Masts of a china clipper (I forget the name) that got turned into a restaurant. Nice, proper ship-rigged boat, eh Steve?

There are tons more but either GFU or I are in them. I wish I could post the pic of the Captains quarters aboard the Olympia. Lets just say the the luxury suite on the Titanic comes to mind. [X(]

Did you get into the Admirals quarters? When I worked in the Bremmerton Naval Museum, they had most of Dewey's furniture (The Olympia went into refit there just after the war , and the yard pretty much looted everything).

Thats the one!

EDIT: Heck of an impressive looking restaurant too....although I doubt that the ship originally came with 3' square glass windows in the hull.

We should get a "pictures of us" thread going.[8D]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

No, in fact there was no access to the weather deck or anything above the berthing deck. I'm not sure why. Guess its in bad shape. [:(]

I didn't bother to count the masts. Definately my bad. A ship rigged Barque.Certainly not a clipper, although her lines are similar.

Another interesting thing (mostly to our doctor friends whom we were visiting) was the Olympias sick bay and operating room. The gentleman of the couple is a surgeon and found the pre turn of the century instruments and books fascinating.

Question. Would a frigate like JAs Surprise been much smaller than that?

Somewhat. HMS Surprise was a small frigate , a 32 I belive (forgive me, it's been at least 10 years since I've read the books). Have you seen Constitution(a 44) in Boston or Constellation(a 20 gun sloop of war) in Baltimore? Length wise she'd be between the two, but in weight and displacement closer to Constellation . Before they made the movie , the ship they used used to be HMS Rose and was homeported in Conneticut.

28. Havent made it to Baltimore yet. All and all, she would have been a rather sizable ship, I take it.

EDIT: Apparently the Rose, renamed Surprise by its new owners, is tied up in San Diego now. Next time I go out to the left coast I have to make time to see it.
