This new stand alone release based on the legendary War in the Pacific from 2 by 3 Games adds significant improvements and changes to enhance game play, improve realism, and increase historical accuracy. With dozens of new features, new art, and engine improvements, War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition brings you the most realistic and immersive WWII Pacific Theater wargame ever!
Please - how stupid do you think I am? Of course I know that only actual attacks may yield hits. My remark was meant ironic! Even rookie pilots should realize that they are flying ASW not just for sightseeing but to attack any subs they have spotted - the rookies would just not be successful most of the time due to their lack of exp. So IMO there should be some 'bomber xy spots and attacks sub but misses' messages to give it the 'right feel'. Of course this is purely eye candy (and psychology). And just to make it clear - I am not asking for more efficient Japanese ASW, I am just against reducing Japanese ASW lethality even more, because the perceived lethality seems to be the result of bad player choices rather than alleged unbalanced game mechanics.
Never intended to think you would be stupid... [&:] You are right about the right feel, but that´s not what the game gives you here. I guess, it would be normal to attack a sub EVERY time (at least most of the time) you spot one, but that is not what happens in the game.
All I´m trying to say is that if you use 80+ exp Helens/Sallies en masse in choke points, better say in points where you have spotted a couple of subs, those subs will get sunk within a couple of days. Or at least damaged, which mostly puts them out of the war for 2 months+. Like always, everything comes down to the players. You can use 500 80+ exp Helens on ASW or naval search and get decent results (both in the feeling of gamey or not and the feeling about realism) - as long as you have spread them out over the map. As soon as you use those 300-500 bombers within 10 hexes, you are far away from the "not gamey and realistic" feeling - I am, others aren´t.
Does Allied ASW capability turn into Superman in 1944? Over the weekend, I had a transport TF and a CV TF find Japanese subs, and hit both of them with about 8 depth charges each. The transport TF was escorted by SC's with daytime experience in the 50's, but the CVTF had 10 DD's with daytime experience over 60 each. Oh, and both subs were undetected by air search until the TF's ran over them.
Playing stock 1.8, I think actual ASW TFs are about right for the Japanese. I have ASW TFs with 15-20 ships attacking Allied subs and often not getting more than a few small hits that don't heavily damage the subs.
Air search is another matter. Redirecting your Helens and Sallies to ASW is a bit of a killer. It will be somewhat less so in AE, but still after a couple months of being diverted from bombing the search and naval bombing ratings of the AE Helen and Sally squadrons will be pretty high.

That is most likely because Allies made big leaps in ASW tactics and technology in 1943 and 1944. In sense of Battle of Atlantic, they were "supermen" in 1944, U-boat spotted by "hunter-killer" ASW group did have very small chance to escape.

I'm aware of the various upgrades and breakthroughs the Allies made in ASW during WWII, but these were Australian SC's, with daytime experience of <60, and yet they hammered that poor sub with 8 depth charge hits. The USN DD's that hit the other one made more sense, but even they had experience <70.
Since AE will allow experience to be nurtured over several different capabilities, maybe the majority of pilots will not be able to develop their ASW capabilities to such a high degree, (unless they neglect other areas)??????
Maybe everybody will start with an ASW capability of 30 (or so), except for forces with some experience in that area already?
In my PBEM's allied submarine warfare has gone pretty much the way AdmSpruance and castor troy has described.
I can hardly say my submarines have sunk 60-80% of enemy merchant fleet. No, I would say that I have been lucky to even sink 5% of the enemy cargo ships. (The actual number is propably even much lower than that) .
As said Japanese bombers can hit a lot of subs. Maybe not sunk them but damage badly so they are spending a lot of time on yards repairing.
Japanese PC's are also deadly on ASW.
...I really do hope they make subs much more deadlier since they actually were causing a havoc. At the moment I have found the submarine fleet "useless".
Excellent link! It's remarkable how few US subs were lost in the first year of the war. And of those 8, only 3 were due to enemy action while on patrol.
It has been pointed out that any competent Japanese player is going to use his aircraft extensively for asw patrol and will form convoys that are well protected by escorts.
So long as their ASW exp is set to the correct historical low values, say, 2-3%, and as long as wear and tear on engines and fuel consumption are set to the correct historical values, everything should be OK. I have no problem with the Japanese player trying to gin up a capability that the Japanese never had so long as the costs generally greatly outweigh the added success.
Show me a fellow who rejects statistical analysis a priori and I'll show you a fellow who has no knowledge of statistics.

They might have had good TF commander. TF commander Naval Skill is taken into account on top of other things. Watching combat animations often give good idea why things happened the way they did (myself, I am usually too impatient and thus animations are off).
It seems you were bit unlucky not to meet the ASW TF at night, when Japanese have advantage for a while, even despite radar. As with Allied ASW TF, anything above 60 Exp spells trouble to IJN subs, who were not that good in evasion.
To rephrase the words, after Jan 1943, you will have to be careful how to use IJN submarines. Nothing ahistorical in that.
Don't worry, you will still sink ships big time if IJN sun doctrine is off, but when encountering either/both Air/Sea ASW opposition, IJN subs are always in grave danger.

Just to prove a point I put a couple hundred IJA and IJN bombers on naval search and ASW to see what would happen:

And with a few hundred aircraft out looking for them I would expect that....[8|]
AE won't necessarily prevent that, except in that your pilots will have different skill sets...aircraft require more maintenance ... and ops losses for them may end up higher.

Newcastle expands airfield to size 3
Here is 4 ASW AC hits in one turn. Look at how many times each sub is spotted....sigh.....
Sir...each of us has too much to contribute, to allow one other person to "prevent us from posting".
I especially respect your contributions.
You do know what the green button at the bottom of another posters comments is for, right?
I could be wrong, but the commitment of 500 aircraft to ASW operations in the Dutch East Indies seems to be more in number then the allies committed to the North Atlantic in 1943, when tide turned in the Battle of the Atlantic and this is a significantly smaller area then the North Atlantic. And with the current serach system one should expect significant non-historic results.
In AE I hope with ASW training vs Bombing training the Jappan should not have the large number of aircraft to assign to this task, unless they choose to have less bombers.
Here is the operations report from the last turn of my game as the Allies against sjohnson. To reduce the lethality of Japanese ASW AC and naval search AC, sjonson agreed to fly his AC at 6000 feet or higher and he reduced the number of army bombers on ASW. Still the Helens score 3 hits in one turn....2 on SS Cabrillo and she sinks immediately.

Im not sure in SS Sawfish will make it back to port with 51% system and 70% flotation damage.
There is a huge problem in determining what should be the correct outcomes.
A. Clearly, any IJN commander with half a brain should be doing the obvious ASW measures.
B. This, in turn, lowers the effectiveness/raises the cost of sub strangulation.
The problem is by how much.....It is doubtful that Japan (even with 500 planes a day), could get multiple hits
on a daily basis (the allied planes in greenland had radar to help spot the subs...and allied subs with anti-plane radar should be able to dive away...so they would not be even spotted).
That said, clearly historical losses (to allied subs) would furnish the lower end of possiblity.
Of course, it is rather obvious, that even with a clue, IJN ASW would not have matched the 1944 smothering of U-Boats...
To quote from Evans/Peattie`s {Kaigun}
"Mistakes in operations and tactics can be corrected, but
political and strategic mistakes live forever". The authors were refering to Japan but the same could be said of the US misadventure in Iraq
