Goblin vs Red, Russia, 9/42

Germans - Goblin
Soviet - Red

6000 pts.
Spetember, 1942

Round 1

First German wave introduced feared Tiger on Eastern front with a mix of StuGs of different mods in the center. On the flanks there are StuGs overlooking the field from the hills creating a shield against a potential breakthrough. A few recon probing units have been eliminated. The fog of war descended on the field.

Keeping in mind Goblin's reputation, I overcompensated a little for a meeting engagement, putting a couple of forts on one of the flanks. Honestly thought they would be blinded by smoke screen but instead Goblin used his arty in favorite tactics of destroying my T-34s with over the top 82 mm mortar fire. Right now my commanders are trying to figure out how to advance in the open field with Goblin's Tigers waiting to eaxact the revenge for earlier losses.

Those forts killed a Tiger. My units about-faced and left. As this is a points-per-turn map, I'm gonna have to deal with them eventually, or lose by points.

Wow! I just saw something I have NEVER seen before! BM-13 Rocket launcher trucks, advancing with the forward Soviet forces! Presumably for direct fire! I'm actually a bit nervous!

There are also KV1C's here and there, along with the reliable T34. No tank casualties that round, but we won't disappoint you for long! :D

Yes, Katuyshas was an improvisation. I wanted to see how they handle Tigers but targeting was not good enough so until the next time :)

All is quite before the storm. As I expected there were some StuGs left in reserves to contain a breakthrough but I got to see them trying to take my BM-13 and AA trucks. Luckily those survived by jumping left and right and left and right dodging a lot of shells.

The absense of regular GE infantry units is a little puzzling to me. It seems the OOB is based on armored formations with light recon units.

KV-1C's die hard, but they do die. One goes down under the massive pounding of an 88 from a Tiger, and one is hit multiple times with a Stug's 75mm until the crew walks the rounds into a view slit.:p Vulnerable Location, baby! Another was crushed like a soup can from a 150mm round mounted on a 33B! CRUNCH!

I have now reversed my reversal, attacking forward instead of backwards! I may reverse that after further review...:D

Die, commie, die!!

Turned out BM-13s can shoot rather well. May be not from the first, second or third shot but I'm getting to like them for direct rather than indirect fire.

This turn Goblin probed the line with some StuGs which found their untimely end under a barrage of unguided missiles. The trick is to find an armored target from a maximum range and pound it to pieces. Distance proves to be life saver for BM-13s for it saves it from the reach of the AFV's main cannon and one just needs to hope for one missile to land on the top of the AFV. I think I just found a miracle weapon against panzers. Once the the shots are exhausted withdraw or get a smoke from a nearby unit to deny the surviving AFVs the ability to respond.

As StuGs roam around trying to pick a fight the Tigers are sitting still creating a stronghold firebase. They are brand new tanks and German commander is not sure he wants to write them off as a total loss or worse have one of them fall into enemy's hands.

A Soviet cavalery unit attempted to sneak by on a flank but was caught by a StuG. Needless to say, 10 horses against a tank, you figure it out.

Those BM-13's never hit one Stug!! They destroyed them by just landing in the hex! Goodness, but they are dangerous! I don't think I will ever buy large bore CS vehicles again. Why fire at 2 shots per round when six (at least) is better! And cheaper.

Tanks dieing on both sides now. There are alot of KV-1C's, and they are even standing up to the Tiger's claws. It will be tough!

A good StuG is a dead StuG

Post by red »

I wish you'd been there to witness a 5 unit cavalry attack on a lonely StuG. I almost thought those men and horses died without a reason but at the last moment a magic bullet or more exact Molotov cocktail got the job the one.

On the other flank, Katuyshas keep slamming taking out another StuG.

So far the developments have been a little unorthodox from Soviet side. Horsemen and BM-13s against StuGs. :)

Two T-34s took on another StuG. One T-34 avenged the death of its buddy. On the ridge to the south, another StuG feel to single shot from a T-34 which drove a little while to ge there.

Center is still a little dead. Literally. The menacing force of several Tigers kkeps Soviets at bay. But the StuGs around them keep melting away. Soviet command considerds a wild idea that they ran out of gas or taking a lunch break.

BTW, I need to know the address where to send the flowers and condolences to. Imagine sitting inside a steel box being slammed with heavy HE rounds thinking: "next one is mine." Geez, scarry. A great weakness of Tiger is its cost. It may be one hell on wheels but it's very expensive hell on wheels therefore it's preserved. I had my KV-1C sitting there waiting for a duel and yet Tigers keep their tails between their legs and keep sending naive StuGs to their deaths. By simple math, 1 Tiger = 3 StuGs.

Goblin is Goblin!

A sacrifice for the Fatherland!

Post by Goblin »

Well, it took me a few rounds to set up, and cost me more Stugs than I imagined (Thrice damned rockets!), but one word makes it all ok...

AMBUSH!!

ALOT of commie tanks died this round. And I killed some of those rocket trucks!!:p Hoarded Marders have peaked the northern hill, and engaged enemy T34's. Another group has killed a rocket truck, and set an overwatch on my Tiger's flanks.

The center hill is now owned by my units, and my Tigers and 33B's have smashed through the center lowlands. Commie armor melts away like the wax of a candle. The fort that killed a Tiger earlier took an 88 round, but it fights on for now.

Goblin- A Goblin prepares one last surprise;)

PS- In case you couldn't tell, red, they ain't hiding any more! ;) As for that address, send them to Red Square!;)

Bloody mess

Post by red »

I don't know think it's fair to say there was a lot of strategic thinking involved into what happened. I'd call it a brute force approach. The ambush did work however for I thought the center vhexes were givien without much fighting at first.

Well lessons learned. Meanwhile StuGs keep disapearing here and there.

I'm still standing! The hopes are dim but I want to take some more panzers down. BM-13s tried to take out another StuG but it got lucky and they didnt :(

Tigers are rolling like an armored steam roller. I'm fighting to the last tank.

Like a sissy girl...

Post by Goblin »

I have located and engaged TWO KV-1C's! They are on the southern hill of the map, right where I was totally sure that they were not. I discovered them with my last surprise....Captured T34's! I will kill the Communists with their own equipment!

Maybe not. I took a hit from a KV gun, and only the slope on my tank saved the crew. AHAH! I am alive, commie! Take this-BOOM! CLONK!! Penetration 72, armor in the mid 150's or so. What the he!! am I doing?!?!? There is no way a captured T34 is going to kill that monstrosity! Buh-bye.... I ran like a sissy girl. Then I rolled a 33B up.

KABOOM!! A Miss! Try Again...KABOOM!! A Miss. Out of shots?!? Crap. The KV's live. For now...

That Russian fort took a pot shot at a T34 also, and, yes, I shot back! Lord, I don't remember drinking heavily! I popped a nice smoke screen to hide behind, like, you guessed it, a sissy girl.

Goblin- A Goblin will get them all:mad:

Fight to the last tank!

I finally got to see some action. In the south, the fort took out a German T-34, hard to argue with 120mm. KV tried to take out StuIG-33B but had to retreat. In the north, T-34s took out a couple of StuG40s with some lucky shots. One T-34 didn't get lucky and caught a round from Marder. A T-34 manuevered to the rear of StuIG 33B and took that bad boy out with several Tigers around it barely had room to escape.

surrender

Post by red »

Clearing out my PBEM backlog I surrender: My last T-34 is staring at a Tiger on the hill and the kitty cat can't do anything since the game is over :)

Points:
Germany 13+K
Soviet Union 8+K

The last highlights of the battle included SU cavlry chasing Marders around the field and killing them like they were made of paper. Revenge is sweet !
