HCE Needs Your Help, (call for beta testers)

Post by TonyE »

Now that you've donated to the Matrix coffers by buying HCE we invite you to help the game move forward by giving of your time and talents. The HC3 development group has many hopes for HCE, far more than we can accomplish alone in our volunteered time so we need help!

We are in need of (pretty much in order of need):
 • Instruction manual writers/editors as well as help file editors. The documentation has not kept pace with added features or knowledge gained by players asking questions.
 • Scenario designers/editors willing to work with the existing battleset scenarios fixing victory conditions, orders, and possibly improving the scenarios themselves.
 • Photo searchers, look at the platform display, many platforms do not have photos despite many hours of effort prior to HCE release and also before the 2008.024 release. Obviously many more platforms could have photos.
 • A support person or three to provide player support. I expect a support person to explore the problem in depth, only then giving a useful answer. This means looking at the particular problem, testing it yourself, and then post up your suggestion. Support is about enabling a player, not dressing them down or speaking vagaries about whatever issue the player is having.
 • Beta testers willing to undertake assigned tasks (looking into bug X, testing fix Y).
 • Managers - if we get a fair number of people executing the above tasks, a good manager (or two) will be needed, too much of my time is spent managing, prodding testers, offering support, and too little coding the game.
 • Stick figure artists - see the missile hit animations, I'd like to see volunteers to draw new stick figures for the animations.

What do you get?
 • Access to the latest builds. 2008.024 was the first patch, beta testers are playing with 2008.037 containing bug fixes and new features. It is rare for the testers to keep up with the builds I spit out (fixes/improvements from March still haven't been checked), of course I'd like enough testers to make that a thing of the past!
 • Your name in the credits if you contribute materially to the game, which all volunteers around more than 6 months will have done.
 • Potentially a free copy of the game, this requires effort a step above but is by no means rare.
 • The satisfaction and joy of having helped [8D]
 • A larger than normal say in the future direction of the game.
 • If you are the best of the best, maybe a Harpoon shirt, ballcap, or letter from UncleHarpoon himself.

No doubt on the whole it is thankless work, us wargamers are never happy, though I've been genuinely surprised at the multiple positive comments about HCE so maybe there is hope [:'(] .

Feel free to ask questions on this thread, if you want to go ahead and join the team, head over to http://forum.computerharpoon.com/viewtopic.php?t=49 where you'll find the text to e-mail on to join us. Please cc hc3@harpgamer.com with that application so that we know you have applied and can keep track of you in the approval process. Since all HCE beta testing is done at HarpGamer.com you'll also need an account at the HarpGamer forums.

What would be involved in being a "stick figure artist"? Are you just looking for still pictures which the game engine animates, or do we have to provide animations, or what? Also, regarding photo searching, are there copyright issues to be aware of?

A stick figure artist would use a drawing program that doesn't exist yet (yours truly would have to whip it up) to draw the overhead ship/sub views that you see in the silly missile launch/hit animations.

With the photo searching, yes there are copyright issues since HCE is a commercial product with no budget for said pictures. We have nothing against adding photo credits, but the source of each photo and its copyright status will need to be tracked in some way shape or form. A number of photos are already cleared through the ANW side of the house by Bucks so a photo person can in part leech off of his work.

I'd say top priority should be given to animations as I've always liked them, but on todays faster computers they're useless because they're too quick to follow.
Okay here's my suggestion- To begin with, re-code them to slow them down, then add some new ones later..:)

PS- as regards photos, can't HCE players simply go down their local dockyards/ airbases to take pics of vessels and planes, then contribute them free to the HCE developers for inclusion in the game, surely it wouldn't contravene any copyright considering they own the pics themselves?

Alternatively, why not just write around various embassies/ military museums etc worldwide asking for free 'press handout-type' photos?

I'm going to have to disagree with changing the animations at all. I never even tried them in HCE, but when I did last night, I found that they seemed to be just about the perfect speed! I found that they were fast enough to prevent me from being totally bored watching all the missiles fly. They might be a touch fast, but far better than the HC97 when they just crawled.

Of course, my computer is pretty old and only 1.6mHZ, but I think that they are fine. Of course, I'm just going to turn them off now that I have taken a look, too, so whatever you decide, it won't affect me, personally. [;)]

Pretty animations sell games, ask any game designer who's now rolling in cash from sales..;)
Okay, the HC anims aren't so pretty but who cares, they're still highly dramatic and add to the enjoyment.
Pity they can't be slowed down a bit, maybe there could be options for slow/ med/ fast/ off graphics speed to suit different PC's..
Animations sell games, pure and simple.

I'm not against slowing them down and I don't even think it would be all that difficult, adding options is difficult so it'll be one speed fits all <g>.

Anyway, can you time the animation length in some manner? I've always found them to be a perfect speed so maybe they are running super fast on some machines, and slower on others.

It's impossible to time them, you might as well try to time the blink of an eye..:)
Years ago on my old 486 PC the anims were just right, not too slow, not too fast, but with the advent of faster machines the anims naturally became too fast to follow and therefore virtually useless.
Mines nothing special, just sort of average-
AMD Sempron 3000+
512Mb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400 128Mb

To get an overview of the matter maybe you could run a poll of HCE players asking them-
1- Do you play with animations toggled on?
2- If you answered 'no', is there any particular reason you toggle them off?
3- If you answered 'yes', how important do you think they are to the enjoyment of the game?
4- Do they play too fast, just right, or too slow on your machine?
5- Would you like to see all the animations revamped to look better, including new ones?

I switched the animations off immediately because, with the missile densities involved for a large air strike, they waste WAY TOO MUCH time. A full deckload strike from a CVN can launch well over a hundred missiles, and call forth at least that many SAMs in response if the target is a surface group. At a couple of seconds per missile animation, you could easily spend ten minutes watching the same two or three animations over, and over, and over, and over, and ... you get my point ... [:@] No matter how good the animations are, they get tedious after the fiftieth repetition.

Bingo.

The only one that is kinda 'cool' for me is to watch a nuke hit the target. [8D]

Yes I forgot that not everybody likes to play small scens..:)
With small scens its quite easy to keep track of every individual missile and torpedo fired and get a much more intimate game-play experience, and the animations enhance that experience, for example if your Nanuchka fires off 6 Sirens you can watch each one home in on the target in the animation like watching a soccer ball fly towards the goal after being kicked,AND you see the target firing off defensive SAMs, all great fun and edge-of-seat stuff as you will each missile to strike home and not miss or splash into the sea..:)
Okay, if people want to switch the anims off the option exists so there's no problem there, but for those of us who like to keep them on, they're nowadays too fast and therefore near-useless anyway (at least on my PC).
So the best way forward would be to either re-code the anims and give them slow/medium/fast play options so people could select the best setting for their PC, or create a small 'Animation Speed Options' utility available for download into the HCE folder..:)
