Potapov Strikes Malin-Korosten area AAR

[Gary Tatro]

“Coloniel Vebber, this is Captain Meyer over on the far east road. Sir we have just recovered from being overrun by a platoon of BT-2m33’s and a pair of T-28m34’s. We managed to take out one of the Bt-2’s but the Ivans have control of the road. Will report again when I get a chance.”
Hmm thought Vebber I had been wondering why I had not heard from them in such a long time. It seems that by taking the far east road those men pulled six tanks off of Wirth and the Stugs in the town. “Captain I am sending some more support your way. I hope it will help, Vebber out.”

“Coloniel we were able to concentrate on the advancing infantry. Between the Stugs and my men we eliminated five squads of So Mot Infantry! We only lost a machine gun squad in the process but we should be able to take high road soon.”
“What can I say Wirth, you are one of the BEST among us,” congratulated Vebber. “We located and eliminated another two Cossack cavalry squads.”
“Any luck with spotting that artillery Coloniel? It devastated us again over the last few minutes,” said Wirth in a shaky voice.
Hold strong Wirth your experience is the only thing that got us this far. You have to be strong thought Vebber. “I am sorry Wirth we are unable to locate it, the Ivans must be calling it in from a long was away.”

“Coloniel Vebber come in, this is Captain Meyer.”
“Yes Captain, go ahead.”
“Coloniel with the help of a second ATG we have been able to knock out another two Bt-2m33, but we lost our recon. Also Coloniel I do not think we will be able to retake the road before the Ivans reinforce.”
“Well give it your best Meyer, your doing great up there by yourselves. If things start to get ugly pull back into the trees, Vebber out.”Wirth report!”
“Hauptmann, we have taken the high road above the town of Malin and are running out of targets, we are sending a couple of the Stugs South to help out Captain Meyer.”

“Coloniel we have cleaned out the last of the resistance up here, four more squads of So Mot infantry either surrendered or are now feeding the grass,” reported Wirth.
“Wirth can you send anymore help down to Captain Meyer, He was able to take out a T-28m34 and two tank crews but he needs more support. We jumped a couple of Zig-5’s that had not left the area and dealt with them appropriately.”

“Coloniel I will see what I can do but my men are pretty beaten up most squads are down to 50% and two squads are completely gone.”

Epilogue

“Coloniel, the records show that you and your command group got six kills today,” congratulated Wirth.
“Yes Wirth we did,” replied Vebber sadly.
“What is it Hauptmann,” asked Wirth.
“Well Wirth it was just that we were needed, everyone was needed, and if everyone had not performed so well then all would have been lost,” said Vebber quietly.
“But Coloniel, we won, with your great leadership we won,” exclaimed Wirth.
Vebber looked at his 1st Lt and saw that Wirth just did not understand. Yes the day had been won but at what cost. Out of his Company and Kampfgruppe he had lost 30% of his men and when he requests experienced replacements what does he get. Boys, men that are just old enough to start shaving. Vebber shook his head. Yes we are winning but at what cost?

My hat is off to you Gary, like your AAR, and can't believe ANYONE could achieve a MV from this scenario.

I split my forces and took my kampfgruppe on the southern road. The Kossacks annhililated the squads on the northern route. I was very conservative, admittedly, I allowed the armor to move almost unmolested through Malin. Their main thrust was to the south and then west between the main roads.

I set up ambush points with inf., and an AT gun on the hilltop near the center of the map. I positioned my 2 7.5cm and the other 3.7 AT gun on the raised road to the south. I also positioned my Stug's for any opportunity shots that might come about. My infantry was dispersed in a wide band through the scrub north of this roadway, stretching the the southern end of the dam(?). I had 2 platoons of infantry capture the vh on the extreme right of the Kossacks, but ran out of time.

I was able to destroy the majority of armor with nary a scratch, but my lack of aggressiveness cost me, I only had a draw.

This is wonderful, gary. You have done an excellent job in writing up the balttle. This battle is one of my personal favorites and it kept me busy for hours working on it. You have a future in writing AASR's. Now if only the other players would respond after reading this great work of yours.

I just LOVE your AARs! I've only played this scen once and if memories served me right I managed a DV, but with hight losses, including both Stugs inside Malin I remember the later 282 reinforcements not being very helpful as they marched very slowly to the front. I even sent some trucks back to haul them but with all the roads beat up into moonscape by the artilleries they just didn't arrive in time to do much good. Lost almost the whole company initially marching on the high road, but with the help of the D platoon managed to finally kill off every last one of those darn cossacks! the other 2 inf platoons get suppressed repeatedly inside malin by the 122/152mm. Also lost some AA/AT guns inside there which was a mistake. They didn't do much good as soon as the shells dropped. In hindsight should have set all the guns outside of Malin. Even if they don't have any targets to shoot as least they'll survive. All in all one of the most intense battles of the MC. Great job Brent, Matrix, and Gary!
