It is an excellent game, but very short on graphics.  Major H gives first rate support. It's been a few years since I played since I do like a little more flash than TacOps offers.  The manual is extensive and has very good tutorials if memory serves me correctly.  It is a turn based simulation with a WEGO resolution phase.  The AI is very good, or I'm just very bad, which translates into the latter.  Also the game plays at a funny graphics resolution.  I don't remember exactly but I believe you can't size it to full screen.  I hope that helps a little.

It is a great game.  What sabre1 said above.  It is dated as far as the graphics go.  But it is simple to learn and lots of fun to play.  It really gives you the feel of the devastating firepower of modern weaponry.  Major H has also worked a lot of WWII weaponry into the OOB, although it is not in any of the scenarios.  I have kept it on my hard drive longer than any other game I own and still play it.

I think I first saw TacOps back in 1996 and have played it off and on ever since.  Despite the dated graphics, it provides a VERY good simulation of modern tactical combat.  Where it shines is that it has an excellent OOB for Soviet/Warsaw Pact OPFOR, and the AI simulates the OPFOR doctrinal deployment very well.  This is all terribly obsolete now but for someone like me who was deployed in Germany in the late 1980's and understands all that doctrine and tactics, it is very well done.  Newbies jumping into NATO Task Force operations versus Warsaw Pact regiments will find a steep learning curve; however, military manuals are included with the game for those willing to do some homework.

I first purchased TacOps (3, I think?) about 6-7 years ago, and I still play it on occasion. It really is an amazing game.

I tried playing TacOps 3.0 (it was placed on Underdogs with a permission of it's creator), but found it too complex to play without RTFM.

I considered buying 4.0, but I've read on Battlefront site that they are using internet activation, which put me off.

There is a demo for 4 and there is no activation. Browse through that forum and you will see a Major H statement on that.

Does the full version allow to choose sides in single player?

I think so.

Since it's not a Matrix game, you should ask any questions over there.

Major H has been working on V5, and has stated on the mailing lists that he is trying to get a civilian version of V5 out the door this year.

Do try the demo:  it includes both the training scenario and Gallagher 6, which should provide a very fair taste of the full game -- other than the limited scenario selection, it isn't a crippled version as far as I know.

I'm a big fan of TacOps:  it strikes a very good balance, using abstraction to control micromanagement while retaining fidelity to the key decisions of employing modern platoons and companies.

No version of TacOps permits you to choose the side in single-player.

A thought:

You could use the "Change Units and Weapons" function to swap all the equipment, making all of Red's T-80s into M-1s, all of your M-1s into T-80s, etc amen.

AFAIK the Change Units & Weapons feature is present and functional in the demo.
