I didn't enjoy ...

From the legendary team at 2 by 3 Games comes a new grand strategy masterpiece: Gary Grigsby’s War Between the States. Taking gamers back to the American Civil War, this innovative grand strategy game allows players to experience the trials and tribulations of the role of commander-in-chief for either side. Historically accurate, detailed and finely balanced for realistic gameplay, War Between the States is also easy to play and does not take months to finish.

AACW is unquestionably the civil war game. It is intended to be ultra-detailed and very complex and not aimed for casual gamers.

Undeniably, it's become better and better with constant patching, however, the perfect game doesn't exist. AACW lacks in simplicity but it's a willing choice of the DEVs to reduce micromanagement where possible but to keep detail level as deep as possible at the same time, which is a compromise that can't always succeed in deliverying what the players want. Many in the AACW community push towards even more realism and it's a struggle between conservatives and progressists... [:)]

To add to the strenghts of AACW the files are totally moddable. I suggest anyone who hasn't tried yet to try Clovis' struggle for a vast future mod. This changes the game completely...towards realism and historicity making it a game inside the game.

On the AI side, given the complexity level, i am amazed the AI does work at all. It's poor, but that's another point in my favour when i say that strategic games are only built with an AI because they have to sell. Technically, no AI can ever beat the fun and difficulties of playing against humans.

If you take AACW and play a PBEM, even the n00best opponent will give you much more troubles than the hardest AI.

Anyway, being a beta for WBTS and AACW and also having played (and still playing regularly) FoF, i can state quite clearly that all these games have strong and weak sides and while the subject would demand a major commitment on a 50-man sized DEV team, each of the producers, with their limited resources have done a great job in recreating all the aspects of the civil war.

I totally agree with this and IMHO any ACW gamer who doesn't grab all three while they're available will regret it in years to come. This is an embarrasment of riches for ACW grand strategy and I doubt there will be another such slew of great ACW grand strategy titles for a long time.

Sorry, no can do - but we're continuing to work on EIA so hopefully it will be more to your taste soon. I can assure you that you'll find WBTS quite palatable at initial release though. Eighteen video tutorials and four in-game tutorials make the learning curve fairly trivial.

I have went crazy lately and been buying games left and right.  I'll probably end up buying this before it is all over.  I have to say Gary Grigsby + any type War Game usually = HOURS OF FUN.  At least that has been my experience although I have not bought everything he has developed.

Definitely EiANW should have tutorials...i am at a loss even with the explanations and manual + example of a turn. Follow closely explanations, try to put troops on map and get error...without any explanation....it's a SPARTAN Ui and bad manual, no vids....the opposite of wbts [:)]
