To buy or not to buy...

Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets is the latest strategy title from the award-winning team at Strategic Studies Group. A synthesis of the very best elements of two critically acclaimed and top-rated game systems, Decisive Battles and Battlefront, and a successor to both, the new Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets brings to life a campaign of epic scale and dynamic battles on the Eastern Front of World War II.

To buy or not to buy...

Post by flibby »

As seems to be a saturated topic, I am in two minds as to whether to purchase this game.

I am happy to report that I just found out that my purchase of BiI from 2005 is still valid (Huzzah!) so hopefully that will get me back in the mood, however after my dissapointment with Battlefront, I think that the only way of convincing me to spend hard (sometimes...) earned money on this latest devolopment, is the prospect of user created scenarios.

If there is the hope that a significant (BiI esque..) group of scenarios can be garnered from this experience, I shall be more than happy to purchase, but if it's going to be a Battlefront style community, then with all due respect, I shall pass.

Further to this, I should be happy to be involved with any User Scenarios, as I have lots of information here at the University I work at (specifically if anyone want to help with a Winter War Suomi Russo conflict!?), but I should not like to be the only one!

Please help [:(]

Well, we're certainly hoping for more of a BII-type community, but I can see that a lot of folks are sitting on the fence so far. Note that the folks who actually have it and are playing it are happy with the game system, the documentation and the tutorials.

I haven't heard anyone comment on the editor yet. It's well documented this time around as far as I can tell and from what I've heard converting BF scenarios over is also a possibility, so I believe there are some good reasons for this release to be successful and to be adopted by SSG fans as the engine to design for going forward.

With that said, if everyone rides the fence, that won't happen and that would be a shame as this is as polished a release as BII or BIN were IMHO - we need some more of you guys to take the plunge, play the game, try out the editor and see what you can do. A community needs do-ers to work as well as observers.

OK, I'm getting ready to take the plunge.  But one piece of info before I plunge.

I see on Matrix's Store page, K:DonD is available as a snail-mailed box set.  This is what I've bought the last two Matrix games which is what I prefer; guess I'm getting more patient in my old age.

Is K:DonD available in a box now?  (disk and printed manual) Or, is the box set not back from the printers and burners?

Seems like I remember a year or so ago a couple of games box set were not released until several weeks after the download version became available. My memory fails me as to what game's those were.
