructue such as foundries etc. Thanks again kirk
