Small War, Big Blunders Shark7 vs Saso, Guadalcanal (No Saso Pls)

Post by Shark7 »

I'm sure Saso has done a fine job of eloquently describing my numerous blunders, and yet I still fight on. At this point, I'm going to ask Saso not to read further, as I will be giving away my future plans to an extent.

I'll give a quick background for those who have not yet read Saso's AAR on our game. The truth is, he's beaten me at every turn. I credit the Allied production superiority (and B-17s) for keeping me in this game. He managed to cripple my carrier force in 1 turn, sink or knock out of action every BB I had (the 3 sunk never even fired a shot from their main batteries), and generally make my life miserable as a commander. I even managed to lose Lunga and the 1st Marine Division in the process. Overall a very bad time for me...to say the least.

So how does it stand now...

As you can see, I have managed to lose a large portion of my capital surface forces. Wasp sank with its entire air wing to a fuel explosion, Enterprise was nearly lost to the same cause in the same phase. I did manage to get her back to port, but she is laid up in port with over 70 system damage and isn't repairing in any type of timely fashion.

Saratoga eventually suffered 2 torpedo hits from a sneaky RO that managed to slip by my escort screen. Like Enterprise, she is laid up in port with over 70 system damage. That leaves me Hornet and 2 CVEs as the entire carrier fleet in the Coral Sea at the moment, and I'm so gunshy atm that I don't dare risk them into enemy air range.

I have managed to turn the tide in Papua/New Guinea, retaking both Rossel Island and using it for a very effective raid against his carrier force, and finally retaking Gili Gili, hoping it will give me an additional large airfield soon to get my 2E bombers in range.

I am certain that CVL Zuiho (I beleive it was) will succumb to its injuries. I counted no fewer than 6 1000 lb and 500 lb bomb hits as well as both Fuel Storage Explosion and a Magazine Explosion. Junyo also withdrew very quickly after suffering a single 1000 lb bomb hit. With my carrier wings and LBA flying out of Rossel Island, I finally managed to surprise him. I don't think he was expecting me to move my bombers there.

I have noticed that following one particularly bloody raid in which his Betty's chose to challenge me unescorted he seems to have limited them to the same range as his fighter escort. This actually played in my favor, as it opened the sea lanes for me to resupply Port Moresby. Had it not been for this one thing, the battle would be lost for me. Instead, that allowed me to retake both Rossel Island and now Gili Gili.

This is how the map looks as of 10-31-42. Basically it's finally back to where it started....well almost.

It seems Saso has become agressive again. Ndini is the target, he's got the equivalent of 3-4 divisions invading. However, thanks to my intel reports, I knew it was coming and built a fairly good defense. Plus I plan to reinforce by air.

I have been very impressed with my CD and PT boats, they have stung him badly this round. In all, he 1 DD sunk outright and 2 badly damaged by torpedos (multiple hits, I truly expect them to sink) for 6 PT boats. Best performance my PTs have put in so far.

CD return fire was just nasty this round. Glad it wasn't me on the recieving end.

Meanwhile, operational plan D continues...

What has become very apparant is that Saso means to take Ndini at all costs. There are now around 5 divisions worth of troops committed to the landing. I cannot reinforce enough to hold this base. What I am doing is likely sacrificing a Cruiser SAG in an attempt to at least make it costly for him. I have no doubt that he will win any surface battle, thus far he has proven much more the master of surface combat than I.

However, with all those troops committed to Ndini, that must mean he has little troops station in his own bases. Now is the time to grow agressive in New Guinea and the Solomons. I figure it is make or break time. I am continuing operational Plan D, which is to take Buna overland and then move up to Lae.

I am debating trying to pull off a daring amphibious landing at Buna, but such a move would likely prove suicidal for the task force assigned to it. I do have a few options now that I have a new Para Bn however. A quick raid of one of his lighly defended bases perhaps?

Operational Plan D:

4 Divisions to move up to take Buna, then on to Lae. These will be supported by the US I Corps and Aus I Corps, as well as 2 Australian AT Rgts, and the 46th Sea Beas. If recon shows that the small islands to the east of Gili Gili are ungarrisoned, 3 Base forces will be assigned to quickly retake those. Once Secured, the 52nd Aviation Rgt will move into Buna, immediately begin operations to enlarge the airfield there, and begin operating fighters and dive bombers to interdict Japanese shipping.

And Ndini falls with a wimper. A quick play of Brave Sir Robin may have saved a couple of the units from total annihilation, but otherwise, a total loss. The SAG performed even worse than expected, I traded 4 cruisers and 4 destroyers for a couple of his destroyers. Total loss for me, none of them survived.

Honestly, I'm thinking I'm in a no win situation now. I can still carry on operations on land, but I have proven completely inept at engaging him with Naval forces.

It's been a quiet few turns, not that having a little quiet time is a bad thing. It's given me a chance to rest my bomber crews for the next phase of the operation.

The most action we've seen the last few days are Saso's numerous attempts to rescue his troops that abondoned Gili Gili with a fleet of barges. I have actually welcomed this as it is great experience for my Fighters, Fighter-Bombers and surface units (you really can't ask for better targets, they're slow and can't shoot back effectively).

The 30th Australian Brigade continues its march to Dobudura. I am hoping he thinks I plan to take Buna itself, rather than the smaller base as a supply depot. Dobudura is undeveloped and undefended. An easy take and I can then move in engineers and get the airfield or port up and running in short order (I hope).

I have spotted a large number of bombers at Rabaul via recon flights which I suspect are his G4Ms awaiting my next amphibious operation to strike. He has not been attacking airfields with them lately, and they only venture out as far as their escorts can go.

In the meantime, I will secure the smaller islands around Gili Gili so that he cannot use those to base fighters and Dive/Torpedo bombers that are orphaned from his carrier forces. I have finally re-opened the supply lines to Gili Gili and Port Moresby, I do not intend to allow him to close them down again.

Not much to report today. It's hard to write an AAR and where is no action to have an after report on.

I continue strafing barges, and he is apparantly building up supplies, ships and troops at Ndini. No doubt planning to invade Luganville or Efate. I have a few surprises of my own in the works there though. I have not had a hostile air raid in several days now, can't imagine what he is saving his A/C for.

The movement of troops for Plan D continues. He is not even attempting to harrass my resupply efforts in New Guinnea. It's actually a little creepy, almost like I'm doing exactly what he wants me to do. Time will tell.

Shark7,

In my Scenario 5 game against my brother Mikimoto, I have found that Beufighters are awesome barge killers. Set them at Naval Attack at altitude 100 and they will kill a lot of barges. If you have the PP and pool reserves available and airgrade upgrades option is on, try converting some of the Australia command FB units to Beufighter

And another few days of 'Whack the Barge'.

Not much has changed, though I get the feeling things are about to heat up again. Something about me having nice rested 4E bomber crews. Plus Gili Gili will be a level 4 airfield very soon as well. I don't have to take Rabaul, just shut down its runway. Then I can actually move troops and men.

There are around 450 aircraft at Rabaul according to my recon flights. 150+ are fighters. Shutting down this airfield is going to be very bloody, especially since I lack long range fighters.

It is perhaps unwise to send the bombers on this daylight raid, but if you never gamble, you never hit the jack-pot. Sometimes you just gotta take the chance.

Well that was bloody. I'd say I broke even this round. The bomber raid had an effect, not exactly the desired effect though.

It got his attention, and he has dispersed the air from Rabaul to numerous surrounding bases. I noticed that Lae is now sporting A/C, so it is the next trarget. I also moved out a couple of bomber units and move in some more fighters. He's going to run into my psuedo uber cap in his retaliation strike.

The 2 DD SAG performed extremely well. I credit having a good agressive commander for that.

Also a group of strafing Beaufighters managed to put a hurt on CS Nisshin at Shortlands. Got a electricals critical. I forsee some port time for that ship soon.

Anyway, at least there is somethign to report.
