Dry Docks

Post by Hornblower »

Are there any provisions for the inclusion of floating dry docks in AE? I would envision them having the ability to repair one major or 2-3 minor ships in the same manor that a larger size-8+ repair yard could. Much like how the Houston was patched up at Ulithi Atoll in November ‘44

Where did you relocate to in Chitown?
I'm a transplanted Chicagoan.
Addison and Western, north sider here.[;)]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

Plainfield, the land of 30 mph winds, ex cornfields and no trees over 8 feet. I'm from upstate NY, so this lack of trees and any sort of elevation seems very unnatural. Wild weather this last 2 days! Tornado watch, severe thunderstorms, heavy winds, sheets of rain, Oh then a few hours of sunshine. I’m married to a Bridgeport south-sider - - Yep she’s a Sox fan.

Only thing I remember about Painfield is that terrible twister years ago.
looking forward to another few series of Cubs/Sox this month.
Go Cubs!![;)]

And according to Hank, Giradi( an ex cub coincidently) is an idiot.[;)]

On the topic of dry docks, according to this site, this is why Brisbane was used for a major naval base.

This site tells of a floating dry dock used by the PT boats in Mindinao..

It would seem that drydocks are simulated well with the current 'Repair yards'device. What would be great would be floating drydocks that would act as a Repair yard' in that they would produce repair points, and be somewhat mobile. Mobility simulated the various tugs and other support craft not in the game.

Floating dry docks are in the game, and they function as a type of AR that specializes in floatation repair. We used the ARD designation to make this relationship more obvious (instead of AFD, ABD, YFD, etc).

Like ARs, ARDs have no specific capacity - any AR can repair any ship and any ARD can repair any ship. This means ARDs can lift the largest warships so only a few of the largest ARDs are in the OOB.

They are mobile, but moving them around is very dangerous and there is a chance they can be damaged or lost while under tow.

Position an AR and an ARD at a base and you have the equivalent of a small shipyard – able to fully repair light damage and to get badly damaged ships seaworthy for the long trip home.

I hope the manual has a good index, I'm already having trouble keeping track of ships types just reading the forums!

There was a floating drydock at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41.  I guess it was there to supplement the repair facilities since the Pacific Fleet had just moved there a year or so earlier, but will it be in the OOB on that day?

Is there anything in AE which will be able to escort a stricken ship AND cause repairs to be made in transit?

Good news. However, the smaller ones are important also not to be left out as they reflect the tremendous amount of capability the US Nave had by late war for damage repairs, not just battle repairs but normal wear and tear. There were also SP drydocks for smaller vessels, not to mention the whole slew of specialized repair ships and repair barges.

None of the repair ships or tenders in AE (or WITP) have any capacity limitation. We did not want to introduce one for floating drydocks, but would have to do just that were we to include smaller ones. And, if we put a capacity limitation in for one type of repair ship we would have to put them in for all repair ships and tenders.

That would require quite a bit of code and OOB work, and would make it more difficult for the player.

So only the larger floating drydocks are candidates for inclusion. But, what the hell, a scenario modder can put in anything that he wants.
