My scenario editor problem

Post by Dracmuller »

I have been trying to create nationalist v republican spain scenario. Tried 1936 and 1937 dates. When I play it v AI I cannot see the enemy even when adjacent (it shows a question mark) and cannot shoot. It says my units can't fire because they are 'unable' to. It says I can't move into the enemy occupied hex even with an adjacent infantry unit because I can't move into enemy occupied hex.

Updated with 1.03 or whatever the current version is.

I have sought answer in forums, no luck to date. I feel I am missing something but can't work out what. Surely this is not a bug? Can anyone help me please?

Dracmuller,

Using 1.03, I just created a small scenario with about 6 units on each side. I used Jan 1937 date in the OOB editor. I played twice (once as axis, then allied) against the computer with fow on. I had no problems seeing or shooting at the enemy nor did he have any problems shooting at me.[:D]

Usually when you get a ? mark, that means the spotting unit has no attack values, e.g. an unarmed truck spotting an enemy unit. You could have a corrupted weapon.pdx file. That could explain the problem you're having. Could you post a screenshot?

Well, I haven't yet worked out how to make proper screeshots, but here's a photo of Nat Assault Guard in 'fire' mode with Rep Popular Army in Range.

The text at bottom of screen says "Unit not capable of firing," which supports your hypothesis.

I'm not sure where to go from here...

late edit (sorry, looks like I'm not sure of the protocol for posting images here also. What a noob I feel!)

Hi Dracmuller,

I had the same problem the first time I tried to post a screenshot, so I know how you feel.[:D] This was the advice that Junk2drive gave me:

Click on Post Reply instead of typing in the box below. In the bottom of the new window is a check box for "imbed picture in post" then browse to your pic.

Have you tried playing the scenario v. AI as the opposing side? Or playing both sides manually? Have you had similar problems with units from other nations? Any info would be helpful.

Thanks for your assistance.

Here's my attempt at a picture embedding operation, (using a photo not screenshot cause I still can't do that but that don't seem quite as important at the moment):

Image

But that's not much use. Here's a wordy matrix of test results:

1 Identical scenario with 1941 British and German works normally (british won).
2 1937 Nat v Republican spain doesn't work properly at all, but varies with the mix of AI/human options.
a Manual v manual - can close combat, can't shoot ("unit not capable of firing").
Close combat, attacker ALWAYS eliminates defender
Objective hexes NEVER change ownership
b Manual v AI - Comp can close combat, human can't ("cannot move into hex containing enemy". Neither party can shoot.
- Attacker ALWAYS wins in close combat
- Objective NEVER changes ownership
c Manual v AI FOW - Same as for 'Manual v AI' with additional phenomena of AI units appearing with the big 'question mark' symbol.

FYI XP. Updated CS. Units fighting were Rep militia and Nat regulars this time around.

From everything you've described, it still sounds like a problem with your weapon.pdx file. One last way to be sure (I should've thought of it earlier) is to press the F2 key when one of the effected units is selected. This brings up the unit handbook and you can check the unit's range and attack values. If they show up as 0, then you'll know for sure.

But if you can be patient for a few more days, Jason has said that the official 1.03 patch will be released early next week. When you install that patch, it should solve your problem.

The F2 handbook screen doesn't allow me to click through to the Range Screen, so I guess you're right.

I've been waiting since the original EF to play SCW in this system, so a few more days won't hurt. Guess I'll keep hitting that 'update' button every few days...

Thankyou for your assistance.

Are you creating the scenario in EF or WF? Maybe try WF if you used EF or EF if WF.

cw58 doesn't say what he used in the battle he made but it worked for him. Try making a SCW scen in EF.
You may need to reinstall the game and the patch.

For screenshots of most games, I use the PrtScn key to copy the image, then open Paint from the Start menu.
(Start, All Programs, Accessories, Paint) Then use ctrl + v to paste the copy into Paint. Then save as... a jpeg to My Pictures.
Other free programs are Irfanview and Screenshot Pilot.

Hi junk2drive
Thanks for helping out.[:)] I made the test scenario in WF. I try to be specific but I usually leave something out.[8|] Unfortunately, there are no Spanish Republican forces in EF, so making a SCW scenario there is not possible.

Dracmuller,
When you press the F2 key, at the middle bottom of the screen is the info:
Max Range #
Vs. Hard Attack #
Vs. Soft Attack #

If the unit should be capable of firing and the values are 0, then you probably should take junk2drive's advice and reinstall & patch the game. Good luck!

CW, you're right. Values in Unit Handbook are zero. Next step will be reinstall and patch. Fingers Crossed
JD, thanks for the prt scr adv. I think from your instructions I can deduce the bit that I've never gotten when people have tried to instruct me on the art of print screen. Thanks.

Uninstalled CS. Reinstalled. When got to screen that creates the 'handle' for updates it hung up for awhile, then told me I had a download error and to contact matrix games.

Manually sought out and downloaded update 1.02.

Tried 'update' on the main game panel again.

Same error message.

I don't know what to do. And now the 'support' page in the member's section is returning error message and not sending my question through to the official support section.

And my units still have zero combat values.

This is getting very frustrating. I'm beginning to see the wisdom in my previous practice of never buying nothing online. And that is frustrating too cause i love this game so much.

Matrix is moving all files to new servers this week/weekend. Should be able to download soon.

When I buy a game, I make a CD with the installer exe and patches, then write the serial number on it.
