HOW DO YOU SUPPLY UNI0N NAVAL UNITS?

Post by XLegion »

This is very difficult to find in the rules. There are cryptic references to the fact that Union naval units (excepting transports) have to be supplied but I can't find any examples on how to do this. For example, if I had a Union Cruiser Unit off of New Orleans to be in supply would I need at least one transport unit in every ocean space leading back to say the Washington - New England district to be in supply??

In section 12.2 of the rules, paragraph 2 on "Foraging" it explicitly states that Naval units may forage. But how can I tell at a glance which Naval units NEED to forage. I also noted that when I do utilize the Forage button with Naval units that nothing appears to change. How can I determine that this is working? So simply.

1.) How do I know if my Naval Units are in supply?

2.) How do I supply them?

Still wrestling with this whole blockade question and it is rather important to get this aspect of the game right or the Union doesn't have a chance.

Naval units "foraging" makes no sense, what is that supposed to simulate ? Fishing while at sea ? [:D]

Naval and artillery units do not forage, but it is possible to use the forage button from the Action Mode toolbar to draw supplies during their movement phase. To do this, the unit must move to a region/area from which they can trace a path to the supply in the same way as it would trace during the Pre-Movement Logistics phase. In this way naval combat units and artillery units that begin out of supply may move to a location where they can draw supply (or transport fleets may be moved up to connect the units to supply).

Section 12.2 states that Naval units do not forage.

You need to keep a chain of transports adjacent to all naval units from a factory source.

Once i have the Blocade in place, 2 tansports per zone along the outside insures against the possible loss of a single ship to "storms at sea".

Rule 12.2 on page 134 first sentence reads "Naval units do not forage" BUT it goes on to say that "it is possible to use the forage button from the Action Mode Toolbar to draw supplies during the movement phase". That is a direct quote from the rules. But I'm not clear on how it works. For some naval units the button is grayed out and others it is not. Does this mean that the ones that have that button grayed out are in fact in supply?

Same way you do for land units. Little crates in the corner.
