SuperNova - The Sun is Ablaze!! vs. John 3rd (A)

Post by ny59giants »

This will be a John 3rd free zone!!

This will be my first attempt as the Japanese player. [X(] There is nothing like jumping into the deep end of the pool with only one brief swimming lesson. [:D] That lesson has been John's Economic Minister for for the last few months of game time against Canoerebel (Dan). [8|] Hopefully, much more experienced Japanese Economic Ministers will give me plenty of insight and feedback before I run the Japanese economy into the ground.

First, a special thanks to Nemo for the hard work and countless hours in producing this fine looking mod. [&o][&o] He has added more "bells and whistles" than even the biggest JFB could hope for (I'm just a WitP Fan Boy). However, he has added multiple traps when it comes to making choices when running the Japanese economy (details to follow).

Second, is a thanks to John for his willingness to play me for the third time. The first was a brief game using Big B's that went into 1/42 and then a few attempts at RHS (only went to 1/42, too) from 11/07 to 1/08. Hopefully, we can get farther this time. This will be a slower paced game as John has his epic game against Dan to keep him busy.

Third, is a big round of applause for Floyd and Damian for their utility, WitPTracker. I don't think I would even consider trying this game without it. If you have followed John's AAR, you can see their handiwork throughout as I have worked to get John's economy back from the abyss. I played Damian briefly this past spring as a fill in for his his PBEM game as I wanted to see if I could save India from a 5/42 invasion with Big B's mod. I was able to do so, but I lost too many CVs in the South Pacific (as the Alied player that seems to be where I do so [8|]) and with the breaking news of Admiral's Edition, the game came to a halt. However, we have agreed to pick up a game with Admiral's Edition or sooner with this mod (I'll play the Allies here and try not to lose my CVs so easily [:D]).

Currently, I am awaiting John to successfully install this mod. We had a brief phone call yesterday to achieve that. But no such luck. Hopefully, that will be achieved today after a few more emails and if needed, another phone call.

Here are the House Rules we will be using. They are from Nemo and Alfred along with a few of my own at the bottom.

House Rules – Empire’s Ablaze

Victory Determination
1. A points determined auto victory is disregarded.
2. A direct Allied victory by force of arms is achieved after (a) recapturing most of its lost colonies, (b) capturing a significant part of Japan's overseas empire, and (c) capturing Tokyo.
3. A direct Japanese victory by force of arms is achieved after (a) liberating most of the Allied colonies, (b) retaining its overseas empire intact, and (c) capturing Salt Lake City.
4. Either player may surrender unconditionally if he is of the view that he cannot prevent his opponent from achieving a direct victory by force of arms.
5. A draw ensues if the scenario ends before victory is determined.

Empires Ablaze Allied Oceanic Shipping Channel
6. The x co-ordinate (1,yy) and the y co-ordinate (xx,148) constitute an Allied oceanic shipping channel ("the AOSC").
7. The AOSC is reserved solely for the use of Allied units. Japanese land, sea or air units may never enter the AOSC.
8. Allied units and bases in the AOSC are immune from Japanese attack, capture or recon. Allied units in the AOSC may not attack or recon Japanese units or bases which are situated outside the AOSC.
9. The three Allied Bases which are within the AOSC are:

Capetown
South Atlantic Entry
Port Stanley

Operational Use Prohibited Due to lack of Available Counter-measures
10. Aircraft will not deploy mines.
11. The Japanese G9M aircraft is not to be assigned the mission port attack.
12. The Japanese Ki-264 Behemoth bomber is not to fly below 20,000 feet.
13. Kamikaze air units are to fly below 25,000 feet.
14. Allied and Japanese dive bombers assigned the mission naval attack must fly below 25,000 feet.

Empires Ablaze Game Balance for Allied Survival in 1942
15. Japanese units may never attack, enter, or capture Aden.
16. Japanese units may never attack, enter or capture the two Soviet bases Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk, nor any Soviet units located at these two bases.
17. Japanese units are not permitted to cut the Trans-Siberian Railway line betwen Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk.

Acceptable Play
18. With the exception of the Allied bases listed in #9, #15 and #16 above, all other bases may be attacked, entered or captured by either player.
19. Amphibious invasions are permitted only at dot beach/base hexes.
20. Sub/para drops only on dot beach/base hexes are allowed provided the entire LCU/air transport unit participates. Drops of only a few squads, or outside of dot beach/base hexes are not permitted.
21. Until fighting breaks out between the Soviet Union and Japan, the Western Allies may use Soviet airfields to refuel airplanes in transit but may not use Soviet ports to refuel or resupply naval assets.
22. Political Points ("PPs") are to be paid by LCU/LBA to operate away from their assigned geographic territorial command.
23. PPs are to be paid by units before they commence their movement to a base operated by their new command. Units which are in transit to a base of their new command may, whilst temporarily located at a base operated by a different command, respond to enemy activity without the need to expend PPs but will expend new PPs if they do no proceed with their movement to a base of their assigned command.
24. Naval Task Force may replenish at any port sized 3 or greater.

Malacca Strait
25. Possession of Singapore (hex 22,51) prevents all enemy surface ships from transiting or remaining in the following hexes:

(22,50) Johore Bahru
(21,51)
(22,51) Singapore

Enemy submarines may transit or remain in the above hexes.

7th December 1941 turn only
26. Japanese sea invasions, which approach the aerial reconned invasion site from international waters and sail from nearby Japanese bases, are permitted.
27. The Allies cannot expend PPs.
28. The Allies may redeploy LCU/LBA within their existing territorial commands. Both sides will be allowed to have their LBA accept pilots and reinforcements
29. Allied ships "anchored" in ports smaller than size 3 may be formed into Task Forces. Allied warships (not TK/AP/AK) already in a TF are allowed to have their orders changed.
30. Allied naval Task Forces may be given new orders to sail provided such orders do not entail attacking a Japanese base or moving to a base owned by another Allied country.
Our House Rules (added to the basics provided by Nemo):
1st Turn
1). KB will attack Pearl. The Japanese are allowed one more port attack, but only with naval LBA. This is the only exception to rule #2.
2) The Americans can sortie from Manila three times the number of the last digit in the email sent with the Japanese first turn (and will reply directly using that email as proof). (Date: 5/22/2008 10:24:12 AM), they could sortie 6 subs (3 x 2). Thus, if the Japanese player chooses Manila vs Singapore to get those "nasty" subs, he may come up empty (up to 27 subs could run away).
3) Only those LCUs "prepped" for an objective can use the first turn bonus movement to invade, even if they are not already loaded on AP/AKs. They can set objectives and load other LCUs in their home port, but not move until turn 2. However, movement from own base to own base is allowed (ex - loading BFs in Formosa and setting Palua as home port and destination. Thus are moved during first movement phase there).
4) China has no restrictions. They are already at war.

Game Long
1) Russia - They are at war and active, but not shooting...yet. Through all of '42, a 14 day notice is needed; through '43, 7 days; and none beginning in '44 for either side.
2) Minefield Size – 5000 per base
3) No Restrictions – to size of ASW TF
4) Gameyness – avoid using game mechanics to exploit a loophole.
5) Play to have fun and learn. Issues to be resolved as things pop up.

Anything else or needs to be changed??

The first decision, among many, for the Japanese player is ship production. So many "toys," not enough naval ship building points. [:(] Which of carriers do you halt?? There are about 25 to be produces through this mod. [X(] There are 4 of those CVA (Yamato class with the armored flight deck and capacity of 96 planes). [X(] I'll halt one for now. [:D] Decisions....Decisions

The second area will be aircraft production and the associated right engines at the right time. Some of the early war engines are not used on the late war fighters.
Again, decisions....decisions.

BC Amagi and Tosa cost 370 points per turn. Between them and some subs OR some of the Designer Class CAAAs ( Nemo-san etc ) you could easily save the 800+ points. Personally I just stop the subs and the Amagi and Tosa and then see how things develop.

Do bear in mind though that while you DO have 1,700+ naval shipyards and 600 merchant shipyards the cost of running them PER DAY is well over 13,000 HI PER DAY. So, sure you can build all these ships IF you run the naval shipyards at full steam BUT can you afford to do that? Personally I stop most of the merchant ship production until my HI can ramp up.

Its all about what force you decide to build to implement the strategy you want. Want an LBA-based force? Sure, you can build that. If you want a CV-based force then you can do that. Want LOTS of ASW forces? Sure you can do that. Want massive armoured divisions? Sure you can do that.  BUT you can't do more than 1 or 2 of those at the same time and you certainly can't do all of them.

My advice to you is to figure out what kind of force you want at hand in mid-43 when the Allied counter-attack will start and then to plan your economy in order to achieve that. As time goes by continue this 18 months ahead planning cycle and I think things should work out fairly well no matter which of the various options ( or even a balanced force mix [X(] [X(] [X(] ) you choose.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

Yeah don't stop Nemo-san floating around the Pacific, giving us interesting Mods and insightful discussion [;)]

Damn right, unless you are greedy like me and want to conquer the Pacific ... and then the world ....."I have no territorial ambitions ..." hate quoting the guy, who made possible so many strategy games, but it's pertinent here...yes he did some really bad stuff too ...In the words of an old English comic "he was a very naughty boy..."

Look forward to seeing how this progresses, good luck.

Note: During my test run of my opening turn, only 23 Torpedoes were launched and nothing was reported as sunk. I will spend some time giving orders and making adjustments to my economy. The economic part will be posted as I know a few others are getting started on this mod (and others like 1EyedJack) and doing it agian. [:D]

Overall, a very fruitful first day and KB will probably launch one final attack at max torpedo range before heading home. The first days results were so good, I will not stay around for multiple days.

Air Losses: Allies - 355 Japan - 74

Damn, that's the best Turn 1 opening I think I've ever seen. 3 confirmed kills and most other BBs have taken 3 to 4 torpedo hits. Ouch!!! The US Pacific Fleet is truly completely out of action.

Good luck to you both on your game.

While I await John to do his second turn. I thought I would say a little about the economy.
Japan has 12,084 in HI. This last turn we used 14,528 and have a reserve down to 12,702. Thus, I need to trim about 2,500 in daily HI use.

To accomplish this, 400 out of 617 Merchant Shipbuilding was shut down (Nagasaki - 180; Okayama - 100; Tokyo - 80; and Hitachi - 40). This will get me 1,200 HI per day back. I have also used my new "toy" WitPTracker to figure what else to do. The Japanese Naval Ship Building program is very ambitious in this mod. Last turn it used up 5163 HI (1721 x 3 = 5163). Thus, Sasebo (100) was shut down to save another 300 HI. Ship Building took up almost 1/2 of my HI usage last turn, so until expansion and conquest start to kick in, they will be on a diet. [;)]

Ships halted - The 2 BattleCruiser, CV Kii, CV Kurama, CV Isama, CV Taiho, CLAA Woods-san, CLAA TankerAce-San, I-32, I-36, I-38. All merchant ships with a greater arrival time than 60 days were halted, except for 2 AR conversions.
Armament at Tokyo (150) was halted on production. Another 900 HI saved.

Air Production: With 10 different engines being built throughout this mod, I am shutting down the Toyoda, Kokusai, Nissan, and Aichi engine factories, including their repairs for the time being. The only Mitsubishi factory is at Hiroshima and with plenty in the pool and no need, it was shut down.

We will look at things after the next turn to see if I went too far, which I feel I may have, and then turn things back on slowly. Hopefully, other players of this mod will see my mistake and not make them in their own games.

Screenshots will following after the next turn. I need to learn how to post mutliple screenshots per post. Directions please. I'm using FxFoto as it is free, but if there is another free program that is more user freindly, let me know. Thanks!

This is maybe the best first turn for Japan I have seen. Best of all, you sank Boise! The game is all but over.

Well, except for the months and years of hard fighting ahead. But it's still a good start.

While I await John to do his second turn. I thought I would say a little about the economy.
Japan has 12,084 in HI. This last turn we used 14,528 and have a reserve down to 12,702. Thus, I need to trim about 2,500 in daily HI use.

I took a slightly different approach with this mod from you:-
1. I determined that the incoming troops for the next 90 days, would use about the amount of Man/Arm/Veh, that I have in store now. And initially I need about the same amount again to reinforce my existing troops.
Now maybe I'm overplaying here, but I shut down all but around 400 arm factories. So in 90 days, 36000 arm will be produced and I will save 400*6 = 2472 HI/ day. My stocks will be zero at that time(and combat hasn't started & don't know TOE), but I plan to micro-manage this for some time to come. (well until my other plans come to the fore)
2. I did the same with which ships I halted, but I did not turn off any naval or merchant yards, yet. I was going to look through the merchant yard roster, and determine if I could convert one of them to naval sometime, without too much hassle or maybe increase my ship build capacity. (I know HI is still a problem)
3. I agree with the most of the engine build for now, although I also halted repairs on many of these builds too. (I'll talk about that in another post....) to save supplies and I need to build up some more ship repair facilities, and plane factories, for the long run.

I really need to get a handle on these plane models though ... and I'll do that soon.

As for pasting together sshots, I don't have a good program to do it, as I use paint, to crop and combine...
but from AAR's Rogers Nelson II seems to make nice pics I think he uses this
tm.asp?m=992187&mpage=1&key=screen%2Ccapture&#992187
(I've never tried it)

The best I have ever achieved at Pearl is 2 BB's sunk, in all games, even V AI - your cup runneth over my friend, I'll quote you ... watch that "victory disease" [:D]

Did you look at the full TO&E for those "mixed" Bde?? They have a lot more vehicles added. So if your goal is (which I don't know) is to invade India and Australia, then the extra vehicles come in handy. I'm trying to figure out a balance. I hope to continue getting feedback from you and other players.

Hehehe, I am REALLY gratified to see the primacy of the economic choices this early on. It is really what I was looking for.
