MLB Baseball Timeline

Post by CrashDavis »

After about two years of refining and collecting info, I've put together a timeline of baseball changes (Names, Stadiums, Alignments, Team Moves, etc) from approx 1903 to present. It is an Excel spreadsheet format that I believe is compatible with Excel versions 2002+.

Would much appreciate any feedback or more info anyone may have to add....

Now includes info for ballparks I used during my experiment with the deadball era (see other post).

You can download the spreadsheet from the link in the first message in this topic.

Excellent. What method and sources did you use to come up with the ballpark data?

Those are modified parks that I used for simming the deadball era. The baseline info came from link from Baseball Reference site. Then they were modified for the deadball era.

Strong work, Crash. I am impressed! [&o] However, I did not notice anything about the Cardinals' new ball park in St. Louis. Am I overlooking it?

Ooops, missed Busch Stadium III. Thank you for catching that. I will update the Timeline soon.

I understand that you modified park dimensions to try to force the stats to be more in line with what they were historically, but I prefer to keep the parks as authentic as the game will allow, even if it means slightly skewed stats (I will worry about that after the fact, maybe even eventually fudging the parks if it bothers me too much). What I'd like to understand is how you would use the existing data to put it into Puresim terms. For example, let's look at South End Grounds in Boston. According to Wikipedia (I couldn't find any data for this field at Baseball Reference), South End Grounds III had the following dimensions:

Left Field - 250 ft
Left-Center - 445 ft
Deep Left-Center - 450 ft
Center Field - 440 ft
Right-Center - 440 ft
Right Field - 255 ft

How would you use those figures to fill in all of the fields for Puresim, where you have a total of 9 fields to complete? Which goes where? I'm fine with interpolating missing data, but should, for example Center Field be CF2, and would Left Field be LF1, etc.?

Based on this data, I'm using the following for South End Grounds:

LF1 250'/6'
LF2 350'/6'
LF3 445'/6'
CF1 450'/6'
CF2 440'/6'
CF3 440'/6'
RF1 440'/20'
RF2 350'/20'
RF3 255'/20'

vs. what you have:

LF1 350'/40'
LF2 445'/40'
LF3 450'/6'
CF1 440'/6'
CF2 440'/6'
CF3 440'/6'
RF1 440'/40'
RF2 440'/40'
RF3 350'/40'

Any guidance?

Really a matter of personal preference. But, for South End Grounds I decided to drop the two short 255' lines while trying to keep everything else relatively close as possible. I chose to keep the "Deepest Part of Left-Center" dimension in the LF3 box...although CF1 would work too. And CF2 I would use as straight-away CF dimension.

However, PureSim it seems will only allow a maximum distance of 475' when editing a ballpark. One workaround when you need a distance over 475': choose one of the "already-made" parks in PureSim that has the distance you're looking for and edit all the other distances (except of course for the one that is beyond 475').
