Airborne Can't Move over Water

Post by Lester »

Hi,

I have a bug with my TOAW III. I can't move embarked airborne over water hexes. Airborne will embark but will not go over water hexes. They will move over land hexes so they are not locked in position. This happens for several scenerios such at Malta, Siciliy, Crete, etc., so it is not a scenerio problem.

Is there a patch for this?

I have TOAW III, Ver 3.2.29.27

?

I've never seen this. Are you trying to move the unit to the water hex or something? Or are you clicking on the land hex you want to drop on?

For example in the Sicily scenerio. I can load up my US and Brit Airborne. If I move the curser over the land where they stage from, the path is displayed. If I move the curser over the water to Sicily, no path is displayed and they will not move. I can get them to drop one or two hexes from their bases but as soon as I hit water, no path is displayed. Maybe they cannot go over non friendly controlled hexes? This also happens in the Malta, Rhodes, Crete etc. scenerios. Therefore, I don't think it has anything to do with capacity or anything specific to the scenerio. Basically, the above scenerios are un-playable. (The Germans can't get to Crete!) One time, one US unit was able to go to Sicily, but then the following airborne units could not follow it. It looks like a software bug to me. Maybe I should reload the software(?)

1) your units in question are starting on AirBase hexes...; you've loaded onto aircraft...
2) the above isn't the result of attempting the 'airborne' move during a 'cease-fire' turn...?
3) Have you achieved air superiority? Try this again AFTER you've set all available (in range) fighters to AS...
4) Just a 'TIP'...after moving all ftrs in range, and setting them to AS, run a 'bmbr' mission to opponent air-base(s) for round ONE, execute, then run your AirBorne missions...

Your problem sounds like you've not taken care of the 'enemy' air cover/ and-or your starting your moves too early in the game (cease fire exclusion zones still in effect)

Got 'screenies', other examples ?

This sounds like there is a Cease Fire in effect. Player 1 starts off with control of the water hexes, so if you are player 2 (or if you are player 1 and p2 has run a ship across the water) then you would not be able to cross this line...ALthough the fact it's happening with all those scenarios would seem to suggest otherwise...If you could upload a screenshot, or two, or a zipped up save one of us would, undoubtedly, take a closer look for you.
To repeat history in a game is to be predictable.

Are you sure that you're not just "giving up" when the path disappears over the water hexes? When you bring the mouse cursor over land hexes, the movement path will be traced on the water hexes, but it won't display while the mouse cursor is actually over water.

Are you using the most current patch? There were issues with pathfinding on earlier versions when trying to move airborne units that were too close to a map edge, if the path to the destination wanted to trace off the map during part of its movement. If you're still having problems, after patching, then please send a detailed list of some of the disallowed movement paths, so that we can see what's going on. Thanks.

Hi Guys,
After reading all the replies, I was able to sort it out. It looks like the software is OK, just some inexperience with TOAW III. For example, in one scenerio I kept trying to lead my airborne invasions with the HQ units, DOH!!

Thanks for the help.
