Operation Weserûbung -now awaiting aproval

Post by Grymme »

Hi

I just tried my hands on some scenariodesigning. Since this is my first attempt please feel free to help me. Have just started playtesting it a little bit. Will correct some of the unit names and so forth as time goes, make info and so on.....

Overall i dont want much production other than supply. Maybe the odd rifle or two for the norwegians.

download and try. Feel free to improve.

Sincerely,

Tomas

Tomas -

There is a scenario bank at http://www.advancedtactics.org/scenariobank.php

It has an area for posting first drafts as well as finished sceanrios. It's a good way to spread the game

New version out. However there is a bug during AIs turn which goes into an eternity loop. f*ck. Dont know what i did because it wasnt there before.

If anyone could help me with the bug i would love it. Could have something to with the AI trying to change HQ

Another new version out. Fixed the bug. Doubled air & naval speed/reach. Its starting to look really good. It feels like it would be ready to start playtesting soon.

Here is a quick view of the Oslo operational area on turn 1. It is not a unit intensive scenario.

Looks like it should be interesting - I don't think I"ve ever played a battle in this theater.

Thanks

Thanks. Its starting to feel like a genuine scenario now. Of course it still needs some tweaking.

I added a victory condition. If Germany reaches its 65VP:s in 10 turns its a major german victory, within 20 turns a minor geman victory and otherwise its an allied victory. The condition is working fine except that when Germany has a major victory both messages are shown.

Also i used the boardgame mod for some nice feeling. There seem to be some bugs though.

In the end i decided to implement an easier victory conditio than the one i tried.

Since i consider the scenario more or less finished i have upploaded it to the sandbox in the matrix community. What it needs now is playtesting and possibly some balancing and other tweaking. Lets see if someone will be interested in playing it.

wohaaa!

So, fast forward a week or so. I am now playtesting the scenario in 2 different games. No technical issues so far. Also the game seems to be not entirely unbalanced.

The issues i am thinking about right now are:

- How much does Germany need to conquer to win. Should it be enough to capture up to Trondheim, should it be in lesser turns. Do the VP-hexes need some tweaking.
- Is LuftWaffe underpowered. I am pondering adding som Naval air to the Germa fórces to protect and threaten britttish naval forces. But they shouldnt be able to influence the war on the ground, since historicly they didnt.
- Thinking about reducing the allied transport fleet in Scapa flow. It should take a while to get all the brits on shore. Right now in a game i have all the british battalions except one in Norway at the end of turn 2.
- Thinking about adding a couple of PP:s to either side at the start of the game.
- Finally. Is the british navy overpowered. One of my fears is that the 15 turns will be enough for the brits to completely slaughter the german navy and cutting supply in Skagerack. Also i fear that the brits might bombard al german forces in Narvik/Trondheim to hell. Of course they will not have time to do both, but either one is bad in my opinion.

-I think you could build custom units and decrease the air to ground capabilities of German level bombers, so you can use them in antiship missions. They should be able to damage enemy capital ships, and eventually sink one or another warship. Limit their use by making them supply hungry and creatinh wether events.

-The question is that RN should have been able to wipe the Kriegsmarine out of the map, but they weren´t able to find them on time. LAlso British Battleships were slow than German capital ships. I suggest the following steps.
1-Give German ships high hide values (as if they were subs)
2-Give search planes for both sides (so you can try to find the Germans)
3-Give custom units to both sides, so the Germans could use their better speed to avoid the enemy
4-Consider giving fast ships a retreat bonus (like Capr Cruft uses in his excellent Ostfront scenario)

Well, when it comes to creating wheather events and so on i am limited by my capability. The same goes for creating custom units. I am seriously thinking about giving the germans a 10-20 NAV air or something like that, if i am capable.

Actually the germans didnt manage to avoid the british naval units. Naval losses were pretty high for the germans.

this from Wikipedia

"In April 1940, the main action the navy was involved in was the invasion of Norway, where it suffered quite heavy losses, including the heavy cruiser Blücher sunk by Oscarsborg Fortress in the Oslofjord, ten destroyers lost in the Battles of Narvik and two light cruiser lost elsewhere during the campaign. The Kriegsmarine did however sink a number of British ships, including the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious."

Basicly the germans in Narvik did get caught by the Royal navy and lost all destroyers there. Losses were also, comparativly, high elsewhere. I think losses are slightly higher than in this article, but am at work so i cant check. Also the german capitol ships were not that much faster than the british that it would make a difference. They just didnt stumble on each other. Its not su much the speed that dictates if you can avoid the enemy. Artillery range and good recoinnesance are more important.

In summation

Naval air for the germans - Yes
Wheather events and other custom units - Prob not. Dont know how and not that nescessary. The scenario isnt that complicated.
Faster german navy - No. Might consider moving the majority of the british navy up to Scapa Flow though so that their entrance is delayed 1 turn .

-It´s not hard to do so, but it´s time consuming. Maybe I can help you....

-Yes, but most of losses to RN units happened in the battles for Narvik, where the Germans DD´s were caught in enclosed waters (with low fuel and anmo). UK aircraft also sank two warships and coastal Norwegian batteries one CA. My point is that, given the disproportions between forces the RN could have achieved an anihilation battle, similar to that of Tsushima, if they have effectively engaged the divided German forces. Instead, naval losses were more or less even and no German capital ship was lost to RN ships or carrier based aicraft (while the Bristish lost one carrier to the Kriegsmarine), so the performance of RN was poor as compared with its power.
-On speed, the German capital ships were far faster than older RN battleships (about 32 vs 19-23knots).

Have played the scenario in 2 games now (still going on though) and no tecnical bugs so i made some tweaks for balance issues and uploaded it for approval in the scenario bank.
Last changes.

- Added a german naval air fleet with naval air (10% efficiency vs land and 150% efficiency vs sea) of
30 Naval air bombers and 3 fighters.
- added 1 fighter to each german air fleet
- added an additional german paratrooper battalion
- added an additional wolfpack of 10 submarines
- reduced battleship efficiency vs land to roughly 50 %.
- changed the VP of one hex from 1 to 2.

These changes are made to make the allies not dominate completely in the sea and to stop them from bombard the germans in Narvik/Trondheim to death.

I think the scenario is basicly ready to play now.
