I started out on bass, upright and electric.

I play guitar, a little harmonica (no Magic Dick tho, LOL), trumpet, ukelele and am gettting pretty good with the tin whistle.

Haven't played them in years but I'm sure I could still play trombone, baritone and tuba/sousaphone.

Bass

What is it with bassists and wargames?

My theory is that guitarists are too self absorbed to do anything but play guitar:D

Drummers lack the attention span (everyone knows drummers aren't REAL musicians) ;)

Horn players are all jazzbos (too cool to have fun)

No offense intended, just having a little fun:) :) :)

Another bass player

Post by KG Erwin »

Yes, I played in a semi-pro band for many years. Play guitar also, but bass is my primary instrument. Of course, the games go right along with this, since bass is THE coolest instrument and bass players are always the most intellectual and historically-minded members of the band. ;)

Here's another one of us

Bob Albertson ("alby") is a bass player, too. Hmm, get us all together and we could do a bass-quintet version of Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom". :D

Sound's like fun.

As long as I play the "bass" bass part.

I subscibe to the K.I.S.S ("keep it simple stupid", not Gene Simmons) style ala Duck Dunn on the Stax stuff they did in Memphis in the '60s.

Ok with all the bass players here who was your favorite or who got you playing?

I was a bass violin player until I heard John Entwhistle.

Hold on there all you bass players. I've been playing guitar for about 27 years. I'm 37 now, and still write music with my best friend who is a singer and also likes war games.

Played in various bands thru the eighties, now just do it for a hobbie. ( like I don't have enough hobbies already, lol)

Used to play stuff like Dio, Savatage, Maiden, Priest, Queensryche, Megadeath, Pantera and so forth. ( Just because it was the eighties does'nt mean everyone liked all those wimpy hairbands, he he) We also wrote a bunch a tunes, and still do.

I just have a passion for WW2 history, especially in the Pacific, who happens to be a heavy guitarist. ;-)

War Buddy out.

Hey!
I resent those horn player comments!
I play the sax-alto, some baritone. Not often anymore, just honk around now...

TG there's no drummers so far though:D

Never could get a decent tone from any sax. Always the duck thing.

Okay, Easy8, it's a good thing your message icon was winking cause I play drums. I've heard all the drummer putdowns but I know in reality that all those dummer jokes are the sincerist form of flattery. Drummers are a dime a dozen (like most musicians) but a good drummer is very hard to find. Any guitar, keyboard, or horn player will do, but if you have a solid drummer and bass player with a good looking chick up front singing, you've got a band.

I started playing back when the Beatles came out and I played professionally through the 70's. My nearest brush with fame was when I played with John Fogerty (pre Credence) and sat in with Elvin Bishop when he came to town every now and then. Got to meet Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce when they were in Cream but never got to play with them. I guess Ginger Baker was too jealous. (Hah!) Was around a lot of other musicians but sex, drugs and rock and roll make for a foggy memory. Played it all... rock, jazz and even country. Had lots of fun but it just got too much for me and I decided to get a real job. Music can be a very tough way to earn a living and it really is a lot of work. But every time I hear a live band, I can hardly contain myself and I want to play. I'm 52 now but I can still whip any young punk on the drums. Any music any time. Not bragging, just confident.

Yes Dave we do like to pick on drummers but it's because we luv ya;)

What's the difference between a certificate of deposit and a guitar player?

The CD eventually matures!

thats because the bass and drums are the base of the band, infact the drummer is the most powerfull on stage

Mojo,

You're right on. I'll be the first to admit it... drummers are just a little more quirky than other people. You have to be a little bit cocky to play the drums well. We drummers don't brag, we just know when we're good. Hey, why do you think all the babes run off with the drummer? (Wink, wink, nod, nod)

But seriously, musicians are a great bunch of people and I'd sit in with anyone regardless of their ability. If you've taken the time to learn an instument then you're just as good as the next guy. It's just a matter of confidence and practice, practice, practice.
