AI Pulled Off A Surprise Attack

Post by TimoN »

In the middle of nowhere my carrier group got intercepted and the enemy managed put a fish into Junyo.

Can you guess which ships the enemy used to attack my TF? As you can see from the screenshot it says it was a surface combat so it was not a sub.

Nah, can't be Boise.

Every ship hasn't taken at least 30 shell hits and sunk.

It was the Takanami. They were going through a dry run on torpedo procedures and someone goofed...

Incompetent TF Leader. Expell him to Tokio for Court Martial. The DD commanders that should be screening the force should get a long stay in dry too.

I can easily see how this could happen because 1) the AI would think nothing of sailing a lone PT boat around the middle of the Pacific, without gas, and 2) the AI can peak and see your CVs, so if the PT boat is within range...voilla!

Carrier survived. I don't remember the exact damage, because it was so long time ago. Anyway even a small damage to carrier takes long time to repair. It really hurt.

One thing about carriers, once they are hit, you can pretty much write off operations with them for the better part of a year.  It's really kinda rediculous that I can repair a BB in less than a month from 40 damage, but a carrier with 10 damage takes 10 weeks.

It's that wooden flight deck thing. The Brit carriers aren't too bad.

Carriers usually don't repair slower than battleships. Put them in a large port with a good repair shipyard, and make sure no other (small) ships are repairing at the same port. If you still don't see repairs for several days, you might be hit by a bug. Do something with the ship (e.g. exchange the captain, or move it around a bit), and repairs should start again.

I seriously doubt that you have ever repaired a BB from 40 sys damage in less than a months time... [:-]

there´s not much difference between repairing BBs or CVs.

Would this work?  I know it's gamey, but still:

Could you place PT boats out in mid ocean and just leave them there, sort of like semi-mobile minefields waiting on an enemy TF to stop on top of one?  If they don't move they aren't generating much in the way of detection values, and just 2-5 of them would be such a small number that they'd be hard to spot from naval search attempts.  Sure they would eventually run out of fuel, but so what?  They aren't moving anywhere, and if you wanted you could always send an AK over there to refuel and escort them back to a base.

Actually I did. BB Ise went into port at Singapore with 42 damage in the late part of march 42. By the end of April I had it down to 9 damage and sailed it back out into the fight, where it got torpedoed again and is now sitting at Singapore with 45 system damage. Only this time its not the only ship there, so its repairing much slower.
