How far into the game are you? If you're a few months in, and have been building research-related buildings, you should be getting to choose upgrades at the end of the turn. If you're not seeing that, perhaps you toggled off the option for research upgrades when you began your game?

And yes, in detailed combat you can turn a unit without moving it, just by right-clicking on a hex in the direction where you want it to face.

Also is there any way to recover fatigue in detailed combat?

Oh, I misunderstood you. You're asking about purchasing brigade attributes. You need to click on one of the two blank blue squares that you'll see when a unit is selected. Look at p. 158 of the manual for a screenshot.

Don't make the unit move or shoot. Especially during the night turns.

Thank you, I have one more question.

How would I train a particular brigade to become sharpshooters or something like that?

Sharpshooters is a brigade attribute, so you purchase it. (There's a list of all attributes in the manual (in the appendix, I think). As for special abilities (e.g., Hardy, Shooters, Bulldogs, Blasted), those are gained randomly through combat experience, or are taught by a general if the general "knows" that ability and if the unit's quality is high enough.

Tip: Buy Sharpshooters for units with guns that have the best sharpshooting rating. If you give a brigade armed with muskets this attribute that's a waste. (Values are listed in the appendix, in the section on guns.)
