World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

best lighting

So we are about to setup WiF again and the eyes are not quite what they used to be.

For the room I am thinking of going with a fair number of potlights on a dimmer so we can adjust light to optimum level.

A cheaper option would be to put in Florescents but the downside is it can cause glare on the maps, especially if we laminate them.

Thoughts? Would you laminate?

I used a plastic sheet to protect my maps and had the same problems with glare.

The last set of maps I bought, I took to Office Max (or Office Depot) and had them mounted on foam board.  This was done by shrinkwrapping the map to the foam board.  It might be cheaper than actually laminating the maps and has the advantage of not being a permanent alteration to the maps.  They could then be placed into a special cabinet or carefully stacked with spacers to preserve a game in progress.  I don't think lamination would give you enough stiffness to do that.

Lighting was always an issue.  We finally used some desk lamps with flexible necks.  That seemed to work as well as anything.  The problem with flourescent lighting is that the bulb is long and casts a larger glare that is harder to avoid by moving your head.

Just one opinion.  I hope it is helpful.

Over the map I used 2 desk lamps (incandescent 60 - 100 watt bulbs) that mounted with clamps to the table. They had articulated joints with swivel points so the light could be repositioned whereever you liked. The only drawback was choosing a place for the clamps that was as out of the way as possible. We also had a couple of table lamps in the room for the chart table (and so the room lighting didn't give the appearance of heart surgery in progress).

I too need lot of light to identify the counters, especially those dark blue British ones.
We play in my garage (my car is ouside), and we have 2 neon lights for the normal ligh of the room, plus 2 economic blub lights, one over each map, hanging from the ceiling, kind of what there is in billard rooms.

We have our game in a room in my village "peoples house" (don´t know if that is a Swedish thing?) and use glass over the maps. Which is great for many things but when the sun shines and finds its way though the windows I sit in the wrong seat and makes it hard to see the counters (because of the reflex in the glass).

We have a 40 W bulb at the table and flourescent tubes in the ceiling. That works fine.

Ah ha! But that gives you the classic excuse if you lose a game: "The sun got in my eyes."[:D]
