depot bug ?

Post by bresh »

1.02K/1.02

There seems to be a bug, regarding placement of depots at non.controlled ports.

Example one. pbm game,

Naples is beeing besieged by GB, GB has no supply sources within normal supply lines. Yet game allows GB to place a depot at Naples to allow sea supply, even though the port is not owned by GB, but by the besieged force ?

Example two, Russia invasion fleet is retreated into a Prussian port after naval battle. Normal Russian supply lines are not within reach.
Russia is still able to place a depot in the Prussian port, even though they had no corps there at the start of the phase ?

Maybe i just misunderstand the rules for sea supply ?

I cannot find where this would be illegal. The rules are a little vague. Sea supply can extend to a depot in the city or surrounding area and mentions nothing about the city needing to be unbesieged or needing to be friendly controlled??? Common sense might tell me that the port in this case would not be needed to provide the supply. Your thoughts? I guess what I am trying to say is that this was intentional.

I am pretty sure sea supply requires ownership of both ports.

Marshall, are you sure you're not thinking of invasion supply? Sea supply definitely requires control of the port. From the manual:

"In order to trace supply across sea areas there must be one of a major power's depots in each of the two friendly controlled ports between which supply is to be traced. At least one of these ports must contain a fleet(s) of the major power and that port must be a supply source or be able to trace a valid supply chain via depots to a supply source. Neither port may be blockaded. If these conditions are fulfilled, the ports are valid links in a supply chain. The effect of this is as if the depots were in adjacent areas (regardless of the number of sea areas actually between them) for all purposes including placement of reinforcements. NOTE: Sea supply will not be checked for in newly captured port cities until AFTER the phase in which city control was established."

The game does usually require these things, from what I've seen. In fact, in my experience, the game has been quite picky about establishing control of the port. I'm thinking of a case where I landed a corps at Alexandria. There was no one in the city, indeed no enemy around at all, but the game wouldn't let me build a depot the next turn until I had detached a factor into the city. So what Bresh is reporting is definitely something aberrant.

Bresh, did you try actually using the depot for supply? It seems to me I've seen a few cases in which the game gets a bit confused about where you can build a depot, but then correctly deems you to be out of supply if they don't make a valid chain. (It's supposed to tell you that when you try to build it, but that's a different bug from incorrectly tracing sea supply.)

I stand corrected 7.4.3.1 does state that the both ports do need to be friendly controlled.

Friendly controlled unbesieged port = sea supply
Friendly controlled besieged port = besieged port supply

Appreciate the correction!

Bresh, do you have that game?
Thank you
