RHSEBO Test 10d vs Historiker

Post by el cid again »

This test uses the same start files as 10a and 10c (but 10b is started by OSO). It differs because of a different ALLIED turn.
It involves the new sub durability system and the new ASW device system.

The night turn involved 12 submarine attacks by IJN submarines - and a single ASW attack by the Allies on a Japanese submarine.
5 sub attacks failed to do any damage, as did the single ASW attack. 3 sub attacks scored a total of 4 shell hits on 3 targets.
4 sub attacks scored a total of 6 torpedo hits on 4 targets. 4 sub attacks caused heavy damage to 4 targets. 2 sub attacks involved
warships: CL Adelaide was missed at Port Moresby and BB Arizona was hit at Lahaina.

The day turn began with 9 Ki-48s attacking Hong Kong airfields - scoring 3 hits - losing nothing.
8 Kates scored 1 port hit at Victoria Point, Burma.

65 JAAF bombers hit Kuala Lumpur, destroying 5 aircraft on the ground, and scoring 255 casualties, 1 gun lost,
12 vehicles lost and 60 other hits. 50 Ki-21s followed up, destroying 2 more aircraft on the ground, 4 casualties,
1 gun lost, and 140 other hits.

18 Ki-21s escorted by only 2 Zeros attacked Singapore. Met by 17 Buffalos, 4 of these were shot down, but 2 Sallys were lost.
1 light transport was destroyed on the ground. 7 other hits. Long air combat and AAA opposition meant almost no bombers were able
to drop bombs and accuracy was poor.

101 Bettys and Nells hit Clark AFB - accompanied by 90 Zeros and 7 recon planes - but there was no air opposition.
2 P-40s destroyed on the ground, 58 casualties, 1 gun lost, 4 vehicles lost, 258 other hits.

KB hit PH with an uncoordinated strike - 120 carrier bombers and 3 recon planes but NO fighters at all. 14 Allied fighters of 3 types
and AAA shot down 22 planes, 12 more were damaged. 114 aircraft destroyed on the ground, 11 casualties, 183 other hits.

Ni Butai (CVL force - literally "two force") hit Johnston with a better coordinated strike: 50 carrier bombers and 32 fighters plus 2 recon planes -
only 9 hits.

A ground strike in China caused 1 casualty to 50th Guerilla Regiment. Another 72 casualties and 3 guns lost to 13th Field Army.
Two others EACH caused 31 casualties to 39th Field Army. One more 22 casualties to the same unit.
Another 31 casualties and 2 guns lost to the 15th Guerilla Regiment.
Another 15 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 68th Field Army. Next 93 casualties and 3 guns lost to the same unit.
No aircraft lost.

Small Japanese naval air strikes hit AK Makassar with 5 bombs, missed the Wenchow Transport Group, put 8 bombs into DD Pillsbury and Peary at Vigan, 7 bombs into PG Wake, and 6 bombs into 2 AKs at Tacloban. One aircraft lost. None of the target TFs had air cover.

KB launched a major anti ship air strike at a heavy TF at Lahaina, putting 15 bombs and 10 torpedoes into BB Maryland and BB Tennessee.
1 Val and 6 Kates were lost. Just as in the historical attack on Force Z - the Allies had no air cover.
This was repeated, with 4 bombs and 9 torpedoes hitting BB Pennsylvania and BB West Verginia. 1 Val and 8 Kates were lost.

18 Bettys out of Palau attacked Amboina, met 1 Buffalo, and caused 14 hits - no aircraft lost.
14 Kates out of Saipan attacked Guam - but did no damage.
19 Bettys out of Maleolap caused 8 hits on Johnston Island.

3 B-17s at Jolo missed CA Kinugasa. They came back and missed an AK later.
6 B-17s at Legaspi hit BB Yamato - once. They met 1 Pete, 1 Rufe and 2 Me-109s. They came back - lost one to the same figher force -
and missed 1 AP and 1 AK.
3 Whirraways at Singora missed CLAA Yubari.
They came back with 9 Blenheims and missed 3 ships including CLAA Katori.
3 B-17s attacked a TF at Aparri - met 29 Zeros - and were all shot down.
3 B-17s attacked a TF at Naga - met 13 Zeros - and were all shot down.

The Japanese Main Body was out of position. Neither at Lahaina with the invasion force - where it belonged -
nor with KB - it was uncovered and uncovering at sea SW of Oahu. Attacked by 2 B-18s, they missed BB Fuso.

3 Hudsons missed an AP at Kendari. They put a bomb into AP Kimbu Maru at Sorong, New Guinea later.
3 Kingfishers out of Cebu missed an AP at Jolo.

All the above air strikes were in the morning turn.

The Afternoon air turn began with 6 Ki-51s out of Singora putting 2 bombs into AK Thedens in the Malacca Strait.
Next 7 Ki-51s out of Bangkok put 5 bombs into AK Coleborne in the Bay of Bengal.
Next 10 Kates and 8 Jakes put 7 x 250 kg bombs into AK Robert L Barnes in Philippine waters. These came
from San Butai (literally three force) = the CVE force (with a CVS in company). Later 15 Kates from the same
force put 3 bombs into 1 of 2 AKs attacked at Cebu.
36 Army type Kates put 5 small bombs into PG Tutulia in the East China Sea.
5 Ki-51s out of Pisanoluke Thailand put 2 bombs into AK Viterluke.
28 JAAF light bombers put 16 small bombs into PG Peteral in the East China Sea.

Next KB hit the heavy TFs at Lahaina again - putting 26 bombs and 6 torpedoes into BB Nevada and BB Oklahoma.
4 Vals and 1 Kate were lost. 19 Kates came back and put 7 torpedoes into BB Arizona at the same location - at a cost
of 3 planes lost. Note that Arizona already had a fish from a submarine in her. Then it sent 13 Kates into PH after some
ship - but 2 were lost and the rest bugged out when they met an equal number of fighters of 3 types. Then 19 Kates
went to Molokai, putting 6 torpedoes into CL Raleigh and CL Detroit. Then 22 Kates hit a TF off Lanai - attacked 5 smaller
warships - missed 3 and put 6 bombs into two DDs. 6 Vals put 7 bombs into CL St Louis at Lihue (Kauai).

3 IJN sub attacks had one miss and two score one hit each. Two IJN ASW attacks at Kuching failed to hit O-19.

The heavy TF led by BB Yamato at Legaspi met an AK and sank her - with 20 hits.

CA New Orleans and CA San Francisco - with 3 DD - attacked the Kona Invasion Force - driving it from its objective hex -
scoring 19 hits on 4 ships (one of which was scuttled later). 4 of the 5 Allied ships were hit by 12 shells and 1 torpedo,
three of these being set on fire - including New Orleans herself. But this battle was an operational victory for the Allies -
the Kona force failed to land anything at all.

Japanese naval bombardments occurred at Legaspi, Rabaul and Kuching

8 Dec 1941 (Hawaii Time) 9 Dec (Tokyo and Westpac Time)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Aparri, Legaspi, Guam and Rabaul. Only the latter had active defense: 4 shots fired but no hits.

Brunei was more actively defended by 17 shots and a minefield - but again no hits to the night landing ships.
Kuching was identical - 17 shots and mine attacks - all failed.

Night landings at Hollandia were unopposed.

2 shots were fired at DD Amagiri at Kendari, Celebes - but no hits.

A Dutch sub KXI was attacked by 2 ASW units near Singora - but not harmed.

ML Kung Wo hit a sub laid Type 88 mine at Palembang - fire and heavy damage.

2 DD attacked I-170 near Kona, AVD McFarland attacked I-173 near PH, both unsuccessfully. Later in the
night I-170 put 2 torpedoes into DD Scheley - which likely doomed her. She missed AVD Thornton.

Ro-33 missed the Dewey Dry Dock attempting to exit Manila Bay. A "ship" with zero speed, it should not
have been moved at all. I rationalize it was under tow by an abstract tug. Later Ro-34 put a torpedo
and 2 shells into AK Anshun nearby - en route from Manila Bay to the Visayas. Later still Ro-33 put
two torpedoes into the Dewey Dry Dock - which sank during the day from this attack. It is a very slow
target! So - the asset which helps ships repair is lost - and it becomes an automatic penalty for moving
what should not have been moved (because it could not move) in the first place. It could have been towed
IRL - and if it was - it would have been a large slow target too.

4 DD attacked I-26 near Molokai. No damage. Later she put a torpedo into DD Litchfield - causing fire and heavy
damage.

2 ancient DD - HMS Scout and HMS Thanet - out of Hong Kong - ran in on transports at Aparri. Met by CL Isuzu
and 6 DD - they were both sunk after 1 torpedo hit. Scout took 30 shell hits as well, Thanet only 3. This action
was followed in rapid succession by 3 more - each involving 1 PT unit (of 3 vessels per unit) - 2 of these were sunk
and the third took 33 shell hits - and surely will sink. Two actions involved 1 HMG hit on a IJN warship. This was
intended to be a decisive action: PG Isabel (famous for being commissioned as a "US Navy warship" to provoke a
war with Japan - see The Cruise of the Lanokai - she was the only one of 3 small vessels to actually sail on such
a mission - but failed to find the enemy; she also was a former Presidential yacht) ran in - took 39 hits and sank.
Then one more PT unit came in - and went down after only 9 hits. It pays to escort your invasion forces with
real warships if you can.

2 equally ancient CL - HMS Dragon and HMS Durban - ran in on Kuching. They ran into CA Nachi, CA Ashigara,
4 DD and 2 AKs still unloading there. Both took 2 torpedoes and were sunk - in addition to sharing some 13
shell hits that probably didn't matter much in the circumstances. Historiker is a surface raider type player - and
this is what he does.

PG Peteral - fleeing Shanghai - met incoming "DD" Hai Wei - a WWI vessel of no great power - but still far too much
for the small, weak and damaged Peteral. She sank after taking only 2 shell hits.

4 old 6 gun CA and 8 DD bombarded Zamboanga, causing 81 casualties, 2 guns lost and 28 other hits.

4 new cruisers - 2 10 gun CA and 2 15 gun CL - and 6 DD bombarded Rabaul, causing 101 casualties, 3 guns lost,
1 vehicle lost, and 81 other hits.

The day turn began with continuing landings at Zamboanga, Aparri, Legaspi and Rabaul.
The latter managed 21 shots fired, but no hits. Landings at Brunei were opposed by
both mines and 24 shots fired, but still no hits. Continuing landings at Guam and
Hollandia were unopposed. Kendari was ineffectively defended only by a minefield - the
coast guns now being silent.

I-153 missed a ML near Balikpapan.

Apparently yet another PT unit - this one from Hong Kong - tried to run on Aparri - but
it hit a minefield and didn't execute the attack after taking a mine hit.

Ro-29 put a shell into AK Pangor near Bleitung Island at the East end of the Java Sea.

I-173 - subject of battles the night before in the same location in which it probably sank DD Scheley -
put a torpedo into BB Oklahoma as she entered Pearl Harbor - and was unsuccessfully counterattacked
by DD Allen. Later she put another into AVD Mcfarland. We need to give this skipper a medal. Three
ships hit in one day.

I-4 - just outside the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca - tired of the torment she suffered the day before
by a Canadian ASW group - put a torpedo into SC Edmondston - and evaded attacks by two other ASW units.

I-24 missed CL Releigh near Lahaina. It appears enemy surface ships were hunting transports at the landing site
we used the day before - but no landing ships were present today.

2 ROCAF I-153 biplanes straffed Nanchang Central China - which location was invaded by 3 Field Armies yesterday.
1 was shot down by MMG fire. 4 SB-2s attacked Haiphong Harbor - were met by 19 Ki-33 (the Army version of the
Claude) - and 2 were shot down.

17 Ki-21s escorted by 36 JAAF fighters of 2 types raided Rangoon. Met by 10 Buffalos, 9 were destroyed, and 25 other
airbase related hits were scored.

52 Bettys escorted by 92 Zeros raided Manila. Met by 52 fighters of 4 types, 3 Zeros and 5 Bettys were lost (not all to fighter action).
No less than 42 fighters were shot down, 31 casualties inflicted, and 17 airbase related hits were scored.

5 JAAF attacks on Chinese ground units caused moderate casualties.

A JNAF attack on Guam by 20 Kates caused 14 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to the Guam Insular Fortress.

9 Nells made a combat ineffective ground strike on the Brunei Fortress. 18 Nells caused 23 casualties to the Kuching Fortress.

All Japanese surface TF in the Hawaiian Islands area were in a single hex West of the Big Island - covered by KB's fighters.
Several raids came in on this composite formation - we cannot be sure of the target when they failed to penetrate. First came
2 B-18s - which died. Next came 2 B-17s - only one of which died. They managed to damage 3 of the 78 Zeros on CAP.
2 more B-18s came later - and both were shot down. In a case of deja vu, 2 more did the same thing. Next 2 B-18s tried it
with 2 P-40s in company: all four went down.

6 B-17s attacked Yamato at Legaspi. Covered by 2 Petes and 1 Rufe - they were too low to engage the bombers. All the bombs missed.
They came back later, putting a bomb into AP Daaban Maru, and missing another AP. Later still 3 more missed AP Hakone Maru.

2 B-17s came in on the San Butai (CVE force) - East of the Visayas. 1 was shot down by the 26 Me-109T Mikes on CAP.

2 B-17s missed an AK near Mindinao in the Celebes Sea.

2 B-10s missed DD Asagiri at Kendari. Then 6 Hudsons put a bomb into AP Eiko Maru at the same place.

3 B-17s put 2 bombs into AO Tsrumi at Jolo. Reported on fire, I found little evidence of damage later.

3 Hudsons missed an AP North of Amboina.

8 Kingfisher floatplanes missed CLAA Ioshima near Legaspi. 2 were shot down.

9 Ki-51s out of Singora put 2 bombs into AK Bunketoe in the Malacca Strait. Late in the day 11 put
8 bombs into PG Cicala in the same area.

16 Kates (Army type) and 6 Ki-48s out of Bako put 9 bombs into the Wehchow Transport Group
in the East China Sea.

7 E13A1s out of Saipan put 5 bombs into AO Robert L Barnes.

12 Nells put 2 torpedoes into PG Oahu in the Philippine area. 3 more put a torpedo into PG Asheville
in the same hex immediately afterward. Then 12 more put 2 torpedoes into AK Parcita near Tacloban.
Then 25 Kates put 8 bombs into AP Luzon at Tagbularan.

4 Bettys put 2 bombs into AK Belus at Kuching.

8 Bettys put 2 torpedoes into CL Honolulu near Lihue Hawaii - and missed DD Ward.

15 Kates from KB put 3 torpedoes each into DD Peary and DD Pillsbury near the Big Island.
16 Vals then went into PH unescorted - met 16 fighters of 3 types - and 7 were shot down.
None penetrated.

18 Bettys raided Amboina. Met by 3 Buffalos, 2 were lost. So was 1 Buffalo. 11 casualties,
1 gun lost and 12 airbase related hits.

3 B-17s put a bomb into CA Kinugasa at Zamboanga. 1 was destroyed - by a F1M2 Pete!
Immediately afterward, 3 Hudsons repeated the feat - but none was destroyed. In spite of these
two bomb hits, Kinugasa seems fully operational.

5 Whiraways and 6 Blenheims came in on the gigantic landing force at Singora (we don't land at
Kota Baru - but instead march overland from Singora). 3 Zeros were on LRCAP. 6 Oscars
and 8 Petes were on CAP. No aircraft destroyed. No hits on ships. 1 Japanese and 3 Allied
aircraft damaged.

3 B-17s missed CL Isuzu at Aparri.

3 B-17s missed AP Sanfuku Maru at Zamboanga.

2 B-17s put a bomb into AK Johore Maru at Brunei.

3 Kingfisher seaplanes missed Akitsu Maru East of Luzon.

2 B-10s missed AP Eiko Maru at Kendari. Then 6 Hudsons missed 1 AP and 1 DD at the same place.
Then 3 Hudsons missed 1 DD also at Kendari.

3 Ki-48s out of Formosa attacked PG Genessee near San Fernando - and 2 were shot down! Good shooting for a PG.

14 Kates from the CVE force put 4 bombs into AK Ravness at Cebu. 10 more put 3 bombs into AP Ruth Alexander - but
missed an AVD - at Surigao.

6 Bettys attacked CA Portland and CA Astoria near Midway island. 2 were shot down.

17 Kates put 3 torpedoes into CA New Orleans and 2 more into CA San Francisco near Kona. 1 Kate was lost. He WAS out
surface raiding landing sites we hit the day before. Immediately after, 16 Kates and 36 Vals put 15 bombs and 5 torpedoes into USS Pennsylvania - also near Kona. There were 47 Zeros in company with nothing to do. Then 4 Bettys came in on the same force - and
missed CL Phoenix.

I-156 put a torpedo into AVD Arend at Ambon.

Ro-33 put a shell and a torpedo into AP Governor Wright at Olongapo - the mouth of Manila Bay.

I-11 missed a DMS at Townsville.

A RN PT unit came in on Aparri - took 95 hits - and sank. Another one came in - took 20 hits-
and left with heavy damage. A third came in - took 7 hits - and sank. Then the second to attack
(RN First MTB Division) which already had 20 hits was reengaged - and sunk after 8 more hits.

Repeat bombardment at Zomboanga caused 34 casualties, 1 gun lost and 26 other hits.

S-36 put a torpedo into AK Matsukawa Maru at Aparri. It was counterattacked without success.

Undefended Naga and Legaspi were captured. So was Strong Trang Cambodia. Same for Hollandia.

A follow up attack at Rabaul achieved 14:1 odds and captured it: 114 to 1306 casualties. One enemy
unit retreated down the trail of New Britain.

A follow up attack on Guam achieved 2:1 odds and captured it: 21 to 1151 casualties.

A follow up attack on Hong Kong faild to capture it: 642 to 68 casualties.

A follow up attack on Kendari failed to capture it, but casualties indicated it will fall soon:
49 casualties and 1 gun lost to 111 casualties, 6 guns lost and 4 vehicles lost.

A similar attack occurred at Brunei - with no Japanese and 10 Allied casualties.

An attack at Kavieng achieved 38:1 odds and captured it- no casualties - but the Allies withdrew in good order.

Allied ground bombardments at Kuching and Brunei were ineffective.

Lahaina fell to the first assault - 14 to 42 casualties - the Allies withdrew toward Molokai. 3:1 odds were achieved.

No sightings of Enterprise TF or Lexington TF - and Historiker's bold raiding mentality - caused concerns for the SLOC
feeding the Central Pacific. Recon and bombers put out - and convoys diverted back toward the Carolines. Follow up units
sent to land at Lahaina - covered by everything - Main Body and Kiddo Butai. Johnston covered by Ni Butai.
Air bases at Jolo and Legaspi brought up with aircraft - air support flying in out of Formosa and Indochina.
Lots of anti-naval air units put near Malaya- there being no ground attacks to support tomorrow. Similarly Tavoy brought up
as a forward air base, but air support already flew in today.

The main difficulty is the failure of Kuching, Brunei and Kendari to fall - never have all three failed to fall to a first or second assault in any game. We are unfit to attack again immediately except at Brunei.
