RE: Innovation for MBCFL
looks good
I am using SQL to pull data from the game. It is still a work in progress, and I am adding as I can. Nice page. I like it.

RE: Innovation for MBCFL
Sounds good rolln - I'm thinking about trying to start putting together a simple open way to put it up on a SQL server and pull like MADCAT does just to help out the Commish community. It's a pain.

A Smelly Morning for MBCFL and the Expansion Draft is in the books
Something stinks around MBCFL Land and it ain't good.
For a change though the stench isn't the Halifax Devils. On Saturday night the league mascots - MB's 75 lb. Airedale Terrier James AKA Jimmy John AKA Jambo Jambo AKA Jameson AKA Big J AKA Bud (Big Ugly Dog) and 30 lb. Welsh Terrier O'Reily AKA The O-Berger AKA Silent but Violent O AKA Little Sexy managed to take care of the backyard's skunk problem. Oh yes, not only did they manage to get two skunks, but they got three in one night.
So here's the question - how stupid is Skunk #3? Seriously!?!
Anyways, gradually MB and wife CB have been deskunking 2 dogs now... Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda do a pretty good job of loosening up the skunky oils and getting them back to good old dirty terrier scent. Anyone who has Terriers knows what I mean, we're not talking about dogs who enjoy a nice scent. Terriers are the earth dogs and these two are efficient and effective hunting machines out in the yard. This adds to the 20 lb. Racoon that O-Berger took out, the 15+ field mice he's gotten as well. We rent this one out for under deck duty - my heart and soul there... Jambo is the bird dog he knocks them right out of the sky with the deftness of a skilled cornerback while O'Reily pounces like a tiny vicious linebacker.
So yes - it has been stinky around here.
But we also had business to attent to: The MBCFL Expansion Draft
Newfoundland, Windsor, Saskatoon, and Thunder Bay laid the groundwork for their MBCFL franchises with a 36 round draft selecting Free Agents and players left unprotected. Windsor went first and selected Stefan Logan from the Free Agent list. Thunder Bay selected Joey Harrington who will be hoping to ressurect his career as will Chris Simms who went to the Newfoundland Knights. There weren't a lot of choices taken off of the existing rosters but some of the MBCFL's best made some additions. The defending Grey Cup champs add Peerless Price and Dwight Smith while Victoria added TJ Stancill, Justin McCareins, and Alex Stepanovich to their roster. Calgary wanted to somehow pull Jonal Saint-Dic but with him off the board settled for Chike Okeafor who has had mammoth MBFL seasons but has gone unsigned in Season 4. The Stamps also picked up Deshaun Foster and Kelvin Smith. Foster is expected to split time with Joffrey Reynolds so long as Foster doesn't receive a MBFL contract offer. The Halifax Devils sought to right their ship a bit by inking Matt D'Orazio and Garrett Wolfe while Quebec skipped on replacing Peter Warrick with a wideout and went for Dominic Rhodes instead. Winnipeg hopes to have found their Troy Westwood replacement for awhile with former Michigan Wolvering Remy Hamilton. The B.C. Lions hedged their bets on injuries by picking up Isaac Bruce at wideout. Bruce is another cap casualty from the MBFL and will be a depth pick unless someone offers him a deal. All in all it was a nice lead up to today's entry draft where the Devils will start us off. News sources say that Levi Bernard from Notre Dame will be the Halifax pick. Bernard was the Notre Dame offense in the Collegiate League of MBFL with 2,300+ yards of offense for the Fightin' Irish. Chris Brown from Virginia is expected to be the first QB selected and he may go anywhere from 2nd to 10th. The most influential player in this draft could be a kicker though. They say you can't go wrong with Wong and Charles Wong is the reason why. Wong was booming 61 yard field goals for the Hawaii Warriors in MBCFA and now he brings it to the CFL.
MBCFL is also expected to launch a fairly interesting MBCIS league as well bringing the Vanier Cup to the ranks, so look out for that as well.
All in all a lot going on in the CFL ranks over the next few weeks as we prepare for Season 3.
For those interested - we are always looking for GMs around the MBFL world so if you'd like some more info, just chat me up here or on AIM at bergkamp4birdie or email me at mb@mbsportsnet.com
MBFL brings football leagues to another level online with an NFL Simulation, a College Simulation, a Canadian Simulation, and a stable group of GMs. Not enough attention paid to the CFL on occasion but overall the GMs I have are top notch and are around and active. It's a really good group of guys - some of us have been working together in leagues since the late 90s so we're talking 10 years+ of relationships. We're always looking to enhance the leagues to give our GMs room to make things happen so if you're looking for a stable, long term league, I think you'll find that MBFL offers a lot of options. You can make it as serious as you want, or as non-serious as you'd like. We're not judging and we're not here to make more work for you. We want to give you a fun experience with as much or as little detail as you need to have a good time.
Thanks,
Mb

RE: A Smelly Morning for MBCFL and the Expansion Draft is in the books
Good luck with them Skunk Dogs..........eeeeeewwwwwwww
On the MBCFL front, I'm waiting eagerly for season 3 to finish
in the hope of bringing my Yellowknife SaberCats to the MBCFL as a new expansion
The SaberCats are in need of a league to call Home.
I tend to be a more serious type player, I compete to win, not just play around
Yep I know its all in the name of FUN but Winning is more fun than losing...[;)]
so maybe that'll generate a little more attention to the MBCFL
plus, just so you know,
I'm always around incase there was anything I could help you with
to assist you in running the league, testing programs, etc, etc. (but I aint no program writer, not in my skill set)
so the offers there should you need it, although I must admit you seem to have things well under control already.
Anyway, You know where I am.

RE: A Smelly Morning for MBCFL and the Expansion Draft is in the books
Is there going to be room for leagues other then the ones run by mbsports . lol
RE: A Smelly Morning for MBCFL and the Expansion Draft is in the books
LOL there will always be a market for a good 20-30 football leagues that run well online. That number has been pretty static over the last 10 years. You can search around and you'll find all sorts of different types, most run on Madden, some are fantasy, some are real, some on MaxFB do Canada, some do indoor, some to modified variants and all of them have a place.
What any Commish will always tend to run into is that there is a finite number of people that they know and can get in contact with who are going to participate at the level demanded of them. Some leagues are so detailed that people are posting daily updates for their team, I know that I cannot run something of that magnitude and do it well. The level of time that something of that sort takes is an invitation to have a revolving GM door. You'll get some really good ones but the majority of people have lives that require more of their attention then a simulated football league.
So what is it that I do...
I run my leagues with a fairly realistic set of parameters for the GMs to operate under. For instance our NFL sim has a cap, cap penalties for trades, 2 4 round drafts a year. It's entirely based on real life players. The NCAA we loosen it a bit, we have a draft for real life players and then recruiting for the fantasy players. Again, fairly normal stuff, you set your offense/defense can setup the lineup if you'd like, but if someone is ultra busy, it's not a huge deal we'll let the cpu handle the day to day operations. CFL is again pretty straightforward, we allow CFL and fantasy players after they graduate from the NCAA league. CIS I want to do fairly similar, you have players come in, play, and go out in a 4 season span and that's it. They're all going to be fantasy players, if I can find guys who want to participate, great, if not I want to make it so that there is a reasonable chance for the cpu to build a team on it's own throughout the years and then those CIS players will move into the CFL league as well as some of the choice guys from the NCAA league.
In the end though I tend to run my leagues for my enjoyment, if I were to do it on someone elses terms or with a rule set that I didn't develop and put together I don't think I would be able to bring a lot of vigor to it.
With what I do today I get to work with a lot of different data, I get to hone my skills on some outside of work stuff, I get to enjoy it a lot of the time. It's a grind at times, but that's why I try to run it on a schedule that works. IE We will sim games at the backend of the week and weekend only. Monday thru Wednesday are my days to myself and for development. Thursday-Sunday all games get simmed, usually the update comes on Sunday afternoon and I do live games with updates throughout the other days. The keys to all of this are having multiple computers so that a lot of things can be going on at once and just being relaxed about it.
Any commish who is demanding a level of activity from his GMs is going to end up disappointed. The best you can really do is get a nice core group together and then work with them to build the league. You'll have good guys in, bad guys in, and guys who want more then you can deliver. Those are the toughest ones because 90% of the time the things they want are totally legitimate, but time, resources, or ability just doesn't allow it.
After this collection of paragraphs I've come to the conclusion I'm way too passionate about this, but really this is my hobby and after 10 years of honing the craft of running leagues I like to imagine that I do an alright job. I'm nowhere near perfect in what I do and there are guys out there that can run circles around me or have more time to devote to it. I just like to have something going on that I enjoy and can spend time on and socialize a bit with. MBFL, MBCFL, and MBCFA do that for me. MBCIS is a natural addition just as MBAFL will most likely become one in the future.
I should note that nothing would make me happier then a few guys from here hopping into the CFL over the next few seasons but again, it's on the terms that we keep it realistic and that means you're not going to move the Argonauts to Berlin or have the B.C. Lions become the Baracudas. Now if you want the Kitchener Admirals or the new team in New Brunswick or something like that, then we talk about it and see if it's a fit.
I mean we have a few GMs that pay no attention to the CFL league, which is a shame but I believe we'll always be able to find a spot for someone who wants to participate on their terms at a level that fits in with what we offer. My commitment is that I'll continue to do the best I can and continue to post games regularly at least until we have some kids around here and that looks like a 3-5 year deal at this time meaning 6-10 seasons at least. As long as the software keeps functioning, we'll be around.

Reading between the lines............does that mean no Yellowknife ??????
cos that would be a shame
RE: A Smelly Morning for MBCFL and the Expansion Draft is in the books
It doesn't necessarily mean that - it just means we need to do some other work as well.
It is on my radar and I'm working on a way to make it happen... just sayin' a 20,000 pop city would have a hard time supporting any sports team, but we're looking for how this could work.

Yer I understand its a small place actually closer to 18,000 than 20,000
and that has problems if it where reality
But seen as its all make believe anyway
cant we just pretend I'm a multi-billionare and funding Yellowknife out of my own pocket..........[:D][:D][:D]
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha...................only kidding around man
I totally understand what your saying, I'll be waiting on the league decission.

Yelloknife Expansion!?!?
The other question is what division do they end up in?
Calgary - Edmonton - Victoria and Vancouver obviously but that's a heck of a road trip up north.
So we'll figure it out we need some more GMs though for Season 4....

Well yes,
being in the Northwest territories,
Yellowknife would have to be in the West Division
and it's a fair way to the other places in the league, especially on a sled with dogs pullin' ya' [;)]

Yellowknife, Moncton, etc. etc.
Yeah Yellowknife is a tricky topic I think our overall goal would be to keep those city sizes fairly decent, IE you would think 80,000 might be able to support a team with 15k or so attending if you include having some support from outside of the city area.
Yellowknife and Whitehorse are both on my list as special circumstances along with one other place - PEI.
Obviously anytime someone wants their city in, I have to consider it, but for instance if someone said Kawartha Lakes, ON with about 75,000 people I'm not very big on putting yet another team into that portion of Ontario. Anyways here's what I have written down as potential future teams and since I like to work in even numbers I wrote 12 down
1. Yellowknife Sabercats - Mykal's team, I guess we'd chalk it up to the Diamond Mines bringing in a couple billion dollars a year. With only 18-20,000 people in the immediate area this would be in the Yellowknife stadium that has been build but yikes - probably 4,000-5,000 a game
2. London, ON - 450,000 population and the team name I'm thinking off comes from an old Grey Cup champion
London Imperials - Sarnia is just too close to Windsor to get it's own team - it's a 90 minute drive depending on how the tolls are
3. Sherbrooke Castors - AKA Beavers. About 187,000 pop and it works here as a team in the southern part of quebec
4. Kingston Admirals - Decent sized city in Ontario that has no team, is at least a hike from Toronto and has a tradition by itself. team name - Admirals
5. Sudbury Spartans
6. Sault Ste. Marie Lakers
7. Moncton
8. Whitehorse Orcas - BTW I think this may be the best of the custom uniforms you've done to date.
9. Prince Edward Islanders
10. Cape Breton
11. Anchorage - yes I know I know, but it's almost the only way to eventually put Whitehorse and Yellowknife into a division that makes sense along with
12. Prince George
If we ever got that far we'd have 28 teams... probably more then we'll ever see though.

can't take the credit for that one, think that is one I borrowed from "Redwolf"
I made a few small modifications to it but thats all, I also liked it alot
mainly for the "Indian Style" orca...........very kewl.
Offseason Update for MBCFL
A couple of off-season notes from MBCFL
Kevin Jones had been taken by the Saskatoon Thunderbirds in the expansion draft - Jones has accepted an offer with the MBFL Cincinnati Bengals and will not be playing in the MBCFL for at least a couple seasons.
Saskatoon inked Warrick Dunn to replace him on the team while they practice in the off-season but in speaking to their GM there are some changes expected, especially at QB. Joseph Ornelas who was a top running back at Iowa in MBFA will likely be their starting RB, but they're not enamored with Orlovsky, McCown, and Gesser - there may be a move coming in the next few days from Toon'
Halifax is Improving
Halifax is happy with their new back, Notre Dame stud Levi Bernard and new quarterback Matt D'Orazio. They should help to turn around the MBCFL's worst franchise after a horrific 1-16-1 season.
Bishop Gets the Gig in Toronto
Michael Bishop was named the starting QB in Toronto - not a big shock because they couldn't get Chris Brown or Gary Novak in the draft but they'll but their hopes on Bishop's arm
MB Re-tools the playbook
I've been making some updates to the playbook to establish a little more realistic simulation play throughout the league. So far the initial returns are just exciting

MBCFL Season 3 Kicking Off This Week
Well after a nice little 2 month break that included the first MBCFL Entry Draft, an Expansion Draft with 4 teams coming in, and quite a bit of roster tweaking it is time to get the CFL league back up and running. Season 3 will start tomorrow for MBCFL with a few games spread throughout the week. I'm downright giddy about getting things going for this season as the new 16 team format takes hold. It will be interesting to see how the teams that chose to select American players do compared to the heavily Canadian sides.
Saskatoon made a bunch of changes prior to the start of the season to get their roster how they want it and some of the other teams have been making changes as time goes by. With the launch of the CIS league we have a nice new way to bring in new players so eventually I will probably have to include some sort of injuries in the league, although I don't particularly like the Max FB injury engine.
Finally we've been thinking about the future expansion and I have about 3 teams lined up at this time. We're always looking for guys who want to run CFL teams, some of our owners are very focused on the NFL league and so their CFL team gets neglected a bit. Not that they're not doing some things to keep up but it isn't a primary focus.
For expansion Mykal's SaberCats would be on the list. Yellowknife is a smaller town for a team however if they can support the team, they should be alright as an addition. One of the key considerations that we have is keeping the divisions somewhat balanced and that means that Yellowknife will get assigned to the Pacific when they come in. Our next huge challenge was what to do in the Prarie b/c we just don't have a lot of population left after Saskatoon and Thunder Bay come into the mix. The solution is actually going further East, which isn't ideal but it does work. The Sudbury Spartans will be the 2nd team in the next round of expansion. A little searching will turn up their rich history and recent struggles, but the Blue, White, and Silver will carry forward. Moving into the Great Lakes we look to historic teams again and we see London entering and picking up a name from the past. The London Imperials are team #3. The Sarnia Imperials actually won a couple Grey Cups about 60-70 years ago so there is some history to the name there. I haven't given a ton of thought to their uniforms yet but it will likely be something interesting. The final group would be in the Atlantic Division and would go to either New Brunswick or PEI. The GM for that team is trying to decide on his options there.
An alternative plan is in place as well that would stick Yellowknife into the Prarie, Sudbury and London into the Lakes, move Ottawa to the Atlantic and open up a Pacific slot for a team in Anchorage, AK

RE: MBCFL Season 3 Kicking Off This Week
Sounds good to me,
the Yellowknife franchise has been waiting and searching for a good while now to find a league to call home
the Whole town of Yellowknife is a Buzz with anticipation............well I am anyway [:D]
I'll be watching closely this season to see how things unfold in the MBCFL

MBCFL Season 3 Officially Underway
MBCFL has officially kicked off our 3rd season. It was a nice week for some teams, not so nice for others. Saskatoon got a nice welcome to the league from Montreal in the form of a 41-23 drubbing. Windsor got similar treatment from the Tiger-Cats 40-10 while Newfoundland and Thunder Bay played against each other so they saved us from seeing all 4 expansion teams get rocked. The Knights downed the Griffins 21-14. Renaldo Hill did get Defensive POTW honors though for Thunder Bay. Avon Cobourne ran for 3 scores and took offensive POTW. Calgary came from down 26-18 to win 35-26 over the Quebec Bulldogs while the Argos came up just short at home to the Lions 22-19. Winnipeg came out in front of last year's western champs the Victoria Silvertips with a 34-26 win and finally the Edmonton Eskimos took a 27-26 win over the Roughriders to round out the week.
Website is updated with leaders, stats, career leaders all that nonsense running behind the scenes on php.
Aside from putting screens up I finished the update for the week in a fairly time efficient manner. I re-wrote some of my macros so that they filter in properly and we have the upload restricted to 9 SQL Queries for
Schedule, Passing, Rushing, Receiving, Defense, KR, PR, K, and P
Please note I found a few nonsensical errors out there in the player cards<Kicking stats are under a Blocking header> but things look pretty solid so far. I'm pleased.

MBFL - Total Overview
Well someone finally poked the hornet's nest and asked me what exactly do I do for my leagues... and I thought about it for a second and I came to the realization that most of it is just jumbled up in my head and even I don't get all the details right. So I figured I'd post a little overview of each one of the leagues and just provide some background on how they run.
MBFL - MBFL is our first league and longest running league. It's based on the NFL and utilizes the 32 NFL teams only. It strongly ties in to what occurs in real life.
League: MBFL
Simulation Used: Madden 07' with mods
Rule Set: Standard NFL Rules Package
Duration of League: Season 4 Super Bowl is next Sunday
Financial System: Integrated Salary Cap structure with Free Agency and Cap Penalties
Draft: 2x 4 Round Drafts a Year
Seasons: 2x Seasons per 12 Month period
Trade Rules: Must receive approval from 2 other GMs
Re-Rates: Handled by Madden during the season with off-season re-rates based on NFL Performance
Retirements: Players are aged 1 year for every 2 seasons and retirements are done as players retire from the NFL
Player Type: All Players are real NFL players only
Website Type: Produced Utilizing MadCat and some other personal touches to give some more detail to team records and career leaders
League Overview: Very competitve with occasional shouting matches and some real emotional attachment. Some GMs have been in this league for a few years in this run. I ran MBFL before for 4 years as well and we have about 10 guys who have been in since day 1.
MBCFA-
League: MBCFA
Simulation Used: Bowl Bound College Football with Extensive Mods
Rule Set: NCAA Rules Package - 2 Divisions now the Bowl Subdivision and the Championship Subdivision. The Bowl Subdivision includes a National Title game following the Bowls. If necessary a 1 v. 4/2 v. 3 playoff will be held - so far in two seasons we have not had the need for the extra round 1 v. 2 has been perfect.
Duration of League: Season 2 Championships to be determined this week
Draft: Players come in thru multiple methods. Non-Real players are brought in thru a recruiting session which is similar to how the NCAA series handles recruiting where you can determine values of how hard you want to pursue a player. Real life players are brought in via a draft where teams have between 3 and 5 picks after the recruiting. The draft order is set by a series of calculations based upon the team's performance. Only human controlled teams are in the draft.
Team Ownership: Each GM controls 3 teams due to the size<118 total teams yikes> and difficulty in trying to find and manage that size of a group. 2 of the teams can come from BCS conferences while one must come from a smaller conference IE the MAC.
Seasons: 2x Seasons per 12 Month period
Trade Rules: No Trades
Re-Rates: All Internal. Players are brought in with an initial rating and a potential rating, but this is determined by the player's performance and how the team chooses to use him.
Retirements: Eligiblity is for 4 seasons, however you are able to choose players to redshirt to gain an additional year of eligiblity
League Overview: Less involved then MBFL because you can't trade and there are some limitations to what can be done during the season. Bowl Bound builds most of the files so aside from the news I don't have too much to do. I use NCAA on my handy PS2 in order to get screenshots. Just brought in the FCS within the last few days so that is a little bit new to me, but enjoyable.
MBCFL
League: MBCFL
Simulation Used: Maximum Football with a ton of work done to it
Rule Set: CFL Based Rules - IE short clock, 110 yard field, 12 men
Duration of League: Season 3 kicked off last week
Financial System: None
Draft: 2x 3 Round Drafts a Year: Players from the draft come from a few sources. CFL players not currently on a roster are brought in, as well as graduates from MBCFA and MBCIS.
Seasons: 2x Seasons per 12 Month period
Trade Rules: General Approval from MB - anything not insane will be approved
Re-Rates: Handled by the sim and by MB. For real players if they've undergone a major change in their playing level then we try to follow that. Non-real players we let MaxFB make the decisions
Retirements: Players are aged 1 year for every season and retirements are done thru MaxFb albeit with some strong mods to lengthen careers a bit. You still won't see 47 year old linebackers, but you're less likely to see 26 year old stud retirements
Player Type: Mix of CFL, Arena Football, NFL and Non-Real Players. We allow Free Agents from MBFL to be signed in the CFL. A few players have landed there for the time being including Isaac Bruce, Chris Simms, and TJ Duckett.
Website Type: Produced Utilizing MadCat which was developed for Madden. Have done an extensive amount of modding to get this to function. I really like the views it provides though.
League Overview: Starting to pick up in interest among GMs. We have 16 teams now which is exciting and we are looking to add a few more after Season 3 wraps up. Overall this started off as my "for fun" league and while some guys don't take it as seriously as I would like, I have a lot of fun running this one.
MBCIS
League: MBCIS
Simulation Used: Maximum Football with a ton of work done to it - Utilizes Mykals fantastic CIS mods
Rule Set: CIS Based Rules - IE short clock, 110 yard field, 12 men, k/o spot modified
Duration of League: Season 1 kicks off in the next few weeks
Draft: Custom built recruiting matrix by mb to give players some features such as academic, prestige, and location concerns
Seasons: 2x Seasons per 12 Month period
Trade Rules: Nada folks
Re-Rates: Handled by the sim and by MB. For real players if they've undergone a major change in their playing level then we try to follow that. Non-real players we let MaxFB make the decisions
Retirements: Players are aged 1 year for every season and have 5 seasons of eligiblity. Upon graduation the top players will become eligible for the MBCFL draft
Website Type: Produced Utilizing MadCat again but modded for MaxFB Use
League Overview: This one is mostly just for me, but with the "just for me" leagues I like to kick them open so other people can get some fun out of them as well. Mykal, Reaser, Olsan, and Koz have signed on to grab teams so we at least have some human interaction and rivalry. The first season kicks off soon, I'm working on establishing a firm date - I want to get the US college leagues wrapped up first and the Super Bowl.
Typically I try to run MBFL & MBCFA from April/May thru September as a season and then from Mid October thru Late March as a season. MBCIS and MBCFL run as almost exact opposites so that I don't get burned out by having everything going at once.
Plans for additional leagues
Arena - I've thought about it, but the rule set for MaxFB isn't Arena football and I struggle with some of the playbook planning for it. I'm looking at it long term but without a realistic set of rules I may pass for now
Developmental - We've been looking into MBFL-Europa a little bit more over the past few months. One of the reasons for looking at it happens today in particular, cut day. One thing that Madden doesn't let us do is have practice team rosters. The idea behind MBFL-Europa would be to have 8 teams. Each team would receive practice squad players from 4 teams giving a chance for some of those guys that just get cut in the MBFL. The eventual format could be like NFL-Europa, the AAFL, or the UFL. I have thought about it but haven't worked out the details. I know there's an absolutely scrumptious new set of NFL-Europa uniforms out there that I'm dying to find a use for.
Other Work - Currently I'm also working on an International Football Name Generator. This will be integrated in with a few different creations so that what you'll do is assign nationalities and then the darned thing will spit out names, sizes, ratings, and positions for ya. Part of this is pulling off of the CIS player creator that I've put together but a good portion of it is brand spankin' new. Trust me you haven't had fun until you research the most popular names of Samoa, China, and Japan. BTW - Everyone in China has the same 9 names - meaning the randomization for familial names for China needs to be handled in a much different fashion then Sweden. I also need to look into character handling in MaxFB as umlauts and accents are more used in other languages then in good old fashioned rule bending english.
Anyways, if you're at all interested in any of the leagues we run, just hunt me down via pm here, email at mb@mbsportsnet.com or via AIM at bergkamp4birdie.
Thanks,
Mb
