Beaufort torpedos and bombs

Post by Jagger2002 »

I have been using the Beaufort a little lately. The Beauforts main weapons is listed as a torpedo. I have been using it at 1000 ft and it is dropping 500Lb bombs instead of torpedos.

Do I need to drop the altitude to a 100 ft to get it to use torpedos? I thought the torpedo altitude was hard coded.

My meager contribution is that the manual does state you have to set the altitude at 100 feet to drop torpedoes, but I cannot comment about the specific use of Beauforts.

[still reading the manual :(]

You shouldn't have to. Check the ranges that the attacks are being made at. The Beaufort only carries torpedoes for strikes within 247 miles (8 hexes), but it carries 2 250kg bombs for extended range missions out to 330 miles (11 hexes).

As for altitude, the altitude that you set is the "cruise to target" altitude (and attack altitude for level bombers when bombing). Once it reaches the target it should drop down to 100 feet to drop torpedoes or stay at assigned altitude to bomb. That's how it works for me with Kates, Bettys, Nells, Devastators (the only ones that I've played with that have actually hit anything :D ).

I think it might be a range issue. I've had Devastators use 500lb bombs if at extreme range. I've yet to see Marauders drop torps, two torps were the standard AS load out for this type of AC in Pacific, I think.

Beaforts

It must be range in your case Jagger. I've had Beaufort VICs drop torpedos quite a bit.

They're quite effective, too:cool:

Actually I thought it might be a range issue as well. But last night, I had them attack at a six hex range/1000 ft and they dropped 500 Lb bombs. They did pretty well claiming 3 hits on the Kongo, one on the Haruna and one on the Myoko. But I really would like to see them drop torpedos. Most of the squadron is now in the shop, but I have reset their altitude to 100 ft. Hopefully they will get another shot at them and will use torpedos rather than strafing.

It is interesting that the Beaufort is listed as a level bomber with a main load of torpedos. I think it may be using bomber loads as a level bomber when altitudes are greater than a 100 ft as is typical with all level bombers. Perhaps a hundred feet is necessary to trigger the change in armament. Otherwise with a short range of 6 hexes, the planes should have used torpedos.

I hate learning by trial and error something simply like this.

I have Beauforts in my base in San Cristobal islands. The range from there to Lunga is 6 hexes and I have Beaufort hit a lot of ships with torpedos

Well, my Beauforts did attack again this turn. Set at 100 ft and a range of 7 hexes, they strafed battleships and heavy cruisers.

&^%*%%^%$^%$^% it!!!

I give up. I will take the 500 lb bombs and assume Beauforts using torpedos is an urban myth....

well don't use 100' . 100' feet attacks seem to be broken and cause bombers to only strafe and not skip bomb. 1000, or 2000 feet seem to work well.

The Beaufort...

Post by Erik Rutins »

I haven't had any problems with it at 1000 ft. Within normal range, it always attacks with torpedoes for me. Could it be at the edge of normal range for most of these attacks? Not sure how much the commander plays a role in whether bombs vs. torps are loaded...

Well there were two attacks that I looked at closely.

The first attack at a 6 hex range and 1000 ft altitude resulted in the Beauforts using 500 Lb bombs.

The second attack at 7 hex range and 100 ft altitude resulted in the Beauforts strafing the targets.

The planes were set for naval attack and rest.

Would the commanders decide to use bombs instead of torpedos against a TF of 2 BB's and 5 CA's?

Perhaps there is some sort of unit commander decision on weapons used.

I don't know of anything I as a player can do to influence weapons loadout except set on naval attack and vary the altitude.

I am not going to worry about it much further. 500 lb bombs are fine.

My Beauforts attacked with torpedos tonight. Altitude same as usual of 1000 ft. Range was 2 hexes.

Don't ask me why but they did.

The Allies attack my transports to Australia with torp-wielding Beauforts all the time. :( ... :))
