Barge Problem

Post by LTC B »

OK, I've been able to form a TF consisting of barges from a transport TF originating at Truk. The problem I'm having is when I assign the TF to Rabaul (Barge Hub) as its destination and home port, the computer does nothing with it. It just sits in port even though bases are in need of supply. What am I doing wrong?

On page 59 of the manual it states "barge runs will move to a base up to 12 hexes away if the
destination has fuel or 6 if it does not" Rabaul is farther than 12 hexes from Truk

To get them to Rabaul, load them with fuel and send them to Kavieng and set their home port to Rabaul. They will just make it to Kavieng on the fuel that they carry (at least mine did the time I did the same thing). From Kavieng load them up again with fuel and move them on to Rabaul. At that point, put them on computer control.

If you activated the barges in Rabaul, then try disbanding the TF. When there is a need for supplies within range the computer will form a barge TF. That is, if the barges don't disappear when you disband them. Or maybe it won't. Alternatively, if you just want them to cycle between Rabaul and Lae, for example, put them under Computer control, set them to load supplies in Rabaul, and make the destination Lae, in that order.

i am still playing around with his feature. cannot barges be set like routine convoys, ie, they keep running no matter what they supply level is. The manual differentiates between computer controlled convoys and routine convoys (cs: DH). Can someone clarify? I take it from your notes it is not certain, when you disband the barge convoy, whether it will completely disappear.

I just reread page 59 again, it does not say anything about the AI
actually forming the barge convoy, are you sure that is the way it works? I also notice that barges cannot be set on routine convoys(cs: dh). Rabaul is a natural barge hex. Is not shortlands better than Truk. Truk is too far away, IIRC. (farther than 12 hexes from anywhere)

Yes you can make them a routine barge convoy...

I have one going from rabaul to gasmata now. I believe to make the barges supply any existing base within 12 hexes if it(the destination base) has fuel or 6 if it doesnt is to set the barge TF to computer control but do not give it a target base. It will then suppy bases that *need* supplies and that are in the barge hubs controlling HQ. ie: 8th army barge hub will supply 8th army bases.

The key thing to note is what the computer constitues as a need. It's something along the lines of being less than twice the needed supplies, then it will send the barge TF to supply the base.

I don't rely on the computer for this, I will only use routine barge TF's and not wait for a base to run 'low' before the computer will resupply it.

I don't use the barge hub thing, since it waits until the base gets low before it does anything, so I use the CS: option or control them myself. The barges usually only disappear if they are the first batch you activate and you immediately disband them. They show back up a few months later, either in port or in a convoy supplying some base that ran low. I think they may be trying to fix the disappearing barge and PT problem, but since they don't say, I don't know...

Thanks 1089 for the info. I agree with you, I dont want to wait till the computer decides someone is low on supply. For the Japanese, I think it is important to stock up early for the troubled times ahead!!!!!!
