Mixing and Matching CV Air Groups

Anybody got tips on how the CV Airgroups work? I have some excess CV Squadrons thanks to the KB turning Enterprise and Lexington into additions to the Great Barrier Reef. I tried putting one of the larger Wildcat squadrons (26 aircraft, 26 pilots) on an escort carrier (capacity 31) after removing the CVEs airgroups. I checked on it one turn later, and only 8 Aircraft and 8 pilots are showing + 18 wildcats in reserve?

Your best bet is either to dispand then as replacements.  OR.  spend some time and effort in bringing them back together and using them as a whole replacement for a CV airgroup...
