choosing ships for a TF

Post by bigbaba »

hallo gentlemen,

i wonder if there is a MOD which helps to make the right choice of the right warships for different missions. for example a DD with good AA for CV-escort or a DD with a lot of LL-torpedos for surface attack.

as i know, the AA/anti-sub..strenght of all ships are visible in the WITP-admirals edition. is there a similar mod for UV to quicken and to simplify forming TFs?

Hi bigbaba,

just look into Miller´s recent thread in "The War Room" section here on the UV forum... There´s a distinguished description at least for the IJN from a guy who certainly knows what he is talking about...
Not sure if there is something analogical for the allied player available.

You can right click over a ship and see some info on it.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

It would be nice if that info was more readily available. Picking the "best" ships is often such a PiTA that I don't do it.

I agree. And for me the "best" ship often becomes the one with the least system damage rather than the one actually best suited for the task.

We all feel that different ships suit different purposes, yet at the same time SYS damage is always a factor as nobody wants to run their fleet into the ground (so to speak).

I feel this way as a general rule:

Old & slow BBs are good for bombardments during invasions and staying on station to protect the landings.

Fast BBs for bombardment, surface combat and most important, CV escort.

CVEs are good for shifting planes between Oz and Noumea, ASW, air support for landings and emergency CV replacement duties in low to medium threat areas.

CAs & CLs are used for CV escort depending on their AA values, otherwise surface combat and sometimes CLs for fast trans.

DDs for surface combat depending on # of gun & torp tubes (Long Lance for Japs), escort duties for CVs & transports in high threat areas based on AA values and ASW values, weak DDs for rear area escorts and of course they're always available for fast trans.

Allied subs: S class boats are hunters as their fish work and others for minelaying or hunting.
Jap subs: minelaying and /or hunting as by '43 they're dead meat to Allied ASW so use 'em while they work.

It's mostly sorting out trhe DDs that are best for AA and best for ASW that is the PITA and ends up being the "least system damage is best cause I'm too lazy to invest the time to stop and look up the charactistics of each ship before adding it ot a given TF" approach.

Yep, the DD's are my main nemesis on that front as well because there are so many classes.

Forget the classes and think of the TF mission:
Air Combat needs a high AA value
Surface combat needs gun & torp tubes
Bombardment needs the same as surface except higher endurance
ASW needs high ASW ratings
Escorting convoys can be the worst of the lot, depending on the threat environment.

Yeah but I can never recall which classes are good at what and my ship recognition skills stink anyways so I always have to click through to the details screen.

like tocaff said:

create a new TF and then right click the ships in the port and you get a quick summary of their guns, torpedos, AA-power and ASW-power.

that should be enough to put the ships in the right TF.

Again, that is the PiTA. I wish the ship list had some sort of "value indicator" of those capabilities so I didn't have to drill into each ship. I know HOW to pick the right ships I just hate the process.

The screen with the ship data is the "value indicator", but I don't see how the data needs to be squeezed onto an already full screen.  If everything were supplied to us on 1 master page it would be so small and hard to sort through that you'd be happy with the way it is now.  UV gives general data and by clicking on the ship name gives specific data.  You could always make a paper listing, in alphabetical order of ships by name, types, gun size & # of tubes, torpedo size & # of tubes, depth charge types & #s plus reloads, radar (if any) & it's type, speed, endurance. Then highlight each ship's strengths so you can sift through that.......well you get the picture that clicking is easier.

now if that comforts you:

i even didnt knew, that you can right click ships in the TF-selection screen. so thats a huge relief for me.[:)]

Don't know if any of you will find this helpful but:

Bensons (6250), Bristols (6250): aa/cvtf escort
Farraguts (5750), Porters (7500), Bagleys (8000): sctf
Sims (6250), Mahans (6500): convoy escort
Benhams (7500): I keep sending them back in the early game to make sure I have enough escorts for CVs and BBs in PH, after that whatever is needed
Fletchers (6250): Everything

The endurance numbers help me remember which ones are which: 8000, 5750 and the Porters (there are only 4 of them) are for sctfs. You can use the Porters for aa/cvtf as well; however, historically their 5/38 mounts were only sp not dp capable and their aa rating should be much lower. There are a lot of 6250s so I usually send the Sims over to Australia for convoy escort in the early game so the only 6250s by Noumea I know are for cvtf escort. The Fletchers come around later and can be used for anything.

Been a while since I played IJN, can only think of the following off hand:

Shiratsuyu, Hatsuhara, Akitsuki: aa/cvtf escort
Yugumo (w/ radar): sctf
Minekaze: convoy escort

Miller's list in the war room is better than anything I can think up.

Wow, talk about a stupid moment, that's the way I feel for not using those endurance measures to help know the "class". Good hint and good list.

The Porter 5/38 Mk. 22 guns were not counted for AA, only the 5/38 Mk. 12 DP guns of the other DD. Porters just have a somewhat high AA rating because of the 16x 40mm and 12x 20mm guns.
