Princess Irene Brigade

Post by el cid again »

It appears it was planned to send a unit of regular Dutch Army troops to NEI - that this met internal resistence (enlisted men did not like the idea and the Constitution said only volunteers could be sent to NEI) - and that the plan was overtaken by events when Japan invaded. Apparently an element did eventually get incorporated in a special forces unit. The unit appears not to have wholly formed up - and would need time to do that - or we could make it appear below strength. Investigating OB and possible dates/arrival points for use in some scenarios. This was brought to my attention by our resident Dutch member in discussions about possible policy for a game in which I will play OSO - but which has not yet begun.

Later in the war, another unit of that name (but with a British Army TOE) fought in Northwestern Europe.

Yes... I know they were all Dutch; what I said was they had a British TOE, since the British trained and equipped them.

Was more a reinforced battalion than a brigade. Only 1400 men.

Our Dutch player more or less says the same thing: he said it was not sent to NEI in the event - so it no doubt stayed in UK - and fought ETO IRL. He also says it was planned to have three battalions of 1200 men - and it started at 150 men (who DID go to Far East as an element of Korps Insulinde) - and that is compatable with it never did get to full size. I guess they were all volunteers - and not too many could be found I suppose. Do you have any more data on TO&E?

I am thinking this unit belongs in EOS family but not CVO/BBO family scenarios.

Nope. Took a look around for it but couldn't find much. I know there was at least a British TOE motorized battalion, as well as a reconnaissance squadron with armoured cars and an artillery battery.

Wow, thanks again. Very useful and interesting site. And thanks for your offer to translate, but I can read and understand Dutch well enough.
