Hyper-War: ny59giants (A) vs. n01487477 (J)

Post by ny59giants »

This AAR is closed to n01487477 (Damian).

This will be my second game against Damian. The first was a short lived one in which I had taken over the game as there was a conflict with his Allied opponent about the need to change command to non-Chinese for them to leave China and attack Hanoi. It was May 42 with him having landed at Chittagong playing Big B's mod and I did not feel that India could be successfully invaded that late into the game. I was able to save India, but lost 3 CVs in the South Pacific. [:(] The news came out about this time concerning Admiral's Edition, so we ended the game as we felt the stalemete would last for a long time in that game.

We did a few days of Empire's Ablaze, but have restarted with the latest version (1.34). I was able to suggest to Nemo that the Allies recieve a few subs with FP. The Barracuda Class subs (all three of them) come equipped. There were many Allied CL/CA/BB without FP and/or ac capacity. Most of those have been corrected, but a few remain without FP even though they have ac capacity.

I was working on my first turn (non-historical) when I decided to check my e-mail account and found out that Damian had decided to attack Russia. Thus, my choice of Hyper-War for a title as everyone will be involved at the start. I have never played with Russia active from the start (I did briefly with a few short RHS games, but there was no actual shooting). Thus, more learning...and hopefully more fun.[:D]

I may have a slight advantage as I have another game with this mod going as the Japanese vs John 3rd.

Now, on with the war.

Comments: This game will be a learning experince for both of us and hopefully fun. I have about 120 subs: American Fleet - 38; S-Class - 12; British - 3; Dutch - 14; Russian - 53. His ASW and minesweeping capabilities will soon be tested. The American Fleet subs have been sent out in 2 subs TF to lay mines. The Russian L-Class are off to make the northern ports in Japan dangerous for shipping. The other Russian subs are laying mines on their way to Manila to block the straits between Korea and Japan and then some to mine Formosa's ports. My 2 B-17s squadrons at Clark will hit his undefended base on Formosa - Resources. Nemo and Alfred have spoken about this game being about Logistics. This will the opening attack against his Resources. An attack against other targets has been plotted, but will take time to implement.

Enjoy and bring your and/or

The CVEs are to the north while the CVLs are to the south. CA Houston will run across the north coast of Borneo, while CL Boise will run south and past Balikpapan just in case he moves the CVLS south. You will notice some TF to the east of the PI which may try to reach safety (and avoid KB) by going across the whole Pacific.

In Russia, my LBA has been sent north as their number of damaged aircraft is high and their morale is that bad. The subs are out to mine bases and the straits around Japan. The suface fleet and AKs have been sent north and what survives will head for Dutch Harbor. The DDs have short legs, so it be a very short tripped. However, the American TKs in San Fran and Seattle will try to bring fuel to them. The Lex and Enterprise may joing Sara to head up here (don't know for sure, yet). He has 2 BBs in the area, so he look to engage my fleeing ships.

Comments:

I lost another 2 Russian subs to ASW attacks by LBA. They may pay a heavy price trying to exgress through the southern exit.

My Dutch air force recieved a welcome surprise this turn. The ABDA HQ in Batavia sucked up almost all the supply from Soerabaja to put it near 25k. Thus, I could fill out most of my squadrons. However, with their limited pilot pool, some will need training which they will get in short order. [:)]

Damian wrote that he was still feeling like he had the flu and forgot to order another attack by KB. However, BB Pennsylvania slides to the bottom of Pearl during the night.

Some normal invasions are missing. What is he up to?? I am playing as Japan in another game, so he know I have solid grasp of his force availablity. PBYs will have their naval searches increased to find out if my fears are unfounded.

Comments:
KB continues to move off to the SE. Is she going CV hunting?? The normal invasions of Jolo and Davao did happen. I have yet to see any on the 4 plus Division worth of troops that start in Japan.

My 2 CV TF will meet at Canton island next turn and suck up the 8,000 in fuel before moving to the east. 2 TF of warships have left Pearl with speed over 30. Now, another TF with ships that have a speed over 20 are leaving. My AKs and other slower ships will leave in the next few days.

11th - 10 Sally from Pagan hit one of my AKs fleeing due east from Luzon, but only 10 sys damge.

Comments:
The massive exodus of Russian subs to the south is almost done with only two lost on the Turn 2. Another has over 50 flt damage and may not make it. I told Damian that most will not go to Manila (plans are for Soerabaja). Don't want them to make it that far and get hit by 800kg AP bombs while disbanded.
Operation Deep Strike will come as a mild shock to Damian, but it will require him to spread out his forces to prevent a repeat it. Details to follow. [;)]
KB is now due east of Kwajelain and seems to be heading home. My 2 CVs have now started to head NE towards Christmas where Sara is headed from San Diego.
Most of the lightly damaged ships have left Pearl and are headed to San Fran.
TKs are headed for Dutch Harbor to refuel the Russian ships that can make it there. An AO with a few escorts are headed for north of Attu Island from Dutch.

Comments:
The last of my fleet at Pearl has left. BB Oklahoma, Nevada, Tennessee, Maryland, CA San Fran, AV Tangiers, and 4 DDs as escort will take the long trip to the very southeast corner of the map and then over to South Atlantic Entry base where there is a large Repair Shipyard (value - 832) to work quitely on them for months. Only 3 BBs are left due to severe damage.

There's no Zero bonus in this mod. I switched the plane slots around so it applies to the A5M4 ( which I figured few people would use past December 41 ).

You'll need at least 1,000 to one vs that Fortified Region. They were, historically VERY tough nuts to crack. With 4 or 5 attacks by 2 or 3,000 AV you should manage to get that ratio though so just keep attacking.

Nope, just that those Buffaloes need optimal conditions to win against Zeroes ( fighting against Zeroes tied to escort bombers at long range after several similar missions over previous days ). Really though the trick is just not to fight the Zero and to bide your time until you can upgrade your forces. If you can make it into May 1942 then the RAF becomes a force to be reckoned with and you don't need to fight your airforce forward to make it into May ( although posting a few Hurri squadrons and POSSIBLY that Spitfire squadron forward would help ).

All Hail the Mighty PT Boats!!

Post by ny59giants »

12/14/41 Battle off Mershing

While the rash landing at Mershing to cut off the rest of the Army from an orderly retreat into Fortress Singapore had caught HQ in Singapore off guard, the response has been swift throughout the Allied command structure (me [;)]). Dutch PT boats resting at dockside in Palembang had been ordered to Singapore to refuel and sent at night to cover the short 60 miles to Mershing where....

SS Trusty is hit once by an ASW attack from the DDs escorting the CVEs and will need to retire back to Singapore. Meanwhile, the sound of another AK hitting a mine is heard over the sounds of their engines.

Round #1 - The first group of 5 Dutch PT boats runs by BB Kongo, BB Haruna, CA Mogami, CA Mikuma, CA Kumano, CA Suzuya, CL Jintsu, and DD Arashio. No shots or torpedoes find a target. The Japanese have surprise.

Round #2 - The second group of 5 PT boats put a torpedo into the only DD and she is left taking on water. The Japanese have surprise again, but cannot find the range and no hits are scored.

Round #3 - The first group comes around again and no hits are scored.

Round #4 - The second group comes around and no hits. [X(]

Round #5 - The first group maneuvers for position and 2 x Torpedoes hit BB Huruna, but PT boat TM-4 receives 19 hits from 5" and 8" shells before sliding under the waves.

Round #6 - The second group attacks for the final time. CA Suzuya gets hit by one torpedo, while the poor DD gets 2 more and slides beneath the waves.

Comments: 6 torpedo hits for only 1 PT boat lost. [X(] My limited experience has shown that sometimes PT boats are feast (this turn) or famine (just target practice) in naval combat. More ammo for the continuing debate between the pro-PT boat crowd and the anti-PT boat crowd.

Operation Deep Strike - Launched!!

Post by ny59giants »

12/14/41 & 12/15/41

Landings:
Mershing (3, 4, 5, 14 Tk; 4 & 35 Mixed Bde); Miri

Mines:
2 x AKs at Mershing; AP at Aomori (Japan); MSW x 2 are sweeping mines at Tsushima (none hit one, but nice to keep him busy [:D]).

Malaya/Burma:
O20 puts TT x 2 in an AK between Mershing and Kuantan
9 Zekes, 25 Nell vs 2 Wirra-"coffins" at Johore Bahru
59 (8) Betty vs. 14 (2) Buffalo and 5 (1) Hurricane at Singapore
Georgetown falls.

A PT boat is sunk by the DDs escorting his CVEs at Meshing, but manage to hit a DD TT x 1.
See screen shot as too many targets for my PT boats to handle.
O16 had moved to 180 miles SW of Saigon to see if she could get a shot at the damaged BB Haruna trying to make port. She got a single torpedo to hit which will put this BB in the yards for months to come (added to the two she got by PT boats at Mershing). [:D]
He gets his shot in at Singapore -
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 19
Ki-48-I Lily x 30
Ki-21-II Sally x 100

Allied aircraft
Buffalo/F2A x 18
Hurricane I x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-48-I Lily: 3 damaged
Ki-21-II Sally: 3 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo/F2A: 11 destroyed
Beaufort VII: 6 destroyed
Blenheim IV: 3 destroyed
Hudson IV: 2 destroyed
Vildebeest IV: 1 destroyed

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 109

My shot at his CVEs at Mershing comes up short

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 21
A5M4 Claude x 4

Allied aircraft
Beaufort VII x 6
Buffalo/F2A x 25
Hudson IV x 6
Hurricane I x 6
T-IVa x 3
Vildebeest IV x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo/F2A: 11 destroyed
Hurricane I: 4 destroyed
T-IVa: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Vildebeest IV: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
CVL Zuiho
CVE Hosho
DD Honda, on fire
CVE Unyo [Yawata Maru]

A deliberate attack on Mershing, 722:201, reduce the forts to level 2. Thus, my troops are ordered to retreat back to Johore Bhura

DEI:
AP - TT x 1 at Miri by KXV
AP - TT x 3 at Miri by 4 Dutch TB out of Tarakan

Miri - KXV hits another AP, but is sunk by 3 DDs with a single torpedo hit!![X(]
2 more AP are hit with torpedoes by my Dutch TB.
Miri is captured

Luzon:
48 Bettys hit 31st & 41 Divisions retreating from Legaspi.
28 Zeros come in at 100' feet and shoot up 3 out of 5 PT boats. I don't think he likes them much. [:D]

S54 survives a depth charge attack at Legaspi that included ADP x 3 with the ASW value of 10. Time to leave this area for a while.
2 more PT boats are sunk in Manila harbor by 41 Zeros

Rest of PI:
CL Natori is hit by a 250lb bomb from my Kingfishers operating out of Jolo

China:
13 Bettys from Formosa vs 13 P-35 Hawks over Changsha result in no losses.

Russia:
10 fighters, 35 DBs hit Heiho while 13 fighters escort 67 DBs at Mishan.
Japan launches 33N, 19K, 24M at Sovetskaya Gavan.
16 Zeros, 8 (3) Petes, 2 Rufe provide CAP over CV Yamato TF as 14 (5) I-16, 6 (4) Pe-2 fail in their attack on CL Kinu
24 Zero escort 27 Vals at at Paramushiro Jima as a porr AK gets hit 17 times and sinks. 2 more AKs are hit and sunk in the area. I seem to keep missing with where I place my Russian subs. Thankfully, my MSW/DD/TK have avoided the "maiden" mission of CVA Yamato. [8D]
My CD Fortress continues to hold even with 247:1 odds.

Operation Deep Strike: While Damain has chosen to take on Russia from Turn 1, I observed that he left the big Oil center at Shikuka (Sakhalin) without any CAP. Thus, while 36 Nates, 19 Kates, 21 Mary, and 8 Lily hit Sovetskaya Gavan, the 11 I-16 fighters escort 39 IL-2 DBs to Shikuka and damage 12 Oil centers. Next come the 18 Pe-2 from Nikolaevsk and damage 6 Oil. Finally, 16 B-17D and 121 SB-2M from Khaburovxk damage another 42 centers (60 total). The war is now "ON."[:D]
Meanwhile, his attention towards Suchan has picked up with 38 Zeros (he has only 1 Daitai assigned to this region), 12 Vals, 6 Kates, and 6 Sonia.
My CD Fortress is shock attacked at 3591:1 odds, but holds for another day. The odds have gotten worse each day.

New Britain:
Para from the 1 Yoko land and capture Gasmata and thus prevent a line of retreat for the LCUs at Rabaul which falls from a deliberate attack.

Japan:

Rest of Pacific:

Comments:
CVA Yamato goes off the screen for a few days. Where she turns up, I don't know, but she may need to return to port soon as she had attacked enough AKs trying to escape from Russia. I have a Replenishment TF operating farther north to get some of my short legged Russian ships to Dutch Harbor and hopefully beyond. I will retreat to Nome where there 100k in fuel, if needed. The Russian DDs have low endurance, but they will be helpful as they carry mines along with their MSW counterparts.

I'm doing well with my subs, but those that survive ASW attacks are starting to get some sys damage built up and thus after a brief stop at Soerabaja to get the flt damage repaired, they will be headed to Melbourne/Sydney for total repairs.

There is a huge train of transports leaving the confines of the SRA and are headed for Perth and beyond. I got out of Luzon and the rest of the SRA with less sinking than I thought. Why?? Russia. He has sent additional LBA and ships here to try to grab the resources he feels he will need to fuel his economy.

Aleutians

Post by ny59giants »

Before I get caught up with the last 4 days worth, I want to cover plans for a particular region. First will be...

Aleutians
Plans are to defend Umnak Island (USN BF, 2 x AA, EAB, 4 Rgt), Dutch Harbor (USN BF, AA, 14 Canadian Bde), and Cold Bay (USN BF, 153 Rgt, 13 Canadian Bde, Canadian AA). These forces are spread out through Alaska and Vancouver and will be moved to their bases in the coming weeks. The move will be helped out by the addition of the Russian AKs which did run past CVA Yamato. She is on the edge of the island chain currently and looks like she will proceed east and hit Dutch Harbor shortly. On the top of the screen shot is a Replenishment TF which is trying to get the 4 DDs to joining her before heading to Nome (10,000 fuel). They are out of fuel and trying to get the TF to follow the DDs hasn't worked out from turn to turn. Most of my Russian subs are in the various ports and some heading to Pearl, but I am moving them if Yamato continues her due east course.

Russia

Post by ny59giants »

Russia This will be my first game with them active and actually shooting at each other. Thus, a learning curve for both of us.

Plans: I don't know how long I will be able to hold Vladivostok. There are 340,000 in supply which are going to hurt me and vastly help Damian. Suchan, which is just SE of Vlad was captured last turn to 56th "Div" Bde, 200 Division, and 201 Division. Without Russia active, these troops would have been sent somewhere else, so in a way, Russia is a help. I want to conduct a fighting retreat to Khaborovsk and eventually those two northern bases - Blagovyeshevsk and Kuysyskevka. I have my engineers building forts over expanding AF levels.

A few days ago, I hit the Oil centers at Shikuka. Now, if you look at the Japanese bases there and on Hokkaido now have planes at most of the bases to protect them from further attacks. Mission - accomplished!![&o]

I have 4 more Russian DDs up at Magadan, but the Russian DDs have very short legs. Plans are for them to hopefully, remain there and await a suicidal run by a TK to Petropavlovsk to provide fuel for them, but I must wait for CVA Yamato to finish up and go further south (but its nice to have her here vs somewhere else).

China

Post by ny59giants »

China - Both my opponents have expressed a strong dislike for ground combat. They want the glory of the naval battles vs the grind on the ground. Here is where I hope to make it too costly for Damian to pull out any troops.

Plans are going forth right now to hit Nanchang from the east with 9 Field Army's (about 2000 assault value) that are coming from the coast south of Shanghai. While, another 2 Field Army's come from the west. The worse result is for my troops to gain badly needed experience. The Chinese Field Army's are the most common LCUs and when filled out have 867 Rifle squads (the Chinese get 600 per month).

5 Field Army's are closing on Ichang from the NW and another 2 from the SW. Meanwhile, there are two Field Army's trying to move to attack the Bde that is the link to Hankow. Hopefully, I can get the Bde to retreat to Ichang and then destroy them all.
2 Field Army's are moving towards the LCU across the river from Hankow along with one Group Army. These Group Armies have about 500 plus assault value now, but they can fill out their TO&E to have 1296 rifle squads. I have 4 of these monsters to play with.[;)]

He has some divisions assigned to other areas at Canton, If he pulls them out, then they may end up at Australia or India. [:(]

For India, I have 5 Divisions (assault strength less than 100 now, but they can fill out to 432 Rifle squads) along with 2 Field Armies. They will go through Mandalay to Calcutta to rebuild as they will be a major part of my defense of India.

Overall, I want to get my Chinese army very active from the beginning and keep him very busy while my troops gain experience to make them an effective fighting force for the months ahead.

Catch Up Time

Post by ny59giants »

Since I've allowed myself to get behind (actual game date is now 27 Dec), I'll do Combat Reports to get caught up and will plan to change my AAR style after the New Year. I'll cut out all the extras to make it go a little quicker. I'm using Bodhi's Utility, so there is one file with Combat Reports added on top of the previous to assist me.
